+
+ Winds of Change has an interesting history. Back when I joined the DMT, I wrote a song called [[track:cooldown-desynced|"Cooldown"]] that was intended to be Dad Bedford's Strife theme. Initially I had intended it to be a strife theme for both Dad and Kate sort of how [[track:aggrieve|"Aggrieve"]] from the Homestuck OST was a strife theme for both Rose and Her Mom. However, as I read the comic further, I understood that Dad probably would never raise a hand toward toward his daughter (but dear-person is different story). With this in mind, I decided to set out and make a strife theme specifically for Kate. I had intended this song to be on [[album:desynced-vol-2|Volume 2]] but we needed to round out the track list for Volume 1 and my song fit the general tone of the album. As for the song itself, I decided to go for a more 8-bit direction that was reminiscent of the early Homestuck strife themes like [[track:showtime-original-mix|Showtime]] and Aggrieve. I incorporated elements of Kate's theme, [[track:daughter-desynced|"Daughter"]] as well as the previously mentioned "Cooldown" I'm fairly proud of how this track turned out, especially with the Cooldown section towards the middle.

+ Cooldown is a bit special to me since it was the first track I wrote when I joined the desynced team back in November 2019. [[artist:dizzims|Dizzy]] needed a strife theme for Dad Bedford since the person who was initially going to make it left the project before I joined and I was more than happy to fill in. Seeing as this was going to be the first strife theme for Desynced, I took major inspiration from the track [[track:showtime-original-mix|"Showtime"]] by Malcolm Brown as that was the first strife theme in Homestuck. I wanted to created a melody that was as catchy, memorable and remixable as Showtime's main melody. Despite it being my first song for Desynced, it still one of my favorites compositions.

+ I initially wrote this track for [[album:homestuck-vol-2|Volume 2]] as theme for Evan's Land. At time of writing, the land has yet to be revealed so I am somewhat limited in what I can say right now. Given that I was writing a land theme, I took major inspiration from some of the Homestuck land themes (I.E [[track:doctor|Doctor]], [[track:candles-and-clockwork|CaC]], [[track:endless-climb|Endless Climb]]).In terms of the song itself, I decided to mess around with counterplay between melodic lines. This experimentation led to some interesting results melody and motif wise. I played around with that style a whole lot more in [[track:heartbreaker|Evan's strife theme]] but that a discussion best saved for Volume 2's commentary...

I thought the melody sounded pretty cool so I submitted it to the music team to see if it would fit on vol.2. I decided to make it a theme of the main group of kids and their friendship. There's not really a whole lot going on in this song, but I do think the main melody is pretty cool. Friendship truly is magic

When I first transcribed it I thought it would make a good strife theme but I submitted it to the music team, [[artist:dizzims|Dizzy]] thought it might make a good song for Evan's Land theme instead. As a result of this suggestion I decided to make Mirror Mirror. However, I thought it might be cool to see if I could make the motif into it a strife theme. Hence the heartbreaker was born. I heavily altered the original arrangement I used for Mirror Mirror to make it sound more energetic and dynamic. I took a lot of influence from the track ["Into the Mind"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0EQ9goWZ0s) by Toby Fox as well as some touhou boss themes . While I'm not as happy with the instrumentation, I think the overall composition is pretty good and I like how I remixed Mirror Mirror.

The idea was to write a intense rock/metal track with Japanese instruments in the vain of [[Atomic Bonsai]] and [Fuuga](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUKstGOfcVA) from Guilty Gear. I named it Tsukuyomi as a short of cheeky call back to "Moon" naming convention PB used with his track [[track:lunar-dance|"Lunar Dance."]] In hindsight maybe the naming scheme wasn't a great idea considering what role the moon plays in the comic. No I will not elaborate on what I mean by this.

She and Joseph said wanted something in a similar vain to [[track:arcjecs-theme|"Arcjec's theme"]] from the Vast Error Album, [[album:catch-322|Catch 322]]. Since that's like one of my favorite tracks from the Vast Error soundtrack, I was very much chomping at the bit to do Josh's theme. In terms of actual inspiration, I took influence from Walkaround style music found on albums like [[album:alterniabound|Alterniabound]] and the aforementioned catch 322. I also took notable influence from [[track:red-sucker|"Red Sucker"]] and the works of Carpenter Brute to create this really intense electronic rock song. Also before y'all ask, the title is a reference to a tik-tok that Joseph likes.

+ So this is a song I've wanted to do for a long time. Early in the development of [[album:desynced-vol-1|Desynced Vol.1]], I attempted to write a theme for Yellow. Seeing as the comic was still in it's relative infancy it was a pretty big swing and miss on my part in terms of writing a song that fit them as a character. I decided to scrap it but I very much wanted to try again down the line when we knew more. Flash forward to when i got a chance to write some music for Yellow in the form [[track:asimov-3|"ASIMOV 3つの法律 (Lofi Beats To Engineer Alone To)"]] that I would get my chance. In terms of the song itself, [[artist:dizzims|dizzy]] wanted to me to take some influence from the track [[track:hip-shop|"Cool Shop"]] from the Deltarune soundtrack and write a chill song. I definitely tried my best but I do think I went a little hard towards the middle which might negate the chill vibe. I took a lot of the original melody elements from the lo-fi track I wrote for yellow and spiced it up with some swing. While I'm not the happiest in terms how the instrumentation came together, I'm glad it came together.

[[artist:dizzims|Dizzy]] asked me to make the song for the a flash that would become [S]Evan: Exit very early on into Vol.2 Development. So I tried to make a track that was a multi faceted as something like [[Umbral Ultimatum]]. However, I felt like the track was a bit of a mess in terms of actual composition. it felt like it didn't really come together like I wanted and I was pretty bummed about it. However, when it got used in the flash, I turned my opinion around on it slightly. While it might not be my favorite song I did for vol.2, I do appreciate the experience it gave me.

Initially for the flash, the team was going to use the track [[track:mother-dearest|"Mother Dearest"]] as the theme for the Good Dear. I personally felt that it was a bit weird to use that song for some normal deer people, so I decided to make a quick remix that was more folksy and down to earth. In the desynced, the Scholars are far more realized as a concept than the Denizens, so they've had my attention for a while. For the song, I want to compose a piece that you would hear you were being told the lore about Skaia and her Scholars. [The latest update](https://mspfa.com/?s=28296&p=769) at time of writing (1/10/2021) would be a good example of a place you would here it. It took pretty major influence from the song [[track:lotus|"Lotus"]] by [[artist:seth-peelle|Beatfox]] both in terms of composition and instrumentation. The song also serves as a preview of something to come but I'll talk more about that when the time comes.

+ So back when I wrote [[track:do-you-dream-of-electric-sheep|"Do You Dream of Electric Sheep?"]] I had this idea for a track that was a combined all of the motifs for the Derse Dreamers in Desynced (I.E Evan, Josh, [Redacted]). Seeing as this was essentially our Prospit and Derse album, I figured it might fit nicely on Election Season. If it wasn't already obvious, this track is meant to be the Desynced equivalent of Solatrus's track [[track:derse-dreamers|"Derse Dreamers."]] The song follows as fairly similar compositional style, where I have an original melody serving as a base and then throwing in leitmotifs like nuts. Something that is unique to this track is how the song changes feels. The song goes between a more typical swing feel to some thing that more akin to a break beat. This was inspired by a song that we played for Jazz ensemble that went between latin and swing feels. Honestly this might be my second favorite track compositionally after [[Antigone]] and I'm happy with how this turned out.

The idea behind the track was simple enough, make a theme for Dusken that remixed [[Void of the Moon]]. Initially, I figured I would try and write a track that could fit the kinda jazzy feel we had already established for the derse side of the album. However, after a brief stint where I was listening to Apex Twin, I decided to try my hand at something in the vain IDM. What resulted was probably my best attempt at my breakbeat centric style to date. The whispers at the start and end where based on the concept of Dusken having clouds that whispers to people so I figured it might be appropriate to have em. Also yeah the woman laughing through out is supposed to be the narrator, who is pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Frankly, I don't know why people like this song as much as they do but hey I ain't complaining lol

+ If I remember correctly, this was the very first song that I finished for the album. I pretty much knew what I wanted this track to be from the beginning: A rockin chiptune infused banger in the vein of Anamanaguchi’s work on the Scott Pilgrim vs The World Soundtrack. However, as I started developing the track beyond the demo phase, I wanted to incorporate influences from tracks like [“Just”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIFLtNYI3Ls) by Radiohead and the [“I’m In Your Mind Fuzz”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE_muDsndyU) Suite by King Gizz. The final product is something I feel works as an intro to the album as a whole. It’s a familiar sound for those who’ve listened to Tensei’s [[album:strife|“Strife”]] [[album:strife-2|albums]] but also serves as jumping off point for the album to start doing its own thing.

If it wasn’t already apparent, this song takes heavy influence from Yoko Shimamura’s work on the Street Fighter 2 soundtrack. I wanted a song that felt intense but heavy like many of the tracks from SF2 and Taz’s songs more generally. Specifically, I took influences from [Ryu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO7JEqIPQv0) and [[track:guiles-theme|Guile’s themes]] as well as [[track:tazs-theme|Taz’s Theme]] for Catch 322. I like how the main melody develops over the whole song with more and more added layers of harmony. Really helps convey a somewhat triumphant feel, like it’s as if Taz is overcoming her adversity and coming out the other side stronger.

+ So, this song has an interesting history. I initially wrote [[track:on-the-hunt-for-something-dangerous-beta|the beta version]] of this track for Vol.6 before I started development on Fighting Further. I wanted to write a Go Ichinose style Pokémon battle theme for Laivan since I was told that a song like that would fit him best. In the process of writing it, it gave me the idea to try and write battle themes for the rest of the main cast. This idea would eventually crystalize into the idea for my solo. Once the solo had started development, I found myself wanting to rearrange the original track to fit the album’s feel a bit better. Most of the beta version’s elements are here but altered and interpolated in a more intense way. I took a lot of influence from “PWT Final Round” and Go Ichinose’s arrangement of “Battle! Champion Cynthia” for this track and I think it shows. This song is a personal composition highlight with all of its dynamic changes and tempo weirdness. If you’re curious what the beta version sounds like I did include it as a bonus for your listening pleasure.

For this track I was aiming to emulate the styles of Hideki Naganuma and 2 Mello to create a Jet Set Radio type vibe. I’m not as familiar with the plunderphonic dance/big beat style those two are known for so knew going in that it would be a pain to write. Not helping matters was my commitment to make sure every song was referenceable by the following track on the tracklist. After a couple of false starts, I finally got something in the form of “RUN IT BACK”. I knew going into this that I wanted more pronounced original elements in conjunction with the D2R Riff. These elements a synth bass line that I could reference in other tracks, some stabs, and some psychedelic funk guitar. The final product is something I consider to be a worthy successor to D2R’s daft punk infused dance rock. This song understands the CONCEPT OF LOVE.

+ Indecision is a funny thing. So, the idea with this track is that it was supposed to be a Shin Megami Tensei inspired battle theme. Thing is about SMT’s battle themes is that they are wildly different depending on what game you are talking about. I was torn between the thrash metal sound of classic SMT battle themes like [[track:old-enemy|“Old Enemy”]] and Synth infused Apocalyptic rock sounds of [“Normal Battle”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH82gJ7fYtk) from Nocturne. Then a thought occurred to me: what if I did both? And that’s what I did. In the move inspired by Tyler, The Creator I decided to make this song two parter. Part 1 is “Atomsplitter” which focused on delivering a fast as fuck thrash metal sound fill with synths and funny midi guitar solo. Part 2 “,Destroyer of Worlds” is a bit slower with meatier riffs and fucked up text to speech lyrics. Shout out to Votl who played the live guitar I layered with the Shreddage guitar to beef up the song. Not really much else to say about this track, I like how I arranged the [[track:battle-against-an-unyielding-foe|“Battle Against an Unyielding Foe”]] Riff in part 2

+ Another compositional highlight on this album. The idea for this track was to create a chrono trigger inspired battle theme for everyone’s favorite star child, Albion. She’s an interesting character to write a battle theme for given that most of her music leans on the more mystical/meditative side of things. Rather than abandon that aspect of her sound entirely I decided to lean into it for the intro/outro to create contrast from the more intense sections. I took heavy influence from [“Battle with Magus”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyjNbPdhQRg) and the way it handles its various sections. From the very first demo I had of this song it was one of my favorites and I think it goes toe to toe with some of the more ambitious songs on the record.

+ This song might be a controversial given what it was taking influence from. Serpaz has big earthbound energy and so I wanted to write a battle theme in that style. However, I quickly realized that a more traditional earthbound battle theme would not fit the more intense feel of the record. So I decided to get a little bit…extracurricular with the influence on this. If it wasn’t already immediately apparent, this song takes heavy influence from [[track:megalo-strike-back|“Megalo Strike Back”]] by Toby Fox. “But Rainy” I hear you ask “Isn’t Megalo Strike Back a song from Undertale/Deltarune?” The answer is no, it’s from [[album:i-miss-you-earthbound-2012|an Earthbound tribute]] so that’s how I can still connect this to Earthbound even if it’s tangential. That being said I didn’t just want to make my own version of a Toby track but I wanted add my own spin. To do that I did incorporate more earthbound-y influences like those from [“Sanctuary Guardian”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M-NkQAo-3E) and [“Pokey Means Business.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMCXMg8p9sc) In addition, I pulled a little bit of influence from [[track:welcome-to-hell|“Welcome to Hell”]] by Black Midi. The final song is a bit unhinged and all over the place but I think that fits the feel of the song perfectly imo. Fun Fact: I finished this song on April 1st.

+ This was the very first demo I wrote back when my solo was in its initial phase. I knew that I wanted a Touhou style song for this album since 1. I’m familiar with the style from previous songs and 2. I like Touhou. The difficult part of writing in this style is that getting the instrumental pallet sounding right since most of the synths that ZUN uses don’t have VSTs. I tried to emulate the sound by primarily using VSTs of famous 90s and 2000’s romplers (i.e SoundCanvas, Wavestation, M1 etc.) to give the song a nostalgic feel. The primary inspiration for this song is [“Reach to the Moon, Immortal Smoke”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETTk83qis0w) which is like one of my favorite Touhou tracks. In the grander scope of the album, I do think this song winds up being one of the weaker tracks but I do like what I was able to do melody wise for this song.

Dude jokes all the time that people think his music sounds like Kirby music and I thought who better to reach out to help with a Kirby styled track. The process this time around was pretty simple, I sent him my original demo and he added stuff and sent it back to me until the track was done. For me, there really wasn’t a singular major inspiration for this track aside from SNES Era Kirby soundtracks. Eagle eared listeners will hear a call back to my track [[track:torchlight-vast-error|“Torchlight”]] from Vol.5. In a way I wanted to redeem that track given the less than pleasant circumstances of its making. I definitely think that Levc carried this song hard especially with that slowdown section towards the end of the track which is insane. Classic kirby tracks are so much fun thanks to it's structure and melodic composition, tho ironicly I was just thinking in the "kirby forgor his lan [ADD SKULL EMOTE HERE]" OST since it's really good. You can tell by some of the sections I worked in (like that really cool C section with a ostinato melody that also shows up in the end of the track). My favorite part is the one before the climatic end, that slow section that gets even slower to BURST UP with a ton of energy! That sick move was inspired by lemon demon's ["When He Died"](https://lemondemon.bandcamp.com/track/when-he-died). Also the general vibe of that slow part was inspired by ["proto man theme"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIDkiPAqhhk) from megaman... + I’ll tell you what I very much felt out of my depth with this track. I wanted to write a Super Metroid inspired battle theme for Occeus in the vein of [[track:big-boss-confrontation-bgm-ridley-draigon|“Ridley’s Theme.”]] I was initially going to use soundfonts for this song but quickly realized that the Metroid soundfont sucked and decided to utilize synths instead. Personally, I don’t feel like I’m as well versed in utilizing synths compared to other music team members, so figuring out how to make my composition shine while using them was an uphill battle. Making things more difficult is the fact that Metroid’s music is typically less melody driven which contrasts starkly with my style. All that being said I began to pull in other influences to help move the song along. Aside from Ridley’s theme, the other big influence on this track was [[track:atomyk-ebonpyre|“Atomyk Ebonpyre”]] with its industrial feel, abrasive synths and early Toby’s signature winding melodic lines. Through combination of these two influences, I got something that was distinctly dark, alien, and futuristic. I think that song is a standout not just on the album but in whole of my composing career thus far

Initially, this was going to be a collab between me and [[artist:dbnet18|dbnet]] but for time constraint reasons it fell through. I wrote the initial demo very early on but it wound up being the last song I wrote on the album. For this track I wanted to write something in the vein of Secret of Mana’s [“Viridian Dance.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E2LqFwn9v8) However, as I got to writing parts for the collab, the songs concept mutated. I was listening to [“Battle on the Big Bridge”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycO1_T6sLHw) from Final Fantasy V and though it would be interesting if wrote an opening 6/4 arpeggio section just like that song. From there, I went wild lol. One of my biggest regrets with this album was the fact I didn’t use odd time signature as much as I would have liked. To make up for it, I went hard on the time signatures on this track. This is the closest thing to an outright progressive rock song I’ve ever written and I’m pretty proud of it.

+ Here it is, the longest, most ambitious song I’ve ever written. I knew when I pitched the album to [[artist:austinado|Austin]] back in early January, I wanted to do a big medley encompassing all the songs on the album as a closer. The obvious point of comparison for this track is [[track:rex-duodecim-angelus|“Rex Duodecim Angelus”]] by Malcolm Brown. It’s an iconic homestuck and pretty anyone would jump to write something like. That being said I grossly underestimated how much work would be involved. The track took about 70 hours across 5-6 different projects files and took about a full month to write. With no hyperbole, this is probably the largest undertaking I have ever done musically. I will talk about this song more but for the sake of ease I’ll break it into 2 parts just like the song.
+
+ Part I – The Battle Begins
+ I like to think that every VGM composer wants to compose an absolutely nutty final boss song to show off their composition chops. That ethos is basically what is driving this part of the track. I wanted to write a song that would basically soundtrack the final battle against The Naughtfather, Gaiaeon. It might surprise you that I took a very normal song writing approach for this track. The song has typical Verse-Bridge-Chorus structure with the only twist being the 4-medley section between the various parts and those riff breakdown parts in 7/4. My concern with writing a song this ambitious is that it can quickly get stale if you don’t pace it right. I used this track structure to create a cohesive “shell” that would help guide the listener along and make the track feel like it’s constantly moving forward without disorienting the listener too much. It’s at this point I’d like to thank Tee-vee for bringing this song to life with his guitar performance In terms of influences aside from RDA, I took major influence from both [“Raise Thy Sword in Pride”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4S37F7YZvw) by Yuzo Koshiro and [“The Ones Who Gather Stars in the Night”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OkSmLK1jUg) by Revo. The former is where I took symphonic rock influence from and the latter, I took the overall structure for the song from. In terms of the medley section, I tried my best to make so that every character had their chance to shine musically. Given how disparate the song on the album have been up to this point, getting them to cohesively transition into each other was a pain to put it lightly. Some segments with in the various medley sections are pretty close to original songs but some had more or less complete rearrangements to better fit the tempo of the song. The end result is a song that is largely cobbled together sounding but is that way by choice. Given that eclectic nature of the album, I think it works. This song is also notable because it’s only time that leitmotifs written other than me pop up on the album. What final battle theme would it be it I didn’t references some of the key leitmotifs from VE. Probably the most notable one of these is the interpolation of [[track:perfection-vast-error|“Perfection”]] by Rom which I arranged over the off-kilter 7/4 riff breakdown. I wanted the utilization of these motif in a way that created a loose-ish narrative of how the battle went. Those riff breakdowns represent Gaiaeon’s unnerving, hostly presence while the more heroic motifs signify the growing confidence of our heroes as the battle goes on. This confidence culminates in the reprise of [[track:a-new-world|“A New World”]] and [[track:courage-catch-322|“Courage”]] as the battle ends with our heroes battered but ultimately triumphant…right?
+
+ Part II – All for Naught
+ And this is where the albums concept becomes apparent. On top of being VE’s “Strife” album it also the Probability album. Every song you’ve so far depicts a different alternate reality with this song being about the Alt! probability depicted in [\[S]Murrit: REW/FFW](https://www.deconreconstruction.com/vasterror/2190). If Part I is long but successful battle to save the world, Part II is our heroes realizing that the battle was over before it started. Those who’ve listened to the Hollownull album will recognize the narrator as the wonderful Marcie Hobbs (NezumiVA) reprising her role as Mimesis’s canon voice. Her performance here adds so much to the desolate tone I was going for. I couldn’t think of a better way close out this album especially considering the 1 Year Anniversary of PoP. Maybe things will wind up better for our heroes next time.

I tried my best to replicate the Ghibli style whilst still keeping it Homestuck. Researching Ghibli backgrounds was quite fascinating, because until then I hadn’t realised Hayao Miyazaki liked to create a sense of openness with his scenes. The composition of them often involves a large open plain and then a small section for the focal point, so I tried doing the same thing with this piece. Keeping Rose and John to the right-hand side, while giving the sense of a much larger and calmer open space to the left.

This track was bit of a last minute addition to [DistantQuest's] soundtrack for signless's route. Without getting into the details, the track that was originally going to be used for the route had to be removed. I was more than happy to fill in and it gave me excuse to write a rock track. I took a lot of influence from the track "Burn" by Deep Purple, especially in the organ solo parts. I hope you enjoy the music and take time to enjoy [the game](https://distantpast.itch.io/distantquest) as well.

+ Out of all 3 songs, Eye of providence is the only one that wasn’t retooled for another character or purpose. Like all my songs on this album, this was intended for vol.6 as a character theme for Metatron. The main influence from this track was Toby Fox’s early homestuck “” chiptune”” work using NES Pulse, Tri and Noise. To be blunt, these plugins are pretty shit for creating believable chiptune instruments but they have a distinct crust to their sound, so I’ll let it slide. As a challenge to myself, I decided to write within NES channel limitations and only use 5 channels for my various instruments. The result is a song that tries to do a lot with very little. There’s really not a whole lot going on in this track but I think the track conveys the whimsical, yet all seeing nature of Metatron well enough.

+
+ Like most of the songs I wrote for Magnum Opus, BAaUF, was initially intended for volume 6 but wound up on here when some of the songs were retooled for this album. It was initially titled "Atomsplitter" and was originally intended to be a Dismas Track since dude hasn’t had any music specifically about him since Vol.4 (which I will rectify mark my words). This track in particular was directly inspired by the [“Altered Beast Suite”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4odRl9np7rA) off of King Gizzard’s “Murder of the Universe” album, specifically [“Altered Beast III.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXZ55v0RIcM) The whole song started with me writing a riff in 6/4 and the whole track or less was built out from there. Funnily enough, Votl actually gave me the idea for the to incorporate 7/4 into this song when he misheard the riff as being alternating measures of 6/4 and 7/4. While I didn’t do that in the song, I did make it so that the main riff, I did make it so that riff ends with a single bar of 7/4 before starting again. This might be one of my most complex songs just given the fact that it goes through like 5 different time signatures through the whole thing. At one point, it literally had a math equation to capture all the rhythmic changes going on. I digress, but I’m very proud of how it came together and happy how the pick scrapes by Votl added to the piece.

+
+ As you are probably astutely aware of at this point, By My Blade is collaboration between me and dbnet. I’ve actually been a pretty big fan of his VE work for long time prior to joining the music team and I thought it would be a cool idea to collab with him on a song. He agreed and I got to immediately starting cooking up a melodic idea for us to work on. Within an hour of tooling around on piano, I had the main melody and we got to work. From there, the collab mostly consisted tossing an FLP + stems back and forth while adding to each other’s ideas. When dbnet arranged the initial idea he gave it a “very homestuck era Toby Fox” feel, so I decided to lean into that a bit and take influence from [[track:the-blind-prophet|“The Blind Prophet”]] by incorporating Shreddage guitar and MMX2 instruments. Neither of us really had a concept going into making BMB but I eventually settled on making it a Vigilant Protector track given how heroic it sounds. It works shockingly well as a battlefield theme too. Anyway, you should give dbnet’s work a listen if you haven’t already, he’s pretty good at music imo.

+ So this track's a bit interesting. I happened to be working on a pokemon themed Laivan track for Vol.6 while the Halloween Album was being developed. I initially pitched an early version of track song for the album but it was rejected for being too upbeat to fit the vibe of the album. So instead I decided to re-arrange the melody from the original to make it more halloween-y sounding. I also added bits and pieces from [[track:be-all-end-all|End All, Be All]] from vol.4 and [[False Security]] from False Security Vol.5 Side 1 because they were both Serpaz motifs. I think of this song as a bit of a taster of what I have cooking for Vol.6 more than anything else. Perhaps you'll get to hear a finished version of that original demo one day...

+ First bit of proper Homestuck music I've done in a bit. the idea for this track was to capture the vibe and feel of the black hole that alt calliope created at the end of [[flash:8127|Act 7]]. I wanted to create a feeling a floating along while the black hole tears up the session. Not going to lie, I was incredibly burned out when I wrote this, so I think I could have done a lot better. I do love the ending that I did at the end.

+ This song is a bit of a special one since it was my first Vast Error song I wrote when I joined the team. I had actually written the main riff a few months prior to joining the team but never really got around to making a finished song with it. When I was retooling it for Vol.5, I decided to take an entirely different approach then I had previously. I was listening to a lot of Daft Punk at the time and I decided to rewrite the song in the vein of the song [[track:aerodynamic-daft-punk|“Aerodynamic.”]] Just like that song, DEAD 2 RIGHTS is built around a processed, resampled guitar riffs that I took from the original demo and dance beats like 909s and Amen Breaks. In addition, I played around with repetition by having certain elements drop in and out throughout the track. It was a bit out of my wheel house but I think the final product was good.

+
+ Okay so. this song had a bit of a troubled development. For various reasons, this song went through like 3-4 different iterations before it became the song you’re hearing now. More so, this final version of the song was almost completely written 48 hours before the album came out. Despite all of that however, Torchlight probably one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written at up to this point. In terms of inspiration for this track, I took influence from the songs [[track:softly|“Softly”]] and [[track:stellarum-salve|“Stellarum Salve”]] by RJ Lake. In addition, I also drew inspiration from the song [“Shanghai”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-01sgnVgkRc) by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I wanted this song to be bright, saccharine and little cute like those songs I mentioned previously because I felt that vibe fit Jentha perfectly. I’m pretty proud of this one not just because of how I was able to write this in such a short period of time but also because the song gave me an avenue to experiment with synthpop production for the first time. For that I will probably always love this song despite the issues.

+ So, since before I joined the VEMT, I wanted to remix [[Chamber Cultist]] from Vast Error Vol.4. That song is one of personal favorite VE songs and I thought it would be fun to remix it. When I did eventually join the team, I figured it was my time to do so. As for the song itself, I wanted to play around with the main Chamber Cultist motif in a 12/8-time signature. In additional I wanted to see how I could twist the motif while still keeping it identifiable. It’s probably the craziest song I did out of the 3 for vol.5 in terms of rhythm and it’s a favorite for that reason. “Fun” fact: the name “Ritual Summoning” comes from a type of special summoning where you have to sacrifice monsters to the grave to summon a powerful “Ritual Monster.” Not sure why but I feel that it’s perfect considering who this song is about ;)
