I dedicate this album to everyone I’ve ever loved.

Thanks for checking out A Memory Finds Its Name! It means a lot. I have a fraught relationship with my voice. It’s partly vocal dysphoria, partly low self-esteem from criticism as a teen. In 2014, my self-doubt resulted in me removing every single track containing my voice from Bandcamp, and replacing it with an instrumental version.

It has taken me almost ten years to finally feel at home with my voice, despite the mismatch with what I wish it sounded like. Getting a new mic this January also helped—I can now produce almost studio-standard work from my bedroom!

Here’s a collection of both brand new songs and songs from as far back as 2011, whose lyrics are finally seeing the light of day. A lot of them explore the twilight between joy and parting, between love and loss. The title is about me breathing new life into old songs, but it is also about rediscovering and putting names to things once lost.

Many thanks to [[artist:chichii|Emmara]] for collabing with me on Summer Heat, and to everyone whose enthusiasm has spurred me to finish this in record time!

   Two, three, four
   Summer heat
   Draw your blade on me
   You know that beat
Won't you say that you'll hold me
   Summer rain
   In the air tonight
   I'll regret it someday
but for now it feels so right

   Summer heat
   Draw your blade on me
   You know that beat
Won't you say that you'll hold me

   In the air tonight
   I'll regret it someday
but for now it feels so right

   Oh, her burning eyes
   Cut me like a knife
   She could kill me, I
   Would thank her for it
   She will never see
   While she's near to me
   I will always be
   Trapped in her orbit

She could break me in two
   She'll remake me anew
If she said, me and you
   Could you take it
Ooh, I would bow in defeat
   Lay myself at her feet
From the day that we meet
   My life is forfeit

Oh, just one dance (Oh, her burning eyes cut me like a knife)
And I know (She could kill me, I would thank her for it)

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I am always chasing the summery bubblegum pop sound, and this track, I feel, is the closest I’ve ever come to hitting the mark.

Despite the cheerful outward appearance, I wanted to capture an undercurrent of hopeless longing and ephemerality—when you know the excitement is bound to end too soon, but you enjoy it anyway, almost in defiance of that knowledge.

The bird you hear midway through is an Asian koel, which I associate strongly with the dusk (when its cries are heard), nostalgia, and now with my home in Singapore.

I’m really happy that I got to get my friend Emmara to sing on this song! She’s an amazing vocalist and musician; you can check out her YouTube channel here.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This song came to me as I was waiting for the bus, the day after someone I barely knew hit on me, even though I had not remotely expressed interest—and then tried it again after I told him no.

The song quickly evolved into a great big vent about the year and a half starting in late 2019, a period that was chock full of romantic encounters that were almost hilariously terrible in hindsight.

There are times when life just feels like playing a game without knowing the rules, and nowhere more than in the realm of romance and dating. I’m just too socially-inept to know how to handle all this confusing nonsense.

I hope the song is enjoyable; it would be the one good thing to come of all of it.

I am a child of rain and fire
Born from the blight, bound by a birthright
Buried in the centuries of dust and daylight

I am the daughter of a woman
Who shone brighter than the sun
She gave me her chain, told me to run
Not one day passes where I don't say her a prayer

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Not to be a total nerd, but this song is about my Dungeons & Dragons character.

Specifically, it is about Ajai, the paladin I play in my main D&D campaign (yes, the one I referenced in [[track:lifes-a-mind-game]]). I couldn’t find any music accurately reflecting her aesthetic for her playlist, so I took matters into my own hands and wrote the song I wished I could find.

Sentimental and protective, Ajai clings to the memory of every person she’s loved long after they have left. Despite the bleakness of the horizons she pursues, she continues to be full of compassion.

The richer vocal style playing off the sharp plucked strings is precisely the sound I associate with Ajai.

Where the robins flew late last summer

Call me too, softly call me back to where you lay
Asleep in dew, dreaming of the answer to

Why the winter's colder every day

I hope you're free, how far westward lies the sea
Tell me, do you dream of me
   Nameless tune forever left behind
Why do I sing, when my world is shattering
   When I've broken everything
Are these tears or am I only blind

Where's that winding war, by the tide beyond the shore
I have tried to try before, but I was so blinded by the sun
You tell me forever now for nevermore
Will I bear what once I bore
Have you thought the glass might hide the gun

I know you're free, have you gone beyond the sea
I still hear you call to me, even though I'll never find you now
But still I sing, for our summer, for our spring
   For my world, for everything
Till I fade, till I've forgotten how

I wrote this song way back in 2011, under the far longer title From a Windchime to its Long-Lost Owner.

It has remained a huge favourite for the decade it has existed, so much that I’ve made five versions of it, one of which you can hear on my 2013 album [[album:compass]].

This is the fifth, and likely final, version: I finally feel like I’ve realised the vision I had all those years ago. The lyrics of this song alone made it worth remaking this many times. At long last, you can hear them!

The lyrics are based on an old short story I wrote at around the same time, about a windchime left behind in a house that has long been abandoned. Even back then, I adored that tone of hopeful melancholy that you see in a lot of my work.

ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Am I infringing on copyright by saying that this song was inspired by Steven Universe?

To be very vague, it’s a story-song about someone who spent most of her centuries-long life trapped against her will, and then in a damning duty she took upon herself to protect her newfound friends.

There’s a sense of...optimism? and desperation? mingled here that culminates in the cries of “free me” and “hear me”.

This was, hands down, one of the hardest songs I’ve ever produced, taking almost a year of fiddling, and then more ahead of this release. Little wonder: it’s the biggest track on this album too, in terms of instruments and length.

   That you haven't known

Don't say you are nothing, I would give the world for you
You may be flawed but you're no mistake
Take a deep breath till there's no sorrow left
And look up above, it's the sky you love

   Can't you see your starlight?

My dear, please be my light
Oh, my dear, it's still the night
Don't think you are any less than wonderful

You're a blessing, you are you (My dear)
You are someone's light (Please be my light)
You're a wish that someone had (Oh, my dear)
Each time they cried (It's still the night)
you're an angel, you're the sky (Don't think you)
you're the joy that you deny (Are any less)
and there's nothing nothing that can change that (Than wonderful)

   Angel, you're my sky
   let them tell their lies
In this world you are the world in someone's eyes
Don't you say it's not deserved
You're the axis of my love
And there's nothing nothing that can change my mind

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I remember, when I first wrote this song in 2012, that it was meant to be a song about “things I wish someone would say to me.”

I struggled a great deal with my mental health back then, with some family tragedies happening around that time, as well as a looming final exam that seemed like life or death.

I used to hate this song in particular, because I was deeply dissastisfied with how the vocals came out. Despite the warm compliments I received on the lyrics and composition, the vocals were a sticking point. Soon after posting it, I removed the vocal version (along with many others) from the internet.

In some strange way, my position is reversed now. I feel more like the person speaking the words of the song than the person it is addressed to, and I adjusted the lyrics to match (and also to match my new lyrical style).

ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I wrote this song for <a href="https://youtu.be/bIyjzum7Hjk">an animation</a> I made for an undergrad stop motion class in 2015, but ultimately (as always) swapped it for a fully instrumental version.

The animation is of a noblewoman and a knight who are in love, surprise surprise. The noble is snatched away by a flying beast and her partner gives chase on a horse, before a fun magic battle happens.

Let’s be real, the “plot” of this one-and-a-half-minute animation actually doesn’t make any sense, but it was always meant to be music-led—visuals echoing the feel of the music.

The lyrics themselves are actually some of my favourites that I’ve written—lines such as “she’s the springtime of my soul” are hopefully as resonant for others as they feel to me personally.

I will be honest: it began as a Steven Universe fan song, but then grew into its own thing as I worked on it.

The only track on this album with no lyrics is this one: the background track of my game, In Between.

It takes place in an ancient, ruined desert town in the realm between Heaven and Hell—despite its great age, it is still populated, by strange creatures that seem neither alive nor dead, and a Queen who has been siphoning the souls of her subjects to prolong her own life.

In the game, I wanted to explore the concept of shifting between various combinations of instruments as you move from one location to another, with the number of instruments building gradually as you approach the end of the game.

I tried to emulate that sense of building in this version of the track, but you can <a href="https://circlejourney.net/in-between/">play the game</a> to get the full experience.

   Walls break, windows crack
Trees die, and don't grow back
If you wait, the leaves will all turn black

   And she also forgot me
At last the whole truth has come to light
It was all just a gambit
A surrender and not a fight
For all these years, she bore my weight
For love, for hate, she tolerated me
"Just wait for me," she'd say to me, "Just wait"

You can't pretend the grief away
Oh, if I could send a reply with the things I'd like to say

ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Back in 2016 or so, I planned on writing a whole stage musical based on my novel, <a href="https://circlejourney.net/writing/eaglesandswans/">Eagles and Swans</a> (which will forever be unreleased, at the rate I’m going). This was the only song that actually materialised in full.

I’m fond of writing songs about fictional characters (moreso than about my own life), especially characters that I created myself. This one’s about Ruthenia, the main character of Eagles and Swans, at a time when she’s questioning everything about her past.

It’s definitely the hardest one to sing on this album, and honestly I feel it was made for the penultimate position. I’m happy to finally have the chance to channel my inner musical theatre lover, and would love to write more for this musical whenever I’ve got the time.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I’ll be honest, I get a little choked up every time I sing this song. It draws deeply on an emotion I’ve grown very familiar with over the past couple of years: of missing someone I used to be around all the time, and of drifting away.

I haven’t been home since February 2020—it’s been more than a year. I can’t help wondering how my home, family and friends have changed since I last saw them. If they’ll even feel like the same people when we next meet.

The shadow of the memory of being close to people I care about—a complex, multivalent thing—continues to loom over most of my waking hours. It is a bittersweet feeling: the relief of being untethered, stirred in with the quiet dread of time passing, of distance growing, when you’re looking away

My fourth album, Between Sky and Sea, is perhaps my most inspired to date. It is half an hour of uplifting synth orchestrals with a handful of contrasting tracks thrown in.

Several of the tracks here are among my favourites ever, including Like Flying, Fuchsia Moonrise, The Journey and Acquiescence.

This album could not have been possible without the Undertale soundtrack, which inspired about 30 minutes of the music here (all composed in a single month).

I've always wanted to write a symphony...so I finally did that. And dang, was this an involved project, although it took much shorter than I was anticipating (six days).

Compositionally, it's where I want it to be; production-wise, I don't see myself spending more time on it. Perhaps I'll polish it someday, but this is what you have for now.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (unused lyrics)
There is a harmony to all that I see
   An unopened window to eternity
Still kept bolted shut by a fear of the dark
A fear for things that have yet to be

There is a map that keeps record of the song
The keys from divinity, untouched so long
They're enfolded deep in the veils of the sea
Now could it be that to free them was wrong?

   For they are our
   Road to heaven, lost forever
Our only chance to catch a fleeing swan
A stream of sorrow, dream unbidden
Just an unremembered feather drifting in the sea

Your love unfolded seven oceans to me
There's three made of glass, three made of melody
And we saved the last for our midnights alone
They were my window, my map and my key

   Love, this is our
   Road to heaven, lost forever
Our only chance to catch a fleeing swan
A stream of sorrow, dream unbidden
Just an unremembered feather drifting in the sea

But I never threw my anchor when I could
   I feared, and inevitably
The keys were lost, engulfed by frost
   Wrenched from my fingers
   Gone, our

   Road to heaven, lost forever
Our only chance to catch a fleeing swan
A stream of sorrow, dream unbidden
Just an unremembered feather drifting further
   Every moment

   Road to heaven, lost together
Our chance is gone, the swan has flown away
A stream that longs to be a river
Just an unremembered feather drifting in the sea

A Homestuck fan release about Prospit and Derse.

I have had these track drafts sitting on my hard drive as MIDIs since 2017, and I'm pleased that they are finally seeing the light of day. They were originally made for a concept album about celestial bodies in Homestuck, but all the other tracks got released elsewhere, so I'll be releasing the last few in parts.

yrics: |-
   Oh must this be?
   Is this the end?
After this day will we really leave these things behind

   Don't you cry
   Look at the sky, oh
Can't you see it smiling down at you?

No, I thought we would be forever
Why must we end this way?

But dearest child you can't look back
You've lived your whole life for this day

   Sometimes it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
But till you've learned to let you go
You'll never know how to fly

Child, you must know this nest is
Only a place to rest and learn
   Learn to be strong
   Someday when you have flown
   This I have always known
I'll pray you find a place you belong

   Yes it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
   But wherever you go
we're under the same blue sky
You must go, you must leave this nest
Take flight, see the very best
Of life, seek out that echoing song

Am I ready, am I too weak?
Will I find this song I seek?
Somehow I fear to lose my way
How can I let the wind whisk me away?
(How can I let the wind whisk you away?)

   Trust yourself

   You've taught me well

   Take the sky
   Trust your compass

   Yes, it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
But till you learn to let go
You'll never know how to fly
Birds don't forget how to sing
No matter how far they might stray
Don't you know there are some things
   That time can't take away

   I'll learn to let go
These memories don't have to die
'Cause wherever I go ('Cause wherever you go)
We're under the same blue sky
You have taught me to sing
And someday I'll find you that song
   This is farewell, I suppose
But who said this is the end? So long

Fly Away is a track I made for my secondary school graduation ceremony. That was back in 2010... I've remade this track maybe 2 or 3 times, because I always liked it, but I never felt like my skills quite matched up to the vision I had for it... It's meant to be a duet between a student and a teacher, that was the original intent of it... As a graduation song, it's kind of bittersweet, and, uh, I had some friends tell me they cried when they heard it. I guess it was just, like, the context and everything.

How many days did I spend thinking
'Bout how you did me wrong, wrong, wrong?
Lived in the shade you were throwing
'Til all of my sunshine was gone, gone, gone
And I couldn't get away from ya
In my feelings more than Drake, so yeah
Your name on my lips, tongue-tied
Free rent, living in my mind

But then something happened one magical night

   I forgot that you existed
And I thought that it would kill me, but it didn't
   And it was so nice
   So peaceful and quiet
   I forgot that you existed
It isn't love, it isn't hate, it's just indifference
   I forgot that you

   Got out some popcorn
As soon as my rep started going down, down, down
   Laughed on the school yard
As soon as I tripped up and hit the ground, ground, ground
And I would've stuck around for ya
Would've fought the whole town, so yeah
Would've been right there, front row
Even if nobody came to your show

There was a cat that really was gone
   Ra-Ra-Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Tsar
But the kazachok, he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state, he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the Queen, he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done

No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms
Then one night, some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us", they kept demanding
   And he really came

Ra-Ra-Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen
They put some poison into his wine
   Ra-Ra-Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine

   I've forgotten her face

What is she to me, anyway?
Why should I care that I don't recall?

Well, all my pride was misplaced
How could I have been so blind
What use is a memorial in your mind?

   Cups break, windows crack
Trees die, and don't grow back
   If you wait
The leaves will all turn black

   And she, too, forgot me
At last the whole truth has come to light
It was all just a gambit
A surrender and not a fight

And for all those years, she bore my weight, for love, for hate, she tolerated
Me, abandoned me, a worthless scrap to her, until she died that night
   That endless night

   Cups break, windows crack
trees die, and don't grow back
If you wait, the leaves will all turn black

   Don't you know,
   overgrown houses fall
all they've known, no trace at all
a bird sends up her morning call
   alone

I've always known how to make things
but not how to break them,
I don't know how to take it
   when they can't be repaired
   I've always known! She's gone,
   she's gone, she's gone, she's gone...
   She never cared

Who am I, who was I
to you, my mother? Answer me!

   Cups break, windows crack
trees die, and don't grow back
   suddenly, everything goes black

   Songs end, seeds decay
You can't pretend the grief away
Oh, if I could send a reply with the things I'd like to say
I'd say I'm sorry, that I wasted my childhood away

   But you're not there
   And you can't watch me

So this is a bit different. About half a year ago, I was made aware of the existence of concept albums. The idea seemed incredibly cool, so I figured I would try making one for my next album...or, well, EP.

It was an organic process, fuelled by the act of living in itself (which is more inspiring than I gave it credit for). There are some songs that could have been on this album but aren't.

The bonus version of the album gets you instrumental versions of the songs as well as the originals. Enjoy!

Life goes on, days fleet by
Yeah, they’re gone, with no goodbye
With every run that I survive
I turn to the sun to know I’m alive

Frame up every loss, a memento of how I fought
Yesterday's a day I can cross off of the page

So when I go out tomorrow, just for the day
I'm gonna drown my sorrow, dance it away
And if you decide to follow, tell me you'll stay
Even if our sky begin to grey

And everything turns forever, moves to the rhythm
Of the heart, love is our axis and axiom
Everything's now or never, this is our anthem
Yeah you know, we'll love and love again

The sparkle of the blue untouched by me and you
We'll sail the skies and say we left all our battles behind
Now the tears of yesterday a thousand miles away
We'll sail the skies all day
Never knowing which nameless sea we'll find

   Years ago
(Gotta go, gotta be at the start line
Gotta know, want the sea and the sunshine)
   I was lost
(Make it so, sailing off at the shoreline
Let it go when I know what is mine, oh)
   Did I know
(Gotta go, gotta be at the start line
Gotta know, want the sea and the sunshine)
   How much it cost
(Make it so, sailing off at the shoreline
Let it go when I know what is mine, oh)
   I shrug off the chains
(Gotta go, gotta be at the start line
Gotta know, want the sea and the sunshine)
   That guarded my heart
(Make it so, sailing off at the shoreline
Let it go when I know what is mine, oh)
   A new age begins
(Gotta go, gotta be at the start line
Gotta know, want the sea and the sunshine)
   It's time to restart
(Make it so, sailing off at the shoreline
Let it go when I know)

So when I go out tomorrow, just for the day
I'm gonna drown my sorrow, dance it away
And if you decide to follow, tell me you'll stay
Even if our sky begin to grey

So won't you come out and join me, dance to the thunder
Let the rain fall like we fell for each other
I know it's temporary, but till it's over
Promise that we'll go it hand in hand

The sparkle of the blue untouched by me and you
We'll sail the skies and say we left all our battles behind
Now the tears of yesterday a thousand miles away
We'll sail the skies all day
Never knowing which nameless sea we'll find

Every sea and sky and every song and sigh
I write the names that I still recall tonight

Wade in the waves when the tide is low
You hear them lapping at your door
Here, it's deceptively clear but you don't know
   Just what you're lookin' for

There's always more than what meets the eye
So dive in deep beyond the shore
And, let the sand keep you high and dry
But watch out as breakers roar, yeah

Things always lie closer than they appear
There's grand secrets lost on ocean floors
Beware every ripple, as they draw near
The riptides of my shallow shores

I stay low, though I'm sure we could go
I'll wait for her call to know, mustn't pull her under
No, always submerged in her glow
She holds back, she's afraid of flying
I change tack, guess it's worth trying
Lightning crack, am I still denying
   My hull breakin' on her

Hundreds of things you don't see
Constellate as the history of me

There's always more than what meets the eye

I used to watch for passing ships
As if I might see the same one twice
And I waited with breath bated on my lips
As if someday I might hear his voice

All the seeking and the drawn out sighs
Couldn't prepare me for that night
When he said move on, he'd been ready to fly
And like a star in the sky he was gone

Someday maybe I'll tell you my story
There's a whole library of regret for the things I'll never do
Oh, I've tried to close that book of rue
But if you're down to try, I'd reopen those pages with you

There's a corner in my heart for plans we didn't start
The time we spent apart didn't fade his words away
And ever since that day, I've let his shadow stay
A haunting in the places I don't look at anymore
But when the sunset pours in I can't keep my eyes open
It's like outside me, everything has moved forward
   While I'm rereading foreword, hopin'

   Whoa-o-o-oh
Someday maybe I'll tell you my story
There's a whole library of regret for the things I'll never do
Oh, I've tried to close that book of rue
But if you're down to try, I'd reopen those pages, yeah
Someday maybe I'll let myself weigh heavy
There's an inventory of the things from my past that stay with me
Even if you don't know what to do, if you're still not afraid
There's a world I would trade in for you

Telling the truth is half the fight
Bring every secret to the light
Unfinished manuscripts with half written promises
   Every surrender and strife
Every love lost in my life
Fight my fear, lay it out
Where would I be without you

Tell me how to begin 'cause

Someday baby I'll tell you my story
There's a whole library of regret for the things I'll never do
Oh, I've tried to close that book of rue
But if you're down to try, I'd reopen those pages with you

   Oh must this be?
   Is this the end?
After this day will we really leave these things behind

   Don't you cry
   Look at the sky, oh
Can't you see it smiling down at you?

No, I thought we would be forever
Why must we end this way?

But dearest child you can't look back
You've lived your whole life for this day

   Sometimes it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
But till you've learned to let you go
You'll never know how to fly

Child, you must know this nest is
Only a place to rest and learn
   Learn to be strong
   Someday when you have flown
   This I have always known
I'll pray you find a place you belong

   Yes it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
   But wherever you go
we're under the same blue sky
You must go, you must leave this nest
Take flight, see the very best
Of life, seek out that echoing song

Am I ready, am I too weak?
Will I find this song I seek?
Somehow I fear to lose my way
How can I let the wind whisk me away?
(How can I let the wind whisk you away?)

   Trust yourself

   You've taught me well

   Take the sky
   Trust your compass

   Yes, it's painful I know
   Watching these memories die
But till you learn to let go
You'll never know how to fly
Birds don't forget how to sing
No matter how far they might stray
Don't you know there are some things
   That time can't take away

   I'll learn to let go
These memories don't have to die
'Cause wherever I go ('Cause wherever you go)
We're under the same blue sky
You have taught me to sing
And someday I'll find you that song
   This is farewell, I suppose
But who said this is the end? So long

An album one year in the making.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
   TO THE PERSON READING THIS,

Thank you for listening to Time and Tide! (If you’ve somehow come upon this booklet by itself, here’s a link to the album.)

Here’s what I was up to when I wasn’t responding to your Discord messages or toiling away at my freelance work.

I’ve been putting out yearly music compilations for several years now, and this album is my slightly-late 2017 comp. You can expect a plethora of styles: synthpop, orchestral, jazz, and combinations of the above.

I’m glad I’ve been able to put this together, even with my life taking new turns, and new obligations emerging constantly. Music is a comforting spot of familiarity amid all the change.

To everyone who helped and supported me throughout the production of this album, whether by helping me or simply by encouraging me—[[artist:serialsymphony|Skip]], [[artist:veritas-unae|Veri]], Asprg, Kim, Yanperng, Yvonne, Alfonse, Hej, Waff, OP, Njike, the rest of the Root Crew, Split, [[artist:psithurist|Jo]], [[artist:tempest2k|Roxe]], Poize, [[artist:austinado|Austin]], Poe, my parents, and everyone else who was there for me in some way—my biggest thank you!

   Circlejourney

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Generally speaking, all the bonus tracks were originally intended to be featured on the main album. But things change, and sometimes you make enough decent tracks to displace this many to the bonus section. Think of it as a side B or a collection of album rejects.

ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I have always believed that [[track:frost-and-clockwork|Frost and Clockwork]], an earlier track of mine, was a good concept wasted on sub-par production. For that reason, I’ve made numerous variations on that concept ever since. Timekeeper, with its tongue-in-cheek former title Ice Horologue, is perhaps the most fully-realised variation

It features the “[[track:never-gonna-give-you-up|Never Gonna Give You Up]] progression” that I’ve become mildly infamous for overusing. That progression represents a very particular mood to me, shaped by Vanessa Carlton’s <a href="https://youtu.be/Cwkej79U3ek">A Thousand Miles</a> rather than Rick Astley’s classic. (Prepare to find out over the course of this booklet just how big of a fan I am of mainstream pop.)

The character in the illustration to the left is the first of a few track gijinka that I’ve designed for this album. They’re some sort of deity whom I refer to as the Timekeeper, a being in charge of keeping the inner mechanisms of time well-oiled and running.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
I had a lot of fun making Zeitgeist, possibly more than I did on any other track on this album. The bassline is inspired by (and indeed the creation of the whole track was precipitated by) the chorus of Boney M’s Rasputin. There you go, now you’ll never be able to unhear it.

To me, the track evokes the feel of a decade past, although I can’t pinpoint which one that is. It has that funky bass, a twenty-piece string ensemble, an erhu, white noise effects, bitcrushing, goodness knows what’s going on in here.

As a play on both track and title (“zeitgeist” literally translates to “time ghost”), the art features a clock and a hoverboard surfer straight out of Back To The Future. Probably a second-rate professional time-traveller.

Nighttime cityscapes are a favourite subject of mine, and here I thought it would really fit the feel of the track: metropolitan, up-tempo, and retrofuturistic.

I wear my Celtic Woman influence on my sleeve. The solo violin on harp/string ensemble gradually joined by drums, the frequent borrowing from Dorian mode...yeah, that’s Celtic Woman-style, alright.

To understand what the track is really about, you have to read Austinado and Sparaze’s comic, Vast Error. It’s good, I highly recommend it. In summary, this track is about the players of the game looking on at their universe-changing destiny, which has existed eons longer than they have, and wondering how they will contend with it.

Who’s that in the art, then? To avoid unintentional copyright infringement, I decided to make it a drawing of me.

rack: The Palace Greenhouse
uration: '03:05'
RLs:
 https://circlejourney.bandcamp.com/track/the-palace-greenhouse
ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This track is a bit of an outlier: it’s almost purely a string ensemble piece with concessions to a bass drum and a snare, making it more exception than norm on this album composed largely of synth orchestrals.

A tie-in to my novel <a href="https://circlejourney.net/writing/eaglesandswans/">Eagles and Swans</a> (which most listeners haven’t read, I wager), it’s a track about a garden within the greenhouse of the palace complex, where one of the main characters likes to read on weekends. It’s stately, calm, and gives way to an interlude with a solo violin melody that, in my opinion, is the highlight of the track.

All in all, this is probably the closest thing to a filler track on this album, just something connecting two parts of the album together. The next track is more interesting, I guarantee you.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This one’s got a bit of a story to it. I initially meant for Sidecar Swing to be a short, simple experiment with a 20s jazz-style piece, the sort you might hear playing at a party or in a saloon.

The instant I had that imagery in my head, I started to picture mini-stories to accompany it, surrounding a speakeasy where people go to live the lives they may not live anywhere else.

Pictured in the track illustration is a pair of characters from one of the ideas I had while pondering the setting: a couple of flappers who regularly meet at the speakeasy, romancing each other and parting only when the sun comes up.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Speaking of Celtic-inspired new age music…

Chariot is about the sun. The title references the god Helios, and the track itself is a riff on the structure and style of <a href="https://youtu.be/HHNZuj6U8jo">Reel Around the Sun</a>, one of my favourite works of music, with a spacey touch introduced by the glitching.

The art was initially created not for Chariot, but for a different track that was meant to be on this album, but which I am unable to release. I think the subject matters are similar enough that the image still fits. (I like making music about space, surprise surprise.)

For those to whom this makes sense: Chariot is technically in the D-sharp Aeolian dominant scale, but I like to think of it as being in D-sharp minor with the tonic triad always being borrowed from D-sharp major.

rack: Evening Song
uration: '03:45'
RLs:
 https://circlejourney.bandcamp.com/track/evening-song
ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
Evening Song is the only track on this album composed for the art rather than the other way around.

Inspired by the intro of <a href="https://youtu.be/QnAXqEw6dUA">Tender</a> by Yvette Young, it was an experiment in a style that had so far eluded me, with a solo melody on top of guitar broken chords, completely devoid of drums.

Ultimately, I still gave in to the temptation of sticking drums into the track, towards the end.

The guitarist in the art is the imaginary guitarist of the track. If I’d had the idea sooner, I would have added some aural indication that the piece is being played at the seaside, as shown in the image.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This was me noodling with the synths in FL Studio, trying to make something as sweet and bubblegummy as the shade of pink in the illustration.

I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t inspired by Carly Rae Jepsen if I tried. The title itself is based on a lyric from her song <a href="https://youtu.be/s5OG4uYx4Z4">Picture</a>. I can’t say what specific genre it’s reminiscent of, but it was a sincere attempt to make something that would sound vaguely at home on a J-pop playlist.

There’s a bit going on here synth-wise: it was the first time I’d tried making a more complex strum pattern, which you can hear in the last third of the track. There’s also a generous helping of sound effects: bicycle bells, the crows synth (one of my favourites), and the water drop effect for example.

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This track was part of a music compilation for INHOSPITABLE, a comic by my friend Roxe. It’s a image-rich, dialogue-light story, and you’ll come to notice the eerie greyscale static and the silence that characterise a great part of the webcomic.

Something about TV static inspires in me a sense of intrigue, about what’s hiding behind it, what message, garbled by interference from space, is struggling to take form and make itself seen. Emptiness is about all that, the lost information, the void, the spaces and silence.

The character? Once again a representation of the music, gazing down upon a black hole as it guzzles light and information.

The World as We Know It was initially made for an earlier project, but when that fell through, I repurposed it for this one.

This track is a wistful contemplation of the earth—temporary, fragile, full of vivid sensory experiences, but ultimately lonely.

Would intelligent life from elsewhere know the beauty of the sunset? Would they even be able to perceive it, or fathom beauty at all? The notion must be confronted, then, that we may be the only beings who will ever experience what we call beauty.

Another track from the same abandoned project that [[track:the-world-as-we-know-it|The World as We Know It]] was meant to be released on, Frosted Glass quotes two of my old tracks: Frost and Clockwork (again) and Hyalomancy. The title is a combination of the titles of both. I always thought the two were oddly compatible, and this piece bears that out.

Just like the previous track, Frosted Glass is nostalgic in both style and content, sort of an account of gazing through broken windows into a blurry past with a distinct sense of loss for what one left behind there.

It’s inspired, as a lot of my work is, by the works of Joe Hisaishi, legendary composer of the soundtracks of such films as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. His work formed the soundtrack of much of my childhood and was one of several things that inspired my love for the major pentatonic scale.

It was incredibly satisfying to draw and adjust blending modes on the glass shards in the image, which form a half-mask over the face.

Here is the obligatory sea-themed track on this album!

Moving on is a common theme in songs, and I thought this made Shipwreck particularly fitting as a closer.

This was written about confronting the departure of someone who used to be an anchoring force in your life. I did have two particular people in mind when I wrote the lyrics, but the specifics of that don’t quite matter.

The vocals, being mine, are far from what I’d like them to be (and in all honesty it’s still difficult for me to share my singing voice), but I hope you like it nevertheless!

Originally the album’s opener, I ultimately set it aside as I made new tracks that were similar in style but exceeded it in quality. Several people have mentioned that it sounds like something from Undertale; personally I just see it as yet another variation on the [[track:frost-and-clockwork-worlds-await|Frost and Clockwork]] theme (F&C was also referred to by many as being reminiscent of the [[album:undertale-soundtrack|Undertale soundtrack]], so that’s no surprise).

A rearrangement of an old piece of music under the same title, found on my album [[album:coastal-dreaming]]. I was always fond of the melody and instrumentation on that piece and it was the first thing I tried remaking after upgrading my instruments. The track sounds a lot closer to what I envisioned now, though I miss the in-your-face timbre of the original instruments.

rack: Dirty Dirge

uration: '2:46'
ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
This one was made for no rhyme or reason; the melody came to me, and I liked it and built the rest of the track around it. Brash and very hard-rock, I didn’t feel like I could do it justice until I got my hands on some better instruments. It was almost a year before I took it the draft and finished it up. Later on, I decided to make it a song played by a band formed of a few of my characters.

rack: Wineglasses
as Cover Art: false
uration: '1:32'
ommentary: |-
   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (booklet commentary)
A soft lounge jazz piece that’s just missing the sound of clinking glasses over it. Its original title was Wineglasses on Red Stone, conjuring a very specific image (or at least intended to) of a table made of blood-red stone. I made the whole thing on a whim and it materialised in barely an hour; I’m not letting it on the main album by virtue of how little effort it took.

☁️🌊 the sky and the sea try for centuries to reach each other.

This is a character song for Marin and Cielo, the leads of my webcomic <a href="compass.circlejourney.net">Compass</a>. Many thanks to Céleste for lending her vocal talents to the song and taking on Marin's part so wonderfully 💙 Check out her music and other works at: https://pinkie.horse

   <i>Circlejourney:</i> (Tumblr commentary)
I'm proud to share Wherever You Were, a song about Marin and Cielo from my webcomic <a href="compass.circlejourney.net">Compass</a>! The sea and the sky, gazing at each other since the start of time, yet unable to reach each other.

My friend @irlpinkiepie sang Marin's part, I couldn't be happier that we got to collaborate. Check out her music and other works <a href="https://pinkie.horse">here</a>!

OK so. I typed up a big ramble about the process of making this song, which was more complicated than almost anything else I’ve ever done - gonna tack it on here, in case that interests anyone…

   <b>THE SONGWRITING BIT</b>

I didn’t know what this song would become when I started it. It was just a piano doodle that eventually became the 8-bar refrain in the intro. Almost off the bat, though, I began to feel like it was showing my Vienna Teng + 2010s Broadway influence - you can really hear the <a href="https://youtu.be/BBbVUPf6NOw">Stray Italian Greyhound</a> and <a href="https://youtu.be/ss7aFUbwzec">Harbor</a> in it, with a side of…something else, maybe <a href="https://youtu.be/Cwkej79U3ek">A Thousand Miles</a>?

It became apparent that the instrumental was missing a melody, so I also started to draft one by humming (it’s how I do it on most of my music now). The first line <i>“All my life / I’ve sought a safer seashore”</i> emerged pretty quickly.

With the melody + rhythm that was forming, I wanted an AABBA rhyme scheme starting with this line - like a limerick, but with the last few lines way more clipped. <i>“And felt like I wanted something more / Than to watch the days go by / What am I / Waiting here for?”</i> These got written quite effortlessly as well.

I really liked the play on expectations with <i>“What am I… / waiting here for?”</i> earlier, so I echoed that structure in the second half, with <i>“Going where… / ever you were.”</i>

   * Second half of the chorus is my favourite part of this whole song btw. One of my favourite set of rhymes that I’ve ever written.

Up till this point, I wasn’t sure what the song was about, other than dreaming of travelling on the ocean. I actually thought it would turn into an Offshore song at first. But as it went, the second half of the chorus mentioned the POV character sailing in search of something, and I went…that doesn’t make sense, why are they waiting on the shore in the first half, and then sailing in the second half. What if it were two characters…wait that’s just <i>Compass</i>?

Once I knew it was about Marin and Cielo, I distinguished the voices: Cielo’s part would have the “soaring” notes and Marin’s would be an octave below. I also threw in the melodic quote from [[track:coastal-dreaming]] (which is very near and dear to me). After the chorus I pulled my favourite key change (tonic major to submediant major) and then, moved into the verse.

I have to confess: the first 2.5 lines actually wholesale quote a less-known Homestuck fan track I made, appropriately titled [[track:on-an-island-far-away]]. Doubly appropriate because the Compass comic has a few Homestuck references, too.

At this point, most of my lyrical and musical choices were trying to convey a sentiment of, to quote the venerable Ms Jepsen, “before you came into my life, I missed you so bad.” I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of longing for, or missing, something you have never known, or a sense of déjà vu, which Compass is also very much about. Quoting my older music that I haven’t listened to in a while was a personal indulgence of that feeling.

Following on that, I did a mirrory thing again with this verse’s lyrics:

   * <i>“What is forecast”</i> <=> <i>“What’s this memory”</i>
   * <i>“What is glowing out at sea”</i> <=> <i>“What is gazing from the shore”</i>
   * <i>“Voice from the past / My future bliss”</i> <=> <i>“Voice from a dream / A truth I miss”</i>
   * Combining the rhymes of these two halves with <i>“For me”</i> (“for” rhymes with “shore”, “me” rhymes with “sea”)
   * I was going for the visual of Marin and Cielo looking longingly out at the shore / the sea, but not quite sure what they’re longing for?

This verse actually also gestures to the Coastal Dreaming lyrics I had in my head for years, though I never wrote them down: <i>“for I am sailing between our worlds / you are the light waiting on the shore for me / you are the sky spreading out its endless wings / and I’m the sea // for I am sailing, alone on the tide / you are the bells of the port, ringing for me / you are my journey, and every story / is a dream I dream”</i>

I wrote the bridge with the AABBA rhyme scheme, and the line “I will bend… …time to find you” to once again echo that structure I mentioned farther up. All of this lyric stuff happened almost effortlessly, I didn’t have to think too hard about the rhymes, they were just always right there. Which never happens. Wild.

   <b>THE PERFORMANCE/PRODUCTION BIT</b>

I sang both parts in the demo, but I found that I couldn’t reliably hit the B2 in Marin’s part. I didn’t like the way it sounded with my voice, so I began to consider collaborators. I thought of @ irlpinkiepie first because she’s read <i>Compass</i> and also has known my music for a long time. I had heard her singing once (incidentally the song in question was appropriate to making the connection too) - anyway if you’re reading this post rn, thank you so so much for agreeing to collab. You absolutely killed it and I was so pleased hearing those harmonies for the first time.

Something about having different vocalists for different characters <i>really</i> cements it as a character song, and for that reason I was happy I got to do Cielo’s part (he’s one of my all time OC faves), and as an actual duet instead of harmonising with myself as usual.

Pinkie’s part was recorded with a webcam mic, which meant certain frequencies had to be “unearthed” from the audio while others (e.g. certain resonant frequencies) had to be punched out (literally, I used very narrow EQ bands to poke out certain frequencies).
   <img src="media/misc/frequency1.PNG" width="299" length="96">
   <img src="media/misc/frequency2.PNG" width="299" length="96">

(Yeah, two instances of Parametric EQ, because there were just not enough knobs for everything I wanted to do)

I’m actually really really happy with how much I was able to match it up with my recording, despite taking it in a dead-end direction for half a day (and having to start over from an older version of the project). The effect stack is #MusicCrimes though:
   <img src="media/misc/musiccrimes.JPG" width="294" length="295">

Having the vocal parts slightly stereo panned also made way for me to make a visualiser video with Marin and Cielo on the correct side of the screen. So, this does bring up the small issue that I’m losing hearing in my right ear, meaning I was constantly flipping the left/right channels as I worked on it, and till now I still second guess whether the audio is properly balanced…another quirk of the production making its way into the song’s final form, I guess.

In the course of putting the track together, I also made an a capella version for fun. It’s not as refined (I tuned down the instrumental to match the slightly off-key singing lol), but I was going for the rough choral feel, so it probably works. But it’s a bit weird playing the OG song and this version one after another, because of the slight detune.

Aaaand that’s become a 1000 word essay. Circlejourney OUT

Music is amazingly compact. It is strange how twelve hours of work could go into a four minute track. It's as if one could hide an entire world within each.

And that's what I feel music is. Hearing a new piece of music is like discovering a new world, feeling its wind and basking in its honey sun.

This album features no shortage of works inspired by fiction: tributes, rearrangements, commissions and tie-ins for my projects. But more importantly, each track here is a place captured in sound, and I hope you can discover it as you listen.
