<i>Clark Powell:</i> ([Tumblr](https://plazmataz.tumblr.com/post/19774190658/download-flare-cascade-i-have-recut-and))
I have recut and remastered my track Flare, as it was presented to you in the Cascade flash (rather than the calmed-down [[Flare|album version]]). I get asked a lot for this, so I decided to give it some extra love and attention.
I have attempted a number of times to put together a mix of Flare that utilized the distinctive crescendo that is recognizable [[track:flare-cascade-cut|from Cascade]], but it never seems to work well without the cinematic context. The buildup sort of leads to nothing, and then the track either ends awkwardly or fades out, and I have something personal against fade-outs. Maybe I'll talk about that someday. But not now.
I gave it another go, this time trying a decrescendo to bring the song back down from all the energy it riles up, then ending it on kind of a creepy note. I had more success here than I ever have in past attempts to cut the song together in this way.
Flare was a pretty big hit in its own right, so there's always the pressure coming from the responsibility to handle this properly. I hope you enjoy it!

<i>Clark Powell:</i> ([Tumblr](https://plazmataz.tumblr.com/post/77117466480/its-been-a-long-time-since-cascade-homestuck), 2/18/2014)
It's been a long time since [[Cascade]], Homestuck. But now that this is finally finished, it's time to release the new [[Flare]] remix!
This song has almost every musical element of the original Flare sampled and used in a new way, along with lots of new additions and a gritty EDM style of production. I wrote the original song a long time ago, and since then I've grown dissatisfied with it in some ways. How better to improve on it than with a remix?
For track art I talked to my girlfriend [[artist:andarix]], who has been doing crest design commission lately. She made one for me featuring the Green Sun and the chain of Derse for me, and I don't think it could have turned out more awesomely!
I'm afraid you can't buy or download this song yet, but it will definitely be available on the next official Homestuck album release.
And I want to give a special thanks to my patrons on [Patreon](http://www.patreon.com/plazmataz). Without you guys, I would have never have had the resources to make this remix!
<i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 12/11/2024)
This track was released about halfway through the period between [[album:homestuck-vol-9]] and [[album:homestuck-vol-10|Vol. 10]] - the 'next official Homestuck album release', which did not include this track. Though, back in 2012, Clark Powell contributed to [[track:solar-voyage]], which did show on Vol. 10 and also arranges Flare.

<i>Clark Powell:</i> ([Tumblr](https://plazmataz.tumblr.com/post/23084666959/and-for-your-listening-pleasure-a-snippet-of))
And for your listening pleasure, a snippet of something called Jane Dargason. It is an unfinished track, part of my work lately putting together some music for [[album:homestuck-vol-9|Homestuck Volume 9]]. The beautiful artwork, for which the music is arguably just a vehicle, is brought to you by the astounding talent of [[artist:tavia-morra|Tavia Morra]].
You remember [[Jade Dragon]], right? The rich wall of sound therein owes itself to the fact that it samples [[Viva la Vida]], from its namesake Coldplay album. Jane Dargason is a spiritual successor, using samplework from [[Life in Technicolor]] off the same album. All of this is combined here to surprisingly lovely effect with sounds from an unreleased track by RJ (who, as we have discussed, is the coolest).
In short, we have an anthemic Jane tune in the workings!
<i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 1/17/2024)
This upload to Tumblr featured artwork by Tavia Morra which would eventually end up used on [[album:homestuck-vol-9]] for [[track:princess-of-helium]], rather than [[track:jane-dargason|the final version of this track]] (which featured art by [[artist:dawn-davis]] instead).

Once upon a time I made some stuff for Davesprite. And then never touched it again.
But I still uploaded it around for people to hear.
It's still rough, but I'm not really planning to fix it up anytime soonish, just cause the time for that has passed.
Gooooood yeah this is kind of sub-par
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([FurAffinity comments](https://www.furaffinity.net/view/7322076/), 1/31/2012)
> Strange as it is to say, I think leaving the beat rough makes it a better fit for Davesprite. After all, he is kind of banged up and bit ragged and worn after all he's been through.
>
> Uhhhhhh can't really think of any useful insights or critiques about the song. \*Shrug\* These be some fines beats you're decking out!
Well, I don't mean the beat's rough, just overall the stuff is rough and unpolished and kind of iffy! I mean, in terms of quality, not execution, that's what I mean.
But thanks!
<i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 5/8/2026)
Davesprite2 is included, with that name, in the unofficial Homestuck Sound Test from Niklink's time, when he was gathering music from general public spaces (blogs, youtube etc). From available track listings, it was added between 10/27/2011 and 1/20/2012. The FurAffinity upload is clearly from a while later, so we aren't using the title or date from there. However, the audio is identical to the file in the sound test. We're mirroring the FurAffinity file in the listening links above.

Wooo finally got around to making another one of these.
This also took forever, as you might be able to tell in spots where I just got lazy. Also, some things I tried ended up working, some, not entirely, but I think this is done enough to put out there.
So in this, the Spy goes around, kills some people, saps some stuff, has a KIND OF EPIC ENCOUNTER with a Heavy, who will win?????
Oh come on, it's kind of obvious who will win.
I'd micspam this in TF2, but I'd have to be Spy to do so, so...it wouldn't work out well.
Also man I need to start putting these up on Youtube.
Also I just realized that every team member in TF2 is in here. Cool.
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([YouTube description](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aefGQtxrlhY))
My third mashup, the one I just finished today, huzzah.
In this one, the Spy goes around killing people, has an encounter with an Engineer, a jar of Jarate, and a hard-to-take-down Heavy. WILL HE SUCCEED???
Yeah of course he will, he has the power of [[Greenhouse]] on his side.
This is, man, some stuff worked, some didn't, whatever, I'm trying not to spend a helluva lot of time on these because I have this thing called university.
Also rendering killed the quality a little bit OH WELL.

Get it? Because it's [[Carefree Victory]] and the Heavy.....?
Okay sod off I couldn't think of anything better.
Anyway, in the MSPA TF2 server about two weeks ago, someone was like "hey, you music people should make mashups", and I was like "hahahaha no I'm busy". And then tonight, I was like "shit, let's make this happen", and this came forth.
And yes, it is kind of crappy, but it's the first time I've tried something like this. Pitch shifting is awful.
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([YouTube description](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WzJS2mv-6A))
Okay so hi
I started making some MSPA/TF2 mashups
this is the first that I made
it has a rather silly name
hopefully Youtube doesn't screw up the quality a ton
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([FurAffinity comments](https://www.furaffinity.net/view/4540275/), 9/27/2010)
> this is SO boss! C:
And the mashups are just gonna get worse from here.
SO MUCH. (blood) ((it's good))
> Im so excited, you just gained a watch
Blame the MSPA people, they're the ones who keep pestering me to do these
or more, they did at one point, and then two weeks or so later I got to it
that's just how these things work, I guess
BUT YES there will hopefully be more, until I get back to making full-length things that aren't for micspamming
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([YouTube comments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WzJS2mv-6A), 8/30/2016)
> <i>[[artist:makin]]:</i> I remember this from micspam in the SEPULCHRITUDE TF2 servers, shit was fun
ah the days when micspam could exist openly and without valve fucking up the voice comms specifically to stop it
<i>Erik Scheele:</i> ([YouTube comments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WzJS2mv-6A), 5/21/2019)
> When you realize Erik scheele made this
I'm sad I didn't do more before they stopped micspam being a thing for a while

This is just a simple little thing. I could never play it soft enough on the piano there without it refusing to play the note outright, so I hope it sounds okay.
This is almost, if not entirely based off of an improvisation I did a day or two before recording this. The melody's simple and repeated, and it drives me nuts because of that, but the shifting chords adds a bit of ambiguity to it, I think. And I messed up some spots too. Ah well.
Recorded on a grand piano in the school practice rooms. The original improvisation will be in scraps if you're interested. edit: Here: [(dead link)](https://www.furaffinity.net/view/2908552/)

Okay, so, this one came from the teacher saying "do something with 13/8!". And this is something I'm actually going to, like, make a piece of and then have someone perform it or something I DON'T KNOW. Right now I only have a 16-measure loop so....yeah.
It starts off kind of slow because I only practiced it a few times before trying to record, didn't have the time or patience to really sit down with it and work on it and get it pristine and amazing. Plus it might not exactly be the best idea to be practicing part of a piece before it's even written. Oh look now I'm rambling. :I
Hmm...The recording might be too quiet, if it is, then I'm trusting you, the viewer (oh god, not responsibility, you say) to say something, otherwise I'll never know.

13v8 fun times it goes 123 123 12 12 123 and over and over though I will probably switch it up in there somewhere at some point in the piece oh man I should go work on it now it has been 2 weeks since I saw my composition prof and I have nothing new

Universally known as "Ruins" probably thanks to [[track:ruins-with-strings]] released on Homestuck Vol. 6, this track was actually called "Ruin" on FurAffinity where Erik Scheele posted it (and the rest of his music, early on).
Both this track and [[track:idea-1-erik-scheele|"Idea #1"]] list the same keywords on FurAffinity.

This is a rather different mix of [[Ruins (With Strings)]]. Although it was uploaded to SoundCloud a few months after Vol. 5 released, we haven't got any sure idea which was produced/finalized first, so we've left the two as both branching from [[track:ruins]].
<details><summary>However, I HAVE A HUNCH...</summary>
...that it's the precise track which Bowman shared on the MSPA forums, following up Scheele's original Ruins. See Bowman's commentary: (transcribed from [video commentary](https://youtu.be/85VXWZTg-vo?t=1139))
> I also arranged strings for a piece by [[artist:erik-scheele|Erik Scheele]], which was called "Ruins". He had submitted Ruins to the forum, and I said, well, here's my, you know, decoration - my production on top of it, I said, this is Ruins with strings, and for whatever reason it was just published on the album as as, you know, "Ruins" - in parentheses - "(With Strings)". Which, I was just like, *yeah,* it's really just Ruins... but you know... whatever.
Vol. 5 at large has mastering and equalizing work credited first to [[artist:clark-powell]] and then [[artist:toby-fox]], courtesy Andrew Hussie: ([news post](https://web.archive.org/web/20100719132135/http://www.mspaintadventures.com:80/?game=autosave&s=6&p=001901))
> Thanks to [[artist:clark-powell|Clark Powell]] for doing great mastering/equalizing work on all the songs, and thanks to [[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox]] for doing <i>additionally great</i> work of a similar nature.
Plus a general credit, noting how the tracks were generally touched up in preparation for the album: (same news post)
> Thanks to all the musicians for lighting a fire under their bone bulges to get high quality files to us and of course not being able to help themselves from making all these killer upgrades to the music itself in the process.
It's possible Michael Guy Bowman, being the producer of Ruins (With Strings) itself, made adjustments before handing off the final cut musicians' track, then Clark and possibly Toby did the usual finishing touches to match/balance the rest of the album audio.
ALL IN ALL, HOWEVER, since we've only got the two versions and we don't know how far along any process *this* track had reached, we can't speculate all too meaningfully.

A bit of fan-music for Homestuck. :O
I was waiting around in the music lounge at like 7:30 in the morning, one day, then I was like "Oh man, I wonder if the guardian figures get their own battle music?" and then I wrote this out.
Really, it's supposed to be comping piano and something else, sax or something, but I have no sax skills, so sad, so this stays singularly simple. That last bit makes no sense, I'm sorry. I seem to be in a weird mood all of the sudden. I blame the orange juice.

<i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 8/13/2025)
~~Theoretical~~ common root for the versions of this track released [[track:under-the-hat|on One Year Older]] and [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|on Land of Fans and Music]].
The booklet commentary on [[track:trollcops]] makes reference to a "fan music piece" called Under the Hat, and gives the impression that this track was publicly listenable, just unofficially/independently released or posted:
> Also, it should be pointed out that in [[Trollcops (Radio Play)|the version with vocals]], there's a name drop of [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|the fan music piece]] that this is based off of. Yes, it takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.
Meanwhile [the Tumblr commentary](https://jitmakesstuff.tumblr.com/post/5889719815/and-now-more-piano-recordings-so-i-discovered) for [[track:under-the-hat|the One Year Older version]], recorded either in May 2011 or some amount of time earlier, describes that arrangement this way:
> In other words, it’s played plain, then with an improvised solo (that has some sucky bits), then through again with a little reprise.
And *[[track:under-the-hat-lofam|the LOFAM commentary]]* describes the more energetic arrangement there, this way:
> So this started off as some music for Dad. And then I was like "this isn't strife-y enough!" cause it was supposed to be strife-y and then this happened. Since it's supposed to be battle music and all, the more laid-back chill version wouldn't really work.
So this track in particular - "original", which is an unofficial title we've given it - is a recording of the track before it had ever been arranged further, "laid-back" and "chill" and simply "played plain".
~~We haven't found this track,~~ but figure it's substantially older than March 2011. (Booklet commentary: "It takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.")

Figured I hadn't done any Halloweeny music on 'ere so whipped up another quick. 45 minutes! Although this one's cheating because it's full of [[track:crustacean|borrowed]] [[track:rex-duodecim-angelus|Homestuck]] stuff. It was goin' to be some kind of Underwater Level music originally but then I remembered "Oh yeah, Halloween" so here we are.
Also hey! That [[track:sound-judgement|Terezi track WIP]] I posted up a while back has had quite a bit of interest. Should have some good news for your guys come the inevitable [[album:homestuck-vol-10|VOLUME 10]] since I've been workin' on it since then, although at this point it's kind've in "Alternate Universe"-ville given the current state of affairs and whatnot.
Right it's the weekend. Expect another Musicoodle over the weekend of some form. Might even hook up a keyboard and actually compose stuff live which is something I almost never do and really should.

<b>Canned Corner: Flight of the White Wolf</b>
Ahh, Flight of the White Wolf. This guy was in development for ages and basically supposed to be a kind of background track for PM vs Jack in their crazy god/wolf forms.
The reason it never got anywhere is for a few reasons: a) I never quite got the bit that begins at 0:42 right (That whole section went through dozens of iterations, some with live guitar, some without the [[track:rex-duodecim-angelus|RDA]] reference etc.) and b) [[track:a-taste-for-adventure|A Taste Of Adventure]] was <b>infinitely</b> better as both an orchestral piece and a remix of [[track:dissension-original|Dissension]], so I binned it.
The only bit of this track I still really like (and may save for a future project ;) ) is 0:00 to 0:42 (Which returns right at the end). The rest of it I reckon's a bit meh (Although some of the percussion I like).
Also since there's no reference to [[track:black]] or anything Jack-esque then it's even less suitable for the original goal. It's still a "reasonably" ok track, but alas didn't make the cut.
Hope you guys enjoy it!

A whole bunch of unused Homestuck music in no particular order. A good chunk of this is some final boss concepts merged with what would later become [["Oppa Toby Style"]] by Toby Fox, along with some other misc tracks. Alright, I promised I’d make a case for it, so let’s discuss the question of **Who Oppa’d Toby’s Style?**
The entire ambiguity to the case of whether or not Malcolm Brown had a hand in writing [[Oppa Toby Style]] stemmed from the following description to Ham and Steak on SoundCloud:
> A whole bunch of unused Homestuck music in no particular order. A good chunk of this is some final boss concepts merged with what would later become "Oppa Toby Style" by Toby Fox, along with some other misc tracks.
So what I want to do is first look at what this remark might actually mean, and then why it wouldn’t have made sense for Malcolm to have written any material which appears in the final version of Oppa Toby Style. And I’m realising now as I write this that I’m going to have to write an entire serious breakdown of artists’ musical techniques while repeatedly saying “Oppa Toby Style”.
**Part 1: The SoundCloud Description**
So the bit to focus on here is “A good chunk of this is some final boss concepts merged with what would later become "Oppa Toby Style" by Toby Fox”. This has caused some confusion because some people have taken it to mean, “This is the missing link between Rex English and Oppa Toby Style”, when what it’s saying at face value is, “This interpolates what would one day be Oppa Toby Style, which didn’t exist at the time”.
What’s important to note is that Malcolm says “merged with”, rather than “is”, and nowhere in this description does he indicate that “what would later become "Oppa Toby Style"” is something which he himself had penned. Let me draw a diagram:
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/ham-and-steak-lineage.png" width="480" height="270">
So to begin with, there’s no reason to believe Malcolm Brown wrote what would later become Oppa Toby Style. Now I’m going to explain why there is reason to believe that he didn’t. For the “is” scenario in the above diagram to be true – that is to say, for there to be elements of Oppa Toby Style written by Malcolm Brown – there needs to be at least one element present in Ham and Steak and Oppa Toby Style, and not in Rex English. And as it happens, there is one. The main ostinato:
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/oppa-toby-style-ostinato.png" width="486" height="60">
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit A - OstinaToby Style.mp3"></audio>
**Part 2: The Rhythm**
Now I do want to stress beforehand that everything I’m going to explain in this section pertains to Malcolm’s work in 4/4 time. I’m ignoring tracks like [[Joy And Dreams Eternal]], [[Apexhalation]], and all the rest of them, because the following just doesn’t apply to them.
The rhythm is a bit of a smoking gun because there’s very little variety in how Malcolm writes rhythm, and the main ostinato does not fall under that umbrella. The first point is that this ostinato is played throughout OTS on guitar and on bass, which you won’t find to be true of the main rhythm of any of Malcolm Brown’s tracks. The overwhelming majority of the time, one of Malcolm’s main rhythms will either be on the drums:
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit B - Drum Examples.mp3"></audio>
Or the strings:
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit C - String Examples.mp3"></audio>
Even if you’re not musical, try to clap along to these tracks. You should find that you’re clapping alongside these instruments, whether it be alongside every note, or along every phrase of notes (e.g. with DYRM, you’re probably clapping along to each descending set of eight notes in the strings (or possibly subdividing each of those phrases into two groups of four notes)).
The other, and even more important matter, is that the palette of rhythms Malcolm uses is very, very small. Disqualifying tracks without a particularly strong rhythm (or the aforementioned outside-of-4/4 tracks) I could only find three rhythms which appear in his work.
Some of the below examples feature slight embellishment – Malcolm generally adds a few notes here or there to his drum or string ostinati, because they’re built from very elementary rhythms. I’ve tried to collect examples with as little embellishment as possible in the hopes of conveying the general idea of each rhythm.
A straight rhythm (with the occasional variation of the rhythm being played on the backbeat). This is the simplest kind of rhythm there is, and the most consistent. This is a beat where every note is the same length:
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit D - Straight.mp3"></audio>
A swung rhythm, which you can think of as sounding like a “galloping” beat. This one should feel like short beats, followed by long beats. Short-long. Short-long. Short-long:
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit E - Swung.mp3"></audio>
And... I don’t think there’s a name for this one? It’s a very, very common variation on the straight rhythm with the third beat split in half. You can count it out as... One! Two! Three and four! Or maybe it might be easier to understand as... Long, long, short-short-long. Here are some examples:
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/one-two-three-and-four.png" width="532" height="236">
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit F - One Two Three-and-Four.mp3"></audio>
Now let’s refer back to the Oppa Toby Style ostinato in exhibit A.
You may notice that this doesn’t fit any of the above categories at all, even when we simplify it:
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/entirely-new-guy.png" width="532" height="236">
If you can’t read music, count out these ratios. ONE-two-three-four-ONE-two-three-four-ONE-two-three-ONE-two-three-ONE-two. Do that fast enough and you should start to feel yourself counting out the Oppa Toby Style rhythm.
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/4-4-3-3-2.png" width="532" height="236">
Now, if you’re a Toby Fox diehard, you’ll recognise this tendency to start a bar with long notes and finish it with short ones anywhere:
> <i>[[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox]]:</i> “Here's my theory about why people favor the syncopation they do: It seems like ending a measure with a shorter note ON the beat leads into the next measure more naturally. It even sounds like a leadin: dun-DUN! This is supported by the fact that one of the most popular syncopations in existence is the one in 4/4 that goes 3 3 2. This is probably the same principle.”
Let’s hear some more examples of Toby’s rhythms that end bars with shorter notes than they start with.
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit G - The Toby Lead-In.mp3"></audio>
This is the kind of thing where, once you notice how often Toby does it, you kind of can’t un-see it. The frequency with which he ends a bar quickly to lead in to the next one is astounding, and he’s right – it really is a useful tool for making music catchier!
So while it’s not impossible based on the rhythm alone that OTS’s main ostinato could have been written by Malcolm, it’s a very long shot from his signature sound, and it is something Toby pulls off a lot. But rhythm isn’t all there is to the ostinato.
**Part 3: The Melody**
Let’s look again at the sheet music to the ostinato.
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/oppa-toby-style-ostinato.png" width="486" height="60">
If you can sight-read and you know anything about jazz, you could probably peg this as being in the hexatonic blues scale (with a seventh from the harmonic minor, or sharp seventh, at the end of the second bar). If you don’t know anything about jazz, the hexatonic blues scale is the pentatonic minor scale, but you’re fun enough to have a flat fifth in there every now and then. If you don’t know any music theory at all, you’ll recognise this scale from every time Toby does something dark and jazzy sounding. Here are the first five examples I could think of:
<audio src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/Exhibit H - Toby Blues.mp3"></audio>
Malcolm, on the other hand, sticks to your usual classical diatonic scales (your natural minor and major keys, that sort of thing – music without any sharps or flats in the scale), with very, very few exceptions. In fact, I trawled through every single Malcolm Brown track I could, and found literally only one example of a flat fifth in all of his music that wasn’t a cover of someone else. It’s at the start of Time Is Money, which Malcolm describes as “based on a old [sic] track I did yonks ago” and “abandoned because it was kinda naff”.
<img src="media/misc/ham-and-steak/time-is-money.png" width="198" height="45">
<audio src="media/misc/archive/Time Is Money.mp3"></audio>
That is, to my knowledge, the only time Malcolm Brown has ever penned a single flat fifth.
**Conclusion**
Ultimately I guess what I’m asking is which possibility takes fewer assumptions to believe:
1. A key component of Oppa Toby Style, which matches Toby’s musical style exactly, was actually written by Malcolm Brown, who was uncredited, did not explicitly credit himself as writing, and who very, very rarely ever used even one of the characteristic marks of Toby Fox’s style, let alone multiple at the same time, or
2. A few people read the SoundCloud description the wrong way?

These're very short 'n sweet, and were mainly thrown up to give an idea I had for opposing versions of the same theme - namely because I wanted to reuse some stuff I did a while back (which regular viewers will recognize as This Guy [(dead link)](http://scythe-studios.co.uk/music/mspa/lupus_mortis_aeternae.mp3) which I still plan to remake/finish but possibly not for MSPA).
<i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 5/7/2026)
Malcolm Brown mentioned this track (with a link to his own website—[dead URL](http://scythe-studios.co.uk/music/mspa/lupus_mortis_aeternae.mp3)) in commentary on [[track:calliope-malcolm-brown]] and pair track [[track:caliborn-malcolm-brown|Caliborn]]. (Excerpt above! "This Guy" is Lupus Mortis Aeternae.) That URL was never archived on the Wayback Machine, but the track is preserved in the unofficial Homestuck Sound Test. That's what's linked above.
The track was uploaded to Tindeck at some point, as linked in [Rafe's musician spotlight](https://www.reddit.com/r/homestuck/comments/1p5cx0/musician_spotlight_1_malcolm_brown/). But we're not aware of Malcolm Brown uploading anything to Tindeck, so we figure this might be someone else's upload. Unfortunately the URL was not archived ([dead link](http://tindeck.com/listen/itli)).
Malcolm regularly posted commentary about his music and other work to his Tumblr blog, and the passage above indicates the track still *was* posted at a previous point. The only thing we could find on Tumblr was [[Yet More Sneakery]], which doesn't include Lupus Mortis Aeternae. So we figure this track was shared on an earlier platform (e.g. the MSPA forums). We haven't dug around much besides Tumblr.
Lupus Mortis Aeternae *is* included in the sound test from Niklink's time, when he was gathering music from general public spaces (blogs, youtube etc). Seeing as Calliope and Calliope *aren't* included there, Niklink must have grabbed this track from wherever else it was shared, earlier on. (From available sound test track listings, this track was added between 10/27/2011 and 1/20/2012.)

<b>Canned Corner: “Mother”</b>
(aka. Music that didn’t quite make it. Since I’m not updating enough amma talk more about cancelled tracks you may have heard snippits of a while back but never appeared on any album)
Aah “Mother”, this one was conceived back around [[album:homestuck-vol-9|Vol. 9]] as a Rose track, originally under the assumption that post-scratch Rose would be important and act as a kind of parallel to Rose’s Mom pre-scratch. As usual this wasn’t the case, and instead she surfed out on a blaze of glory and ICP related shenanigans.
“Mother” was basically planned as post-scratch [[Harlequin]], but with flavours of Ms. Lalonde. As such, it’s essentially [[Aggrieve]] in the style of Harlequin. Then it’s blended more with my usual weird Chiptune-with-bits-of-orchestra thing. The net result is kind of a more mystical, studious piece.
I kinda like it, but it doesn’t really do anything, and its only original bits are abandoned fairly quickly due to the shortness of the track. Plus when it became apparent that post-scratch Rose has pretty much no influence on the plot, it was brushed to one side and I started on something else.

<b>Yet More Sneakery</b>
More WIPs! 5 Tracks I’m currently working on for Homestuck.
Those paying attention should spot [[flash:4541|Anbroids]], but it's slightly different - I did a bit of a redash to make it a bit funkier, but Andrew already used the first one. Might release [[track:anbroids|"V1.0"]] for free and call this one [[track:anbroids-v2|"2.0"]] or something.
As for the rest, Music References: Can you spot them all!? :p
Joking aside, I do like sliding little references into me tracks. Most of the time it's because I've a specific character in mind when doing a bit of music, and the characters have enough recognizable themes to help emphasize this (The most obvious of my examples being [[track:rex-duodecim-angelus|RDA]], but [[Do You Remem8er Me?]] is another one), and the other half the time it's because it sounds cool (And also I do like a bit of consistency in my soundtracks, but then I grew up listening to and playing video game music)
I can assure anyone worrying that there is still quite a bit of original stuff and it’s not all just me remixing troll themes into love songs.
Holy crap, new solo album idea!

Here’s a preview of what I’ve got so far. Not a huge amount of Karkat/Terezi injection in yet, or percussion for that matter, but I’m hoping to combine the two in some glorious union that will make even the hardest, strongest, man-horse-lusus be reduced to a pile of quivering tears and black liquid sorrow.

Whew... this is a really, REALLY old one of mine. I wrote the first version of "Bane" in 2001, and this version (the 'latest' one) was written in 2005. It's been a long time since I did anything with this theme, but I still really like it. I've been thinking about making a [[track:bane-p-s|newer version]] of it (since *surely* I've gotten better over the past decade, right?).
I kind of regret not slipping this theme into Homestuck somewhere; I feel like this could have easily been a recurring signature theme for projects I work on (like [[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox]] does with [[track:megalovania-ebhh|'Megalovania']]).

at one point, kids, i was working on expanding “descend2” (what would become cascade) into something bigger and longer. obviously that fell through and tensei finished his track as he wanted to do it, which is well and good, but hey.
this is as far as i got. maybe i’ll finish it one day. there are a buttload of problems here, most notably the sburban jungle samples in the lead up to the drop and the fact that i didn’t make it my own, enough, at this point.

The Descend2 reference in this track, pointing to [[track:descend2-11-24]], is arbitrarily chosen. All versions of Descend2 were posted to Tindeck around the same date ([[date:11/24/2010]]), so we assume the latest, "most complete" version was sampled, but we haven't musically backed this up yet.

If you bought [[album:homestuck-vol-7|Homestuck volume 7]], you might be familiar with the bonus track I did on there, [[“White Host/Green Room”]], which had this garbled cameo of several Homestuck songs in the intro. If that’s the case, this song might sound familiar because it actually appeared in there for a bit.
Its full name is “The King in Red”, and its supposed to be this weird pseudo-classical apocalyptic black metal remix of [[Karkat's Theme]]. The reason I never finished this up is because I was pretty dissatisfied with the choir samples, which simply weren’t up to the task.
Human voice is said to be the single hardest thing to emulate through samples, which I guess is because people are generally used to hearing human voices all the time, so they’re much more likely to pick up on stuff that sounds ‘off’ than in the case of, for example, a sampled hurdy gurdy.
In a lot of ways, it’s kinda similar to the uncanny valley problem with visual art; making a convincing and realistic human face through 3D modelling is very hard to pull off, and I don’t think it’s been seriously attempted since the Final Fantasy movie (And we all know how that turned out for them).
Even modern CGI movies like Avatar avoid the concept by creating a distinctly alien race that gets just enough humanlike features to make them look relatable and 'cute’.

Here’s another work in progress. This one is for Jack who is possessed by Lord English, so it uses a bit of the melody from [[“Black”]]. It also borrows quite a bit from [[Thin RED Line|Arakune’s Theme]] from the game Blazblue. I tried to give it a bit of a neoclassical feel in the same way as [[“Dance of Thorns”]].

The SoundCloud description for this track reads "Homestuck remixes, lots of them." just like the other tracks also uploaded on [[date:8/12/2011]], so it was presumably included with the original [[album:shenanigans-mspa]] set. It's not included there today though, and was probably replaced by [[track:irradiated-shenanigans-mspa|the updated version]] ([[track:irradiated-lofam2|made for LOFAM2]]).
Despite its SoundCloud upload in August, this original version of the track dates earlier than [[track:irradiated-animation-version|the animation version]] from February 2011.
This track has the same duration as the later version. By that alone, it's ostensibly possible that this track was included on Shenanigans: MSPA's [Bandcamp release](https://web.archive.org/web/20130409111336/http://sparksd2145.bandcamp.com/). But it doesn't seem likely, since the updated version is from [[date:6/20/2012]], predating the Bandcamp release by three months. [The download from skaia.net](http://dl.skaia.net/albums), aligning with Bandcamp's track list, affirms the updated version is what got included there.

A HUNDRED THOUSAND YEARS AGO...
far in the depths of paradox space
a new lifeform is about to be created
one whose origin is as enigmatic as the glimmer of a musclebeast's teat
some are carried in by storks
some are recreated from paradox slime
others appear wet out of their best friend's magical nonexistent vagina
but regardless of how these beings may be formed
they all come into the world with a special force:
one called
LOVE
this is the story of one man's search for love and truth
in a universe forgotten by time
the story of those fearful creatures
those that we call

Greetings, useless peons
You've done terrible so far
Treading venom pools for eons
Suffering with no scar
Mercy everlasting
Hiding who you are
Welcome to the dark side
My name is Jack No...
Iiiiir!
I'm the overlord of badass
The shadow magic priest
Chosen ones cry out for mother
Of trouble you're the least!
I really hate these stupid hats
And that stupid king
That overarching monarch
Can shove something up his thing
(GRAVEYARD STUFFERS)
Oh yeah, they call me Jack Noir
You might think that I'm the star
When really there's a dad who makes me glad
I haven't had the pleasure, yes to treasure
This saturnine existence
'Tween these fenestrated walls
Goodbye, useless peons
You were horrible in life
Jumped off the galleon
'Thout so much as a Strife
[[Archagent everlasting]]
I'll tear the sky ajar!
Goodnight everybody

We looked into this track in December 2023 (Discord, [#hsmusic-chat](https://discord.com/channels/749042497610842152/779895315750715422/1184982162844418068)). During December 2011, Neil Cicierega ran a [[Brodyquest]] remix contest—of some sort—on Tumblr. Toby was on the ball and submitted a track the next day. It was 0:55 long and is the one we've linked above, in a media.hsmusic.wiki link. However, the version of Brodylovania found in the unofficial Homestuck Sound Test (current YouTube link above; also [[media:misc/archive/3-28 Brodylovania.mp3|wiki archive]]) is longer, 1:23.
We were starting from the YouTube description that constantDweller wrote in their upload (["Brodylovania - Homestuck Soundtest"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoQsVkjYt6w), mysteriously 2:35 instead of 0:55 or 1:23):
> Original “Release Date”: Not released but created in 2011
>
> This song is a parody of Brody Quest by Neil Cicierega, Toby probably made it for the 2011 Brody Quest remix contest that Neil hosted on his Tumblr. The robotic voices say “Adrien Brody” repeatedly, this is the actor that the original Brody Quest was making fun of. The person speaking at the start is Toby himself.
We wrote in December 2023:
> wait ?? oh god<br>
> okay so tumblr: 0:55, clearly cut off<br>
> sound test: 1:24, still cuts off but a bit later<br>
> youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoQsVkjYt6w 2:35 cuts off at the same "loop" point so<br>
> i think the uploader just looped it???<br>
> but that doesnt explain the 1:24 version in the sound test
Niklink added:
> there is... one possibility<br>
> maybe the 1:24 version was posted on mspaf [the mspa forums]<br>
> i put brodylovania in the sound test and i dont remember the particulars

There are two versions of this track archived; a [[media:misc/archive/brodylovania/tumblr_lwjkxwnNJD1qjxbkwo1.mp3|0:55 version]] posted on Tumblr (which has Toby's commentary above), and a [[media:misc/archive/brodylovania/3-28 Brodylovania.mp3|1:23 version]] in the [Homestuck Sound Test](https://sanctferum.tumblr.com/post/638058644066435072/homestuck-sound-test-12202020-edition). The YouTube upload linked ~~above~~ [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoQsVkjYt6w) is seemingly a fan-extended version of the Tumblr one.
The date for this track is taken from the shorter (and presumably earlier) Tumblr version; duration, from the longer version.
It's not known exactly where or when the version on the Sound Test originates, but Toby's post with commentary is the only one tagged #brodyquest on his Tumblr as of [March 24, 2012](https://web.archive.org/web/20120324114951/http://fwugradiation.tumblr.com/tagged/brodyquest). <i>Quasar Nebula:</i> (wiki editor, 5/5/2026)
We are excluding listening links for this track because we haven't located a source indicating the artist ever made it publicly available. For the wiki's purposes, we *are not* using the 4/13/2018 or later versions of the unofficial Homestuck Sound Test as a source for Toby Fox's tracks.
<i>ruby:</i> (wiki editor, 4/7/2025)
As Jebb stated below, there is some uncertainty surrounding this version of Cascade. It is presumably based on a wip version that came anywhere between [[track:cascade-beta|Beta]] and [[track:cascade-directors-cut|Director's Cut]]. As we have no other [[artist:tensei]]-produced versions that came between those two, it is impossible to tell when exactly this one came from. The easiest way to think about it is that this is an edit of what would eventually become Director's Cut. That's why, as of writing this commentary, and unlike as of the writing of Jebb's commentary, this track is listed as referencing Director's Cut. The [[track:sburban-jungle]] and [[track:beatdown-strider-style|Beatdown]] references come from [[artist:tensei]]. It's impossible to tell whether [[artist:toby-fox|Toby]] had access to any stems for the song and was able to make the edits heard in this version himself, or if Tensei provided the base and Toby *only* layered in the additional instruments, but what it comes down to is that Cascade1 isn't in itself relevant to Tensei's "Cascade canon", from [[track:descend-original-version]] to the full [[track:cascade]], which uses a combination of Beta and Director's Cut.
<i>Jebb:</i> (wiki editor, 12/26/2024)
This track actually samples some unknown nebulous OLDER version of Cascade which was made inbetween Cascade (Beta) and this one. From what it seems Toby's addition here are the instruments layered on top of the standard Cascade sounding thing, and the Sburban Jungle and Beatdown references are by [[artist:tensei]]. However, we do not have the original version of Cascade which this track samples, so as it is now we are using this track as the reference for [[track:cascade-directors-cut]], as it is the earliest known version of this track which has that little bit at the beginning.

Included on the Homestuck Sound Test starting with its 4/13/2017 edition. We understand this track to precede [[Nautical Nightmare]] based on Toby's booklet commentary there:
> Originally Nautical Nightmare was an orchestral piece for Rose's Denizen. I wasn't completely satisfied with the end result so it was ultimately scrapped, but the melody and chords kept dancing in my head.
We don't have a precise date for this track, but in the same commentary, Toby wrote that he decided to remake it "MANY months later". (AlterniaBound released in March of 2011. Rose's denizen was introduced [in March of 2010](https://homestuck.com/story/1626).)
Wiki editor Lilith compared the ways this track and [[track:descend]] ([[album:homestuck-vol-5]], June 2010) both include Endless Climb. ([#music-discussion](https://discord.com/channels/749042497610842152/749067042250031214/1282186638545649676), 9/8/2024)
> <i>[[artist:lilithtreasure]]:</i><br>
> so [[descend]] references [[endless climb]], but I've noticed that the way it sounds there, here in this one (Nautical Climb) (around 1:13), it's like, less buried and rawer
<audio src="media/misc/nautical-climb-endless-climb.mp3" inline></audio><br>
<audio src="media/misc/descend-endless-climb.mp3" inline></audio>
Also, this track's name is probably unofficial. "Nautical Nightmare" *could* be derived from "Nautical Climb", but the latter just makes sense as a combination of the two main two themes apparently referenced. [NSND](https://homestuck.net/music/references.html), for comparison, lists Nautical Climb as referencing Nautical Nightmare, rather than the other way around. Anyone aware of this track probably didn't notice Toby actually talked about it in commentary. (But Lilith did!)
This track is spiritually succeeded by [[Earthsea Borealis]], as Toby noted in his booklet commentary.
> I have since done something better called "Earthsea Borealis." Maybe you will hear it someday.

Rest in peace.

> ok question.
> does [[track:doctor|doctor]] reference penumbral phantasm, or is it the other way around?<br>
> the wiki doesnt say and i couldnt find the info anywhwere else online (albeit i only looked briefly). is that like. unknown? - Dyst<br>
neither<br>
the original pp was a melody that was quoted in [[Savior of the Waking World|savior of the waking world]], which combines doctor and penumbra phantasm successfully and inspired a lot of pp remixes with doctor in them<br>
and every version of PP that has leaked is post sotww I think<br>
I guess you can make a case that all existing versions of PP reference doctor<br>
definitely not the other way around
[...]
<i>Niklink:</i><br>
there's this one part of PP that sounds almost identical to the first few notes of doctor and they often get blurred together

Well, very little is known about penumbra phantasm<br>
It's referenced in like 1 toby track<br>
Its melody is heavily based on [[Doctor|Doctor's]]<br>
There's a piano sketch and [[track:null-vol8|a tiny teaser]] i think<br>
That's more or less it<br>

Should we stick a<br>

I think it's just time to retire the "it's penumbra when doctor is one note off" and just admit it's a doctor variation that PP used

<i>wertercatt:</i><br>
Penumbra still needs Doctor added to its references tho.

it's surprising that penumbra isn't listed as referencing doctor, but [[track:patient|patient]] is

yeah that's odd

Wait why does it not have doctor listed

It's an oversight!!

Guys, I swear, it's an oversight. This one - I do believe - is not intentional.

*(Continued from [[track:liquid-negrocity-original]])*
And then later I was like, I should remake this, this is gonna be, Plasmatic Blaquaciousness, so I made it.
And I added [[track:im-a-member-of-the-midnight-crew|this quote]] at the beginning, and it even did this. And it was almost badass.
I- Uh, I think I've done this evolution before.
But yeah, that's Plasmatic Blaquaciousness.<br>
But yeah, that's slightly more dense and then I just- I made [[Black]], which is the best.
Which kicks ass. And it's probably overall, the best song I've ever made. I mean, [[Descend]] is great, but overall, Black, it's the better package.
