Toby Fox: ("THE MAKING OF RADIATION'S HALLOWEEN HACK", excerpt)

also, the last boss music was a little inspired by [[track:gadobadorrer|brandish 2's]], see if you can catch the similarities

Toby Fox: (["LIVE A LIVE: a conversation between Yoko Shimomura and Toby Fox"](https://www.square-enix-games.com/en_US/news/live-a-live-yoko-shimomura-toby-fox-pt-1), excerpts)

So, let me explain… First of all, I was 15 years old, okay? I was working on a project, and I actually just wanted to use [[MEGALOMANIA]] in it...

However, In order to do that, I would have to remake it. And so after a few minutes of trying to transcribe it, I thought "this is too hard, wouldn't it be easier to just make a new track?" So I tried to do so, inspired by MEGALOMANIA and [[track:gadobadorrer|another song]].

As for why it's called "MEGALOVANIA", the theme of the project was Halloween, so I thought adding "VANIA" so the end made sense… Transylvania = Vampire = Halloween... was my chain of thoughts.

If I can talk about what makes MEGALOMANIA great for a second… Obviously the song itself is really cool, but the "secret sauce" that makes it really stand out isn't just the composition, it's the context within which it's used in the game. Because it always played at the end of the chapter, the player starts to get an almost Pavlovian-style response to it. No matter whether you're in a prehistoric world, the future, or ancient China, as soon as that track plays, your brain fully activates with "This is it... this is... the end...".

Anyway, 15-year-old me wanted a track that also gave that feeling for my own project. Hence, the similar name... Or something. [...]

[When] I had to listen to it again to remake it for UNDERTALE, it was a bit… Actually, I didn't really feel embarrassed at all. My younger self was trying his best! [...]

Supposing I ever had to write a piece that would go "even further beyond"... Personally, I do not think I would use the name "GIGALOVANIA".

Megalovania wasn't intended to be anybody's anything but if people want to perceive it as Vriska's theme it's fine. I just figured that if the trolls had chapters to themselves a la Live-A-Live, it might be the chapter boss theme.

Namewise yes, it is a direct reference to [[MEGALOMANIA]] from Live A Live. I've seen a few people pick up on that because that's cool. The chords are kind of similar but I wouldn't say it's a huge inspiration for the COMPOSITION of the song itself but it's TOTALLY attempting to be the kind of a badass song that might be suitable for a similar purpose.

A little more in-depth: I originally made it for that [[album:earthbound-halloween-hack|Halloween EarthBound hack]] forever ago (and by forever ago I mean "back in high school") and people were ripping the song themselves from the game. I felt like maybe I should do a semi-official release ripped straight from the music editor program (the song actually lags in-game). I realized the song didn't have a name, so I took the inspiration for the track and the whole idea of the final battle (Megalomania) and just slammed some Halloweeniness into it (transylVANIA) and boom Megalovania.

Theeeen by Album 6 there were 3 different versions of the songs so I threw weird capitals into it.

Also as long as I'm talking about the track, I've heard some people complain about the new guitar recordings versus the supervibrato crazy fakeguitars I usually use.* If the recordings sound bad, it's basically because I didn't alter the original crazy parts to make them playable, plus all of my written parts were REALLY stretching the area that a guitar can play without sounding screechy and stupid (this was aided by the fact that [[artist:tensei]]'s guitar goes a whole note higher than most guitars can). I think I just made it so it was badass enough to make up for the fact that I kinda messed that up (the track sounds good to me and Tensei, so whatever). I tried alternatives, but the fakeguitars sounded muddy when I tested them down an octave (because of the original SNES track in the background was already occupying that space, and the SNES track is essentially uneditable - which, again, resulted in me writing a pretty uncreative solo section with the same chords complete with fade lolololol)

So, that was a learning experience for me! Next time I'll start the piece off with non-screechy parts that are physically possible to play, and... also I won't have an SNES track in the background (I kinda felt that was the purpose of the song SO I JUST COULDNT TAKE IT OUT) so the parts won't have to be in the upper octave and be screechy and the chords won't be the same... so I'll be able to actually... compose a real B section.

That being said... I'm still pretty damn happy with it as a first try, especially given the whole Super Nintendo thing.

*People complain about literally everything but I feel like this is at least kinda a legit complaint.

Also, upon loading, this Flash cues up the song "Megalovania" by Toby Fox, which, you know, at the time was no big deal. Just another cool song from the greater discography dropped into one of these animations. But then years later he [[track:megalovania-undertale|used it again]] in *Undertale,* thus somewhat rebranding the public's association with it. Does that mean it's fair to say it's more of an *Undertale* song than a *Homestuck* song now? This question, of course, is completely ridiculous, since the answer is: it's neither. It still is, always has been, and always will be, a Vriska song.
