tried fucking with a few time signatures but landed on basic ass 4/4. got that mission impossible-ish bass, though its kinda similar to some other vriska themes?
currently got a kinda stand in drum rhythm, just a In Built Groove in my plugin.
but! i think ive gotten a good enough vibe for the main guitar part. i dont have access to the guitar soundfont used in tracks like [[track:killed-by-br8k-spider|killed by br8k spider]] or what have you, but that kinda long vibrato-y guitar ive got a hand on. im also quoting [[track:killed-by-br8k-spider|killed by br8k spider]]'s melody a bitty. yay !
i also have power chord guitar. might replace this with some synths or chiptune ass stuff. iunno ! 2025/05/24 i replaced the chords with some synth stuff, and arpeggiated it in the next section. redid the drums, and did fun Tom Stuff in section two!
section two also has excerpts from [[track:superego|superego]], as well as a second guitar doin' some [[track:spiders-claw|spider's claw]]! having fun mashing these things together.
section three: pulling back all da instruments same for the kit and bass, because its time for a bass solo. for the most part it is just what Sounds Cool, and then that bit of [[track:spiders-claw|spider's claw]] again.
at this point it feels like im almost dropping the mission impossible type of thing and its just back at Vriska Shit. thats fine ! im having a great time with this. its da process baybee 2025/05/25 i need to stop umming and ahhing over the idea that "every character needs an instrument" but im thinking about like... here vriska is the guitar. clear and in the front and shit. but hand off the bass to vrissy maybe? during the jail break its about testing her skills and stuff. vriska can just Break Out, but it's vrissy's test.

couldnt figure out what i wanted to do, where to go with an album so... just decided to start reading. i havent gotten back to reading hs:bc since the hscu took over it, so i thought i'd read, catch up, get some ideas.
theres a scene early on (around page 108) where kanaya and dave just. sit down and talk a bit. talk about feelings?
something resonated with this scene and me. this was a thing to write for, i guess. from memory (which is admittedly pretty spotty) kanaya's themes are sort of piano-y, based higher in the register. usually a bit dense, notes wise? i dont know if what im trying to say is coming across but ive written a part for her which is less that. more open and sparse. rose "left" her and shes... mourning? again, im bad with words. she thinks about her a lot.
dave's part is pretty clear in the percussion. the whole piece is drowning in reverb and echoes, which fits the emotions flying from the two. dave's lost a lot of his friends, but still has some family.
the string part is a piece of rose, but in this case its meant to be calling back to instrumentation in [[track:upward-movement-dave-owns|dave owns]].
as of the current date i have some horns in there (karkat representation) but im probably going to remove it. it makes this thing more agressive sounding, but a. thats not the vibe i really need in this track, and b. hes elsewhere.
i dunno man. 2025/05/26 i added a bassline with like. sega genesis bass stuff and gave it a 'solo' because Here, thats for dave. bit of arpeggio stuff over it in the piano. did this a few days ago and forgot to write here that i did it. oops.
i should probably put like actual motifs from either of their themes in here but i cant really figure out how. over the bass solo thing i put the [[track:upward-movement-dave-owns|upward movement]] drum line in at least.
actually figured out how to do it. its a small segment, but in the piano im adding a teeny bit of [[track:darling-kanaya|darling kanaya]], the melody movement at like 15 seconds in.
i felt Bad having a dave motif but being unable to put a kanaya thing in when its equally her song as well. glad i fixed that. now this track can be over. being brought to his senses with ghost brain dirk, helping the resistance against jane, up to trying to Blast Her Head Off, and the subsequent [S] 8r8k.
i want to something that shows that oppression/hopelessness he had, and follow that train into becoming one with his aspect again.
to this effect i want to sample songs (or use libraries that are somewhat harsh and sound like they could be sampling) to build the start, something gritty and basically [[artist:nine-inch-nails|nine inch nails]] like, but grow it out into a big blossoming orchestra.
we'll see what happens. [later] fucking around with something, but its messy. maybe too agressive and not oppressed? dunno as of yet, but i have infinite time to play with it.

title change is like. the original title is not something that is said in the comic (probably) and is just there because it contains the word hope, which is The Jake's Thing. kinda chose the title at random before.
while gumption is a word that Jake uses and i think it fits definition wise

the swarminet is such an interesting sound to use. i want to use these swarm instruments more. big thanks to paul koch for making these and putting them up for free, and getting back to me instantly when it down so i could use them. theres something about the like. sudden bits that stick out? like a new clarinet joins the swarm but it starts too loud before it comes back down, or its almost doing a drive by doppler effect style almost. dunno what im talking about, its 11pm and im rambling. anyway. something about ectobiology is so... incomprehensible and scary to me. ive never really gotten the mechanics it. if someone explained it to me maybe i'd uderstand it for a minute but i'd lose it again. its probably my memory being the main issue in that kind of situation but you know!
the work is important for dirk and rose, it has to be done. of course, they're making entirely new species for their future game. along the way they're fucking up and making horrible things and its rough and scary. id imagine deltritus being almost serene and then an abomination that these two have let out after finding it imperfect just comes up and rocks my shit
im trying to justify why this has a kind of scary tone for some of it. that swell in the first section.
i need to make it sound more like its in the cave, in the lab.

after a terezi section, adding a shooort break with more swarminet being scary. dirk influence on the story, changing things back to align with his will, making the harpsichord and pizz strings follow his motif. 2025/06/28 the thing about a track this long is its hard to fucking mix. i get distracted very easily so its hard to sit down and just. Listen To It for the whole runtime!
i added some like. electrical interference sounds and some Bubbling shit for background ambience. theyre in that lab. my favourite hs:bc panel is dirk walking by a ton of server racks. theres cool green Tubes with creature. just thinking more about the implications of how i wrote this again. the pizz strings have their own thing but they mesh into the dirk motif pretty easily. terezi's section is just too bombastic and separate from everything, it would outshine dirk's motif, so he has to grab it and pull it in line. may as well line up the strings at the same time. i know i said this shit last entry but still. elaborating a little bit more
