This is a remix of [[track:beatdown-strider-style|"Beatdown,"]] composed by Curt Blakeslee for Homestuck. I loooove Beatdown. It fills me a fierce, fiery energy every time I hear it. I intended to channel that intensity with this remix here. I rushed it out just in time for 4/13 so it's a little rough around the edges, but like all of my music, it is my child, and so I still love it dearly. Hope you enjoy.

Raid: ([extended description](https://pastebin.com/GaFE0ekU))
On this date 12 years ago, a stupid webcomic that's far too long and weird and hilarious and all sorts of fucked up went online. Of course, I'm talking about Homestuck. It crashed [[flash:4109|Newgrounds]],. broke metafictional barriers, ruined a lot of lives (not mine, miss me with that shit), and caused a big ruckus in its heyday. But I was along for the ride as a young tween/teen, and I quite enjoyed it.

Some of the tunes from the webcomic's discography remain among my favorite tracks of all time because they evoke emotionally-rich memories of the past. [[track:beatdown-strider-style|Beatdown]] by Curt Blakeslee is one of those tunes. I still remember being 12 years old, coming home from school and throwing all my homework aside to read Homestuck for hours, skipping every single pesterlog like a dumb little kid, just trying as hard as I could to blast through the thousands of pages that were out already and catch up to the comic's present. I think I caught up around the time when Andrew Hussie put the comic on pause for a long time. I don't remember exactly, though.

The sound design (can I even call it that?) in this track took for fucking ever. I stole a couple of cool sound effects from familiar sources. That snap and filter sweep you keep hearing? That's Roy Mustang's flame alchemy. That blip-blip-blip? That's Falco's shine, of course. That high-pitched ding that I played layered with the snare in the middle? That's a sound effect from Danganronpa. I think it's the sound effect that plays when something surprising happens and some dialogue appears. The sword slashes and cuts are also from DR. The first game. Aside from that, we've got a whole bunch of presets, a whole lot of sounds I designed myself by screwing around in Ableton with plugins and effects, a bunch of free samples I downloaded off sketchy sites, a shit ton of meticulously drawn automation curves, and my very own Yamaha upright piano. I played all the piano in this track with my own two hands. That was hard. My right wrist still hurts from furiously playing that super verby high-register ostinato that comes in after 2:57. I think I nailed it, but you can be the judge of that.

Anything else I got to say? No, not really. Well, I hate school, as always. School is a bitch. Music is keeping me sane, I guess. I'm really glad I got this track out for 4/13. I almost missed it.

This is a remix of [[track:doctor|"Doctor,"]] composed by George Buzinkai for Homestuck. Doctor is possibly my favorite Homestuck track of all time and I wanted to pay my respects by producing a remix. This is the first proper EDM track I've done, with a legit structure, motivic development, section transitions, and all that. I did a ton of Googling how to use Ableton plugins and effects and instruments to make this track. I'm not usually very proud of my own work, but I really like this remix. I put a great amount of effort into it. I hope you like it too!

2022 Jan 23 Update: Go [check this track out on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/track/1Bd2MvE4CT5FHVVtY06wmW)!

Another year, another 10/25. I made a harsh, mean, bass-heavy remix of my favorite piece a' Homestuck music. I like how it turned out. Even did a cheap little visualizer video with changing colors and shit, kinda like those old independent EDM channels on YouTube used to do.

This is the first complete track I've ever produced, with a beginning, middle, and end! Big milestone for me as a producer. I still have light-years to go, though. There's much improvement for me to be had. You ain't seen shit yet.

Been working on this thing on and off since August. Somehow managed to wrap it up in a "timely" fashion, despite school absolutely kicking my ass for the past few weeks. Organic chemistry is a bitch, you know that? Man. School sucks.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Did you notice that the track is 6 minutes and 12 seconds long? Lol. I had to pack the ending piano solo in a little more tightly than I'd wanted to in order to fit within that time limit. But it worked out!

Credit for the image used in the visualizer goes to [[artist:andrew-hussie]]. As far as I know, he made all the original art for the planets and pretty much everything else before Act 6, before he started bringing other artists and animators on to collaborate. So this .gif of Land of Wind and Shade on fire must be his doing.

This is some breakcore, drum 'n' bass, glitch stuff, with some of my own organic acoustic live drums, piano, and electric guitar playing mixed in. Yeah, that's right! You're hearing a real electric guitar in this track. I went and bought my first axe. I still barely know how to wield this thing but I'm super excited to continue learning how.

4/13 again. I flew across the country to visit my family, and I value every second I get to spend with them, so I'm rushing all this together. Hopefully you couldn't tell. I'm releasing the video at midnight in Pacific Time because it's already past midnight here on the east coast. Hahaha. It wouldn't have mattered either way. I'm scheduling the video this way just cause I felt like it.

It's been a while since I've produced an EDM track like this one. The last time I did this was... actually exactly two years ago! That was when I made my remix of [[track:beatdown-raid-remix|Beatdown]], which has since become the most popular track I've released. I remember rushing to complete that one on time for April 13th. Well, I guess nothingfs changed, because I rushed to complete this one, too.

I've loved electronic music ever since I was a kid, but I haven't really been flexing my electronic music production skills ("production skills") lately. I've been doing a lot of acoustic live shit and playing my instruments because I've been on a jazz and rock kick ever since last spring/summer. Making electronic music again is refreshing. Electronic is the vibe of most stuff the Homestuck music team has made so I guess I'm in good company as I return to making more EDM.

I took a page out of a few dope musicians' books to make this track. I was thinking of [[Carne Vale]] by [[artist:malcolm-brown|Malcolm Brown]] when I panned the drums around. [Too Many Fucking Stairs by Enduser](https://adnoiseam.bandcamp.com/track/too-many-fucking-stairs) gave me the idea to make anything breakcore-like and provided me with some rhythmic ideas for my drum solo. Listening to most of KOAN Sound's shit got me to pay more attention to my bassline and kick rhythms. Oh, and [[Bec Noir]] by [[artist:will-kommor|Will Kommor]]! That's a Homestuck tune that also made me think of making something with glitchy breakcore drums. I think that tune and the one by Enduser were my two foremost inspirations for this remix.

You know, I really didn't expect my new guitar to sound this good. It's the first electric guitar I've ever owned. It's a Gibson Les Paul and it sounds glorious. I can't wait to go home and practice on it. I still need to really figure out my effects and stuff for it, iron out all the kinks, buy a better amp, learn the fretboard, develop better hand dexterity... so much to learn, so much to do......

Kinda went nuts for this drum solo. The reason you don't hear any 1st tom in it is because I broke it, like I mentioned. I must've hit it at a weird angle, or hit it too hard, or hit the head on a weak spot, or all of the above. Oh well. That tom head had served me well for almost a decade.

[[Flare]] has long been one of my favorite HS tunes. The [[track:flare-cascade-cut|Cascade cut]], especially. Ever since I watched [[flash:4109|[S] Cascade]] for the first time when I was like 13. Hearing the music speed up and get more chaotic towards the end was super cool. Jeez. It's really been almost ten years since then. Anyway, while listening to this remix, just close your eyes and imagine you're in space, or something. Especially during the beginning and end. I wonder what the "Flare" is that Clark Powell was referring to. Like a solar flare, maybe? I dunno.

Happy 4/13. Homestuck is getting old. I'm getting old, too. I will graduate from college and turn 22 this year. But my love of music, especially of music from Homestuck, will never get old. So here's a fun little remix of Toby Fox's "Moonsetter." Copious amounts of virtual distorted electric guitar, jazz piano, and intense rock drumming included. Enjoy.

Why'd I call it Moonslayer? Well, I was looking for a cool edgy yet catchy little name to title this track while riffing off the Homestuck Music Team's theme of titling tracks Moon/Sun + word that starts with S. Moonsetter is the name of the original track. [[Moonshatter]] and [[Sunsetter]] are the names of a couple of Toby Fox's other Homestuck music contributions. [[Moonsweater]] is the name of a track on [[album:homestuck-vol-10|Homestuck Volume 10]] by [[artist:david-ellis|A Lunatic's Daydream]]. So you see what I mean. I considered Moonslammer, like [[Sunslammer]] by [[artist:seth-peelle|Beatfox]], but that wasn't edgy enough for me. So I settled on Moonslayer. Yeah. "Moonslayer" brings up catastrophic, apocalyptic images of destroying the moon, but not just destroying the moon-slaying it, as though the moon were a living entity capable of being conquered. A spirit. A god or goddess, maybe. A constant observer of mankind. Something personified, and then killed. Very edgy. Absolutely perfect.

Woooooo! 10/25 music video! At some point I'm going to need to stop doing these because I'm going to run out of Homestuck music to cover/remix/interpolate, but that point, if it ever came, would be very far off in the distant future. I love doing these and there is still so much good Homestuck music out there. I'll probably stop doing these before I get to that point simply because I become too busy with life stuff, or because the YouTube algorithm craters me for no reason, or for a whole host of other possible reasons.

I suffered a shoulder injury in late September and was afraid I wasn't going to be able to record the drums for this tune, but I very fortunately healed in time to drum my heart out on this track.

Unfortunately, I have started browsing Twitter more frequently these past few months. I see some disgusting stuff on that app. Anyway, [[artist:james-roach|James Roach]] tweeted something about there maybe being an announcement today. Hmm...

Last but not least, what's with the title? I wanted to stick with the double "u" alliteration that [[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox]] did with the title of the original tune [[Umbral Ultimatum]]. A lot of titles of Homestuck tunes are alliterative. I wanted two "U" words. I landed on universal umbrosity, which sounded cool to me. What is universal umbrosity? Well, umbrosity, according to [Wiktionary](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/umbrosity), is an obsolete noun which means "The quality of state of being umbrose; shadiness." So when I say universal umbrosity, I picture an omnipresent, inescapable, all-encompassing sense of terror, darkness, blackness, and silence. Like drowning in a pool of ink. It's too thick to swim out of and too opaque to get your bearings in. Nobody can hear you scream as you slip further into the depths, ever closer to your doom.

I hope your day is going great!

Extra note post-Spotify upload: I mixed the Spotify version of this track to be quieter than the version that wound up in the music video because [[artist:makin]], the manager of the Homestuck Community Discord, left a comment saying it got too loud at certain points. And they were right! I went and checked the volume of the track with a loudness meter plugin and it was peaking and clipping all over the place. Turns out my other recent streaming platform uploads, like [[track:moonslayer]] and [[track:black-raid-remix|Black]], also peak hella loud too. Oops. I should've paid more attention to their final volumes. But from now on, for all the tracks that I upload, I will make them a lot quieter so they don't clip and get distorted and give listeners hearing loss. I'm making a change.
