    Can it be? After a year and a half in the making, the "Art First Album" is finally out?
    Typically at UMSPAF, musicians produce the music first, then visual artists illustrate every track. For this album, we flipped the script: developing it in the same pattern as [[group:canmt|CANMT's]] [[album:jpeg|.jpeg]], the artists made the illustrations first, and then musicians created tracks based on them.
    The album began work on 23 September 2023. 568 days later, it is finally out in the world. This thing's old enough to walk at this point, but I promise the wait wasn't for nothing. It has some of the best fanmusic I've heard outside a LOFAM (and I'd go so far as to say it rivals a LOFAM in quality).
    So, after that protracted development period, I'm beyond delighted that the wider world is finally getting to...
    **Fondly Regard Illustration**.

    I had a few ideas for my art piece, but ultimately decided on something TTRPG related and remembering the Soul-Fraying Games comic, it was the perfect combo! The characters had some great designs for their D&D selves, and it's a shame we didn't get to see any of their campaign actually play out because pretty sure Terezi would have had some great encounters for them!
    For the fight I wanted to show off their chosen classes as well as their personalities as best I could, hence why despite Dave and Karkat both being knights, Karkat is immediately going to rush the fight whereas Dave is in a more defensive stance. I did toy with the idea of creating two versions, with Karkat as the 1/2 undead, 1/2 uneaten crab-sandwich but in the end decided against it. Who knows, I may revisit the piece and make that version a reality.

    <i>Circlejourney:</i>
    Adore the concept of the art piece! As a TTRPG afficionado myself, I loved having the opportunity to break out the orchestral instruments and really lean into the high fantasy sound. Someone described this as music you might hear at the fantasy tavern - mission accomplished, I think.

    I wanted to create a piece that takes inspiration from the "TOUHOU EURO TRIGGER" series, a flashy, tech styled cover with a lot of eye catching shapes, colors, and text.

    Sepulchritude, but <i>Pieta</i> style

    <i>Circlejourney:</i>
    Problem Sleuth (the character) using Sepulchritude at the climax of *Problem Sleuth* (the comic) is still one of my favourite moments in any comic I've read, and I love how Selan Pike captured it here. I wanted to make a track reflecting the themes threaded through both the comic scene and the Piéta motif. Chopped samples were meant to gesture to the reality-bending intensity of the moment, while the orchestral chimes and xiao relate to the divine references. The quotes are of two of my favourite [[album:weird-puzzle-tunes]] tracks - I enjoyed the chance to call back to fond early memories of UMSPAF and the first album they released after I joined, which Selan Pike incidentally also illustrated for! We've come full circle.

    It's very funny to look at all of the absolutely glorious art pieces present in this album and then gaze upon mine, drawn in MS Paint, with my signature mouse. HOWEVER, i must say - in the end, i really like the execution of the idea. The dual colors, the Libra sign acting as a table for the jury, the nooses metaphorically pointing towards the centre.... I really like the composition in this piece, is what i want to say.

    I didn't really have any ideas for this piece going in, i sorta just started doodling and each piece fell into place slowly. An interesting (bad) thing about the MS Paint chalk brush is that it has a lot of very sharp angles, thus it ends up looking very unnatural when you use it to draw anything at all. I ended up manually softening the edges of basically every single instance where they were way too sharp. Ended up making the whole thing look a lot more polished.

    At one point a version without the mouth was attempted, however i felt like it didn't look feral enough, like how the current version does (because we ALL know that Terezi loooooves her executions).

    Finally, thanks a lot to Gryo for picking up this piece! The more dramatic NSMB Ghost House vibe is great, and really does fit the art.

    <i>Ender:</i>
    Even though I spend the majority of my time on random Homestuck projects, my true love is The Dark Crystal. This piece is specifically inspired by the Wall of Destiny from the movie, which I have actually seen in real life. It's cool as hell. I wanted to depict a prophetic wall hidden deep in the bowels of Earth C, foreshadowing the eventual timeline loop of Lord English dying in the Epilogues...or at least in half of them. There's also the implication that Caliborn will one day be born on Earth C itself, so no matter what they do or where they go his influence is always there. The text on the top and bottom is written in Alternian, and the bottom ended up being obscured a bit by the torches, but here's the full prophecy:

    "To the canon we must adhere<br>Two timelines the choice will steer<br>Time will tell, the truth is clear<br>The demon is already here"

    It's a half-decent, syllable-matching word replacement of the iconic prophecy from the Wall of Destiny in The Dark Crystal, which is:

    "When single shines the triple sun<br>What was sundered and undone<br>Shall be whole, the two made one<br>By Gelfling hand, or else by none"

    One of these days I'll make part two to this piece by making a massive Lord English puppet and choreographing and puppeteering my own version of this whole ending battle in question. Like that big skeleton from Kubo and the Two Strings. Man I love puppets. But that's a lot of work so for now you get some drawings and also A Very Homestuck Puppet Show.

    I saw a wip of the artwork and my brain immediately went to The Legend from [[album:deltarune-ch1-ost|DELTARUNE]], so I decided to basically remake The Legend with Homestuck motifs, focusing on English for obvious reasons.
    instead of just recreating the song, I wanted to give it a more orchestral vibe, with some of the original elements serving as backing.

    the end result is a kind of hybrid between Toby's style and more serious orchestra, which I think sounds really cool!

    While I pity Aradia for not doing much of anything important past-act 5, I always really liked the role she took on in the vastness of The Furthest Ring. Finally being able to be happy and trying to make eternity a little less miserable for all the alternate timeline ghosts, I just think it really suits her and I always enjoyed her appearances in the second half of the comic. Whenever she talks about being happy, I'm happy (i really like aradia guys shes soooooo coooooooooool)

    But, between act 5 and act 6 I read Problem Sleuth! And in that comic there is a certain figure with a very simmilar role to act 6 Aradia! Ever since I first realised this comparison I kept coming back to this idea in my head of Death and Aradia guiding/entertaining/consoling the dead as a duo! It was really the very first thing I thought of when trying to brainstorm an art piece for this album! I get so giddy at the idea of them interacting... So I drew them playing Connect 4!

    I wanted to cram as much as I could think of in this piece, the bottom being a reference to the lotuses the afterlife is made out of, alongside skulls and tentacles, evocative of the horrorterrors. The top of the frame has bubbles and the background has horrorterrors because of course, and the aurora borealis is there because.. damn I HAD a reason, but I forgot what it was... Sollux gets to hang out too, because I love them. If you look closely we also have the two insect professors from Problem Sleuth (and bonus pages). I just think they're neat characters not enough people think about and they're already sorta all over the place.

    There are more details I could list out, but I don't want to describe absolutelly everything, I've rambled enough. Point is I'm really attached to the concept of this piece and I think Julian did a stellar job making a cozy song that fit its premise! :D

    <i>JulianMOCs:</i>
    I wanted to create a song that felt familiar to the listener even though they've never heard it. Almost like the type of song you would find on an old cassette you picked up from a thrift shop, or downloaded on some forum way back when. You don't know who made it, but for some reason it never left you. This sort of aesthetic of a song trying to be remembered is very fascinating to me, and I thought it matched the context of the artwork very well.

    The song itself was created with a bunch of random sequences that came to me naturally, almost as if creating a bar for the melody was like dropping a fishing line into my mind, though I reeled in far too many boots before completing the song.

    This song was inspired by "Tequila" (by The Champs). You can probably tell by the rhythm and "flavour" it has. After that initial idea, the only thing left was adding the sounds and energy of Nepeta's main theme (Walls Covered In Blood).

    I really wanted to infuse this song with that sense of "irony meets sincerity" the original has (With that title + the ammount of heart the alterniabound version has). But keept it 200% more energetic so can dance to it or something.

    The more I listen to this song, the more I like it... maybe I should steal it, and use it in the future... would Nepeta get mad at me for that?... I would be sad if she does...

    ok in all seriousness tho, i think Damara, *both* versions of her, might be the most tragic character in all of Homestuck, as well as the one that gets misunderstood and mischaracterized the most. with this piece i wanted to picture an alternate timeline where Demoness not only gets the chance to get revenge on those who hurt her, but also gets to be a total BADASS while at it. not in a "i'm the big bad now" kind of way, but in a "oh those bad guys? yeah i took care of them" sort of way, delivering some well deserved justice, feeling pretty proud of herself about it, then just taking some time to chill
    this girl, *EVERY* version of her (looking at you pre-Scratch Damara) deserve all the love in the world so remember to hug your local Damara! ^u^

    So this piece actually started as a sketch I made when I was around 16. I made it for a drawing class as a piece to work on perspective (and because I wanted to insert my fandoms into my schoolwork as many dorky teenagers do). I had wanted to clean up that piece for a while now and make a finished drawing out of it, so when the pitch for this album was just "hey art team draw whatever you want" I decided on this direction pretty much instantly.
    The actual drawing process for this took FOREVER. The rendering looks simple in hindsight but I had to redo it like four times in order to get it to look right. The earliest sketches I have date back to September or October 2023 and I didn't end up finishing it until September 2024. So that's like... a whole year's worth of me taking this on bit by bit. But I think it's something I can be proud of!

    I had a vivid idea of what I wanted to do for the track since I basically first saw the artwork. I knew I wanted to shy away from the feel of Eridan's original theme by taking it and twisting it into an intense, darker version. I had recently aquired the Zero G - Datafile sample CDs, so I made use of them by sticking in the acid base loop that's used prominently throughout the track. Since this song goes along with Eridan's descent with his little Murderstuck shenanigans, I thought a nice nod to the [[flash:4085|"5X SHOWDOWN COMBO"]] with "MeGaLoVania" and "mIrAcLeS" would be a pretty cool nod. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS: FISH!

    At some point, I realized how magical of an experience it was to discover and read Homestuck back when I was still a wee lad. Something about the sheer scale and size of it all, combined with growing up... I don't know. It's such a unique experience.

    yoyoYolo's piece is so incredibly evocative, it was hard not to want to make a track for it right away! I wanted this track to sound "like 2009 again" - both Homestuck and the artwork remind me of how it felt to be alone discovering the internet for the first time, back when it was all shiny and new, full of weird corners, novel experiences, and people I'd never met. I have a pop-leaning voice / production style, so I figured why not lean into it and pay homage to late 2000s pop.

    A piece that features new unabstracted sprites of Dirks Bro and ICP. I've always thought about how cool it would have been for there to be an actual strife flash for this fight and how awesome the song for this hypothetical flash would be.

    <i>Jebb:</i>
    Coulrocide is a track which i had worked on for quite a while, and one which I am personally very, very proud of. It has everything - orchestra, electronic, breakcore... I tend to compose music which i would personally listen to, and this is DEFINITELY such a track. There's a hell of a punch in it, and for a reason.

    While making this song i had realized that there aren't really any tracks made for the grand battle of the ICP vs Alpha Strider??? So, of course, I tried to give the scene justice, considering its context.

    Every part goes back and forth between Dave and ICP having the upper hand in the battle, and it is reflected in the feel and the motifs of each separate segment. I tried to represent the full story with the melodies, from the start to the gory end. If you listen closely, you can hear each part:

    - (0:00) The Juggalos overlooking their domain.
    - (1:23) Dave appearing to challenge them.
    - (1:45) The combatants walking towards eachother, walk transitioning to run.
    - (2:00) The battle commencing.
    - (5:46) The juggalos' last ditch attempt to kill Strider.
    - (5:55) Single conclusive SLICE to kill them both, the clowns' bodies falling heavily onto the ground.

    You awake to find yourself walking in a memory. You feel as if the walls themselves are hostile, as if they know you are impeding another's dream. A cold nostalgia for a childhood home that was not your own. You are likely to be eaten by a skibidi liminal banban.
    
    This was actually inspired more so by MyHouse.wad than any of those silly things though. I tried a lot of weird stuff with textures here to try to capture something dreamlike. It really came together with the GameBro as the finishing touch.

    <i>Tycoon:</i>
    So I am a fan of analog horror, and when I saw the artwork I had to grab it. This track was taken from an old piece I had lying around and revamped into what it is now. Previously, it had been a mildly creepy aesthetic, but much more ambient. This version, I feel, is much more in tune to what one would expect with an analog horror piece of media. Glitches, deep burrowing noises and rumbles that you can't quite place, a minor key! Mix all that up with a bit o' Chemical X and you got yourself your very own homemade horror-ific hymn!

    Whistles the eternally pure hearted virtuoso clown/sex worker/revolutionary messiah soars high above the paltry concerns of the world, in search of his one true guiding light: the unequalled, unimpeachable, and definitely un-cannibalistic Ringmaster Pendlecoat. Will his judgment bring joy or despair to his clownish allies Gumblin and Doodlebean? Find out in the next spectacular issue, which will be releasing to legions of adoring fans any day now! Any day now...

    Completed or not, The Starlight Calliope remains my favorite thing Hussie's ever done, the art in particular having been deeply embedded in the bedrock of my own style since the day I first saw it. I've long hoped to see more fan media made for this comic, and this album seemed like a perfect opportunity to strong-arm a Whistles Musical Theme into existence. Ucklin of course exceeded all my expectations!

    <i>Ucklin:</i>
    Monckat's incredible art was the impetus for me finally reading *Whistles*. As I did, I was trying to think of an angle for lyrics that would convey the most important parts of who Whistles is in his setting— In a way that wasn't so specific as to not have an emotional anchor in real life. I decided to through the eyes of someone who sees the best in him, Doodlebean, and to imagine what she might be enamored with in him. He's someone unwaveringly optimistic in an objectively dark world, and that's a trait I think can inspire awe when you feel grounded yourself. That's how I ended up with the chorus. Then, Monckat mentioned they originally imagined something darker and more like the band Clowncore to go with the art. Oh! Wellll... I didn't want to throw away the chorus, but I paired it with a much more stagnant and distorted verse, and a good old DVS sax bridge. I didn't plan it from the start, but I feel like that juxtaposition was lucky because it highlights how Whistles' optimism verges on unnerving!

    Nepeta's my favourite character, alongside Tavros. She's really interesting, and a lot of fandom either flattens her into one of two dimensions: silly catgirl and utter badass, or elides her altogether (It doesn't help that she's treated like an afterthought in the actual comic and unceremoniously killed off-panel) In truth, she is much more than that and you can find a lot of depth with a little looking.

    In any case, I love her and wanted to add to her songlist and character art. We've mostly got cutesy fluffy songs for Nepeta, even the ones with names that imply otherwise (Walls Covered in Blood comes to mind) so I figured something a bit harder hitting would add some variety to the playlist.

    For those that know me, my choice in artwork is obvious. For those that don't know, I am one of the few remaining holdouts in the Xeno section of the fandom that enjoys speculating about how Homestuck's aliens could be and look... alien! I've actually done a similar piece a few years back - same design, pose, character and angle - and it was really interesting to see how much I've improved since then (though I went a liiitle bit overboard with the effects maybe.

    I based her cleft lip & palate on references of cats with that condition and decided that a central cleft would highlight the snarl best. Speaking of the snarl, having Nepeta emote like this is a deliberate change from how I usually depict angry trolls, which involves rolling the lip to show the gumline like a baboon. I figure a combination of her isolated upbringing, autistic traits, and the cleft itself making it more difficult to do that motion all adds up to her taking a more feline approach to this (and probably other) facial expressions. This makes her hard to read for other trolls, but on the plus side easier for us, so it's clear that this is no happy kitty.

    Anyway, I really enjoyed working on this and I am loving the sound of the musical accompaniment! This album is a blast and I am overjoyed to have gotten to work on it! <3

    Screenshot of the obscure MMO RPG "SBURB 2: Online™", depicting a PARTY of PLAYERS participating in a RAID against one of the endgame BOSSES of the "The Clownprince of Zillyhoo™" EXPANSION PACK.

    Inspiration hit when I, out in the wild, encountered a short PepsiCola AU comic about them growing up playing a SBURB MMO game together. Coupled with that we can never have enuff STRIFE battle themes and me being a FF14 fan, I got an idea about classpected players taking on a SBURB Raid boss forcefully lodged into my brainwrinkles. I also felt that NPC enemies needed som love, so I decided on the Lich(?) thing from the opening of [[flash:4109|[S] Cascade]] would fit the bill as the raid boss.

    PS: Also my tablet broke so I hade to draw the whole thing using my feckin' mouse lmao- you can pretty much tell by the consistent brush sizes and the lack of gradients you get from using a digital pen.
    PPS: I'm suprised (in a glad kinda way) that Tee-vee pick mine. Big fan of your HS compositions!!!

    An orchestral boss battle theme inspired by themes from several JRPGs. I don't get to do big epic orchestra-centric music that much, so that made for an opportunity to flex my orchestral muscles for once and come up with a workflow for this kind of stuff (and made plenty of mistakes along the way :p). Overall even though it took me much longer than usual to complete I think it came pretty close to what I had envisioned so I'm happy with it!

    As an OG [[group:canmt|cool and new music team]] member, the [[album:jpeg|jpeg]] album we did was one of my favourites ever, so when UMSPAF started one too I absolutely wanted to join.
    The artwork here by Jas really spoke to me, because I always love the idea of the characters performing music together in Homestuck related media, and Chixie is my favourite Friendsim character. And when the prompt said "Punk rock-y/Any vocals would be good", I thought this one was a match made in heaven for me specifically.
    This one went through multiple iterations, as I was cycling through various folk punk bands that were favourites of mine for inspiration. Against Me and The Front Bottoms were considered, as well as a [[artist:scott-stutzman|Scott Stutzman/Kasko Lunford]] type track, but eventually I settled for a classic AJJ style song, with a yelled rap section which was inspired by Jeff Rosenstock.
    This is a very political song by nature of it being folk punk. The first verse went through the most changes. Sometimes, you just read about all the serious stuff in the news and as an artist, you might feel like none of what you do matters. But I think making art in the face of tragedy is a radical action itself. It doesn't compare to like, direct action or community organizing, but to express yourself and grow your soul in a world that wants you to stay quiet and die can be a powerful thing.

    When I made this art, I genuinely had a very insane obsession with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
    Looking back at it now, it's not my best work, but it's genuinely a big step for me to get my art in something for once. I only recently had gotten into Homestuck, but it's definately influenced me somewhat.

    <i>Ucklin:</i>
    Inspired by Dalek's vision, I took some inspiration from \~Sono Chi no Sadame\~, and tried to write something that felt grand and tied together the stories of all three olivebloods! I haven't watched Jojo, but it seems like it's about people being related to each other and having superpowers, and fate. That's enough of a common thread with the dancestor situation for me! It was also a chance to revisit some melodies I really like: My old tune Oolongcat and a few fansongs. The guitar part for the verse was played by my partner on a weird beast we got from Goodwill. It seems to be a full size guitar neck stuck onto a kids' electric guitar body, with a built in speaker. Slight changes in pressure when fingering starts to make the notes bend noticeably. It's also Shrek green!

    <i>Pax Probliscum:</i>
    When I saw Artatruc's great artpiece I knew this was the perfect moment to create a track I'd imagine the Strilondes would make if they got together for a recording jam! It loosely follows the structure of Derse Dreamers, but with a few letimotifs scattered throughout the track that I felt represents each of the Strilonde identities, as well as including the other Derse tracks of the Prospit and Derse album (the objectively better side of the album :P).

    Dave and Rose were already featured in Derse Dreamers with the Atomyk Ebonpyre and Endless Climb motifs respectively. Adding in Even in Death for Roxy was an easy choice, and builds momentum in the track. However, finding a good motif for Dirk was a bit more difficult, until I remembered that Austin, Atlantis had the perfect melancholic tone to lead the last section of the song into Now I'm A Villain (which I honestly just wanted to use since the [[album:beyond-canon]] album has some banger tunes that I don't think have been featured in the fanmusic scene).

    Who doesn't love a character who copes with her problems by murdering on camera. I really like how the art focuses on her two-faced personality and and thought it would be fun to cut back and forth between different moods/tones, as if Ardata were putting on different personas for her viewers.
