I do not know
how far away you are.

Whisper’s sort of a stand-in here... the idea is that there are sort of, a lot of scenes of unclear or indeterminate scale and perspective, and they all frame the gap between... ‘me’ (the actual point of view) and ‘you’ (Whisper, who may belong to any of these scenes, and may belong to none)

the symbolism is not really ON PURPOSE evocative of anything lol, but

Stuff that comes to mind

  • friends, always in contact, who live so far away (...how far is ‘so’?)
  • friends who’ve parted ways (...how far are they apart?)
  • lost memories you keep bringing with you (...how lost are they?)
  • gestures vaguely: headmates

nods...did strike me at first, the ambiguity of whisper, just a face among the various spaces depicted...not necessarily that she herself is ambiguous, but her presence is, in this mixture of scenes
kind of like a "where do I fall in all of this"

nodding... nodding nodding

I guess - gesturing at “headmates”
This all works if you flip who’s “me” (make it Whisper) and who’s “you” (make it the POV)

Ah...
Reminds me of the original idea
Symmetry

Like... that distance is the same, and the framing is the same, and yet like

Each can only imagine what it’s like for the other - looking through the same tunnel of that distance, but... the other direction

Your distance from each other is defined by the gap, which is the same but seen in reverse

And so is your nearness.

Our ramblings about this remind us of The Search for WondLa, which we were reading at the time.
