art of the day: There's actually none (yet), so sample nearby from 2025.

what if we ARE discrete living beings? what has to change for that to be true?

Well - for one, the "living being" must be negotiably not equal to "the organism as a whole", each of whose words carries baggage. but this isn't new to us - don't feel a draw - so not lingering.

agency and responsibility: we act independently i.e. there is NOT one contiguous flow stating your actions tomorrow follow mine today. the greater sense of "now" may encompass us as peers together, colleagues and friends and also mortal enemies, within the one moment, the window that slides forward but whose boundary on either edge is never a straight line. to be living is to be divine and sovereign, and this locus exists not in the individual but in the undivided: never mind what can be subdivided further, tend instead to what is not divided further: The beings taken as whole. respect, freedom, reproach, reparation, faith, trust, hope, love stem from this takenness as whole. a choice not to look closer, to recognize the scale of what you wish to embrace; recognition that the only "you" who is "not enough" is the smaller whole you're taking just now. willingness to take a greater you. willingness to take a smaller you.

beliefs: the meaning in the world that is distinct inside each of us. The facts that are facts today and the day after tomorrow and fantasy in between. the things that make me feel calm and you feel scared. the reasons I fight and you sleep. the distances we don't know how to measure. every different interpretation of a principle we say we share; of an experience we call our body's. and the actions we take, and of those actions the stories we tell, not to the paper record but to each other. the passages that meet not in our brain but in our heart. the signals that survive one generation of theseus' cells to the next, the journey light takes from that expired star to us, before we light our own great light and it travels back to it. stories that are personal, lustful, craving, stories that are carried in language we can't taste consciously, except just so, in language with which we'll reach only one other, until there's another, in language whose being is us, whose being we bring each of us.

If we are discrete living beings then I owe myself first a faith in me. I cannot be together with you unless there is an "I" that I believe in. we cannot be two unless we are one and one. we cannot be two unless I want that for me; and until I do, I cannot hear if you want it for you. and yet: in this way, we lean on each other. I do not want a me who isn't two with you. the only way to have that is if you believe in you. so I trust in us both wanting this, wanting this together. I trust you understand, no matter how surface or deep within you, that you owe yourself first a faith in you. and I trust you're following yours, just as I'm following mine. I trust we're in this together.
