This song is featured in Land of Fans and Music 5 Act 2. [[album:lofam5a2|Listen to the full album here.]]

I like to think that this song captures the overall vibe of a Sburb session, and the journey of its players reaching toward the goal of creating a new universe while ascending to the god tiers. Not super dark or gritty, but not a easy breeze in the park either. The Adventurous Ascent through Sburb mirrors the ascent through life itself, and the many challenges it brings. This track was originally going to be on an upcoming album for my fanadventure (and it'll probably still be on there despite also being on LOFAM); when I saw submissions open for LOFAM 5.2, I decided to submit some tracks, and Adventurous Ascent was the one that got approved. This is my first track to appear on a LOFAM album, and I'm very happy to see that it made it on!

On reading that the track is about progression through a SBURB session, I pictured all 4 beta kids in a sort of staircase composition, each representing a phase in their session's timeline.

This is a remix of [[track:beatdown-strider-style|"Beatdown,"]] composed by [[artist:curt-blakeslee]] for Homestuck. I loooove Beatdown. It fills me a fierce, fiery energy every time I hear it. I intended to channel that intensity with this remix here. I rushed it out just in time for 4/13 so it's a little rough around the edges, but like all of my music, it is my child, and so I still love it dearly. Hope you enjoy.

- On this date 12 years ago, a stupid webcomic that's far too long and weird and hilarious and all sorts of fucked up went online. Of course, I'm talking about Homestuck. It crashed [[flash:4109|Newgrounds]], broke metafictional barriers, ruined a lot of lives (not mine, miss me with that shit), and caused a big ruckus in its heyday. But I was along for the ride as a young tween/teen, and I quite enjoyed it.

+ I almost forgot that it was April 13th. Still though. I must pay my respects to Homestuck, on this 13th of April in the year two thousand and twenty one, with a piece of hard work as tribute. I don't make the rules. I just observe them.
+
+ I really rushed this one out. It's my fault; I lost track of time. I did the intro and buildup (everything up until the 1:11 mark) over the course of several months, then lost my shit when I noticed it was April 11th and did EVERYTHING ELSE AFTER THAT over the span of eighteen hours. I would've liked to spend more time adjusting levels, doing a proper mixdown, and polishing up the many rough patches, but like I said, I lost track of time. Regardless, I'm pretty proud of how the track turned out. It feels like it could be a boss battle theme for a Homestuck video game. This is what plays when you, Dave, ascend to the rooftop and get your ass kicked by your older brother, or something like that.
+
+ Credit for the .gif goes to [[artist:andrew-hussie]], as always. I ripped it straight from one of Homestuck's earlier pages. I'm sure nobody will mind.
+
+ By the way, doing these music uploads on Homestuck meme dates has made the relentless passage of time very apparent to me. My older sis introduced me to Homestuck when I was 12. TWELVE. I was a tiny fucking baby. Then I uploaded my first Homestuck piano video to YouTube when I was in high school, at age 16. Now it's 2021. I'm going to turn 21 this summer. How crazy is that? I should get a job or something
+

Some of the tunes from the webcomic's discography remain among my favorite tracks of all time because they evoke emotionally-rich memories of the past. [[track:beatdown-strider-style|Beatdown]] by [[artist:curt-blakeslee]] is one of those tunes. I still remember being 12 years old, coming home from school and throwing all my homework aside to read Homestuck for hours, skipping every single pesterlog like a dumb little kid, just trying as hard as I could to blast through the thousands of pages that were out already and catch up to the comic's present. I think I caught up around the time when Andrew Hussie put the comic on pause for a long time. I don't remember exactly, though.

Extended description for Black remix/cover/don't know what to call it

I spent an entire evening a few weeks back rereading Act 5 Act 2. Knocked it out within several hours. My goodness. Homestuck is still such an amazing story. Nothing I've ever watched or read or heard even comes close to delivering the amount of narrative-payoff-induced-catharsis that [[flash:4109|[S] Cascade]] brings. Homestuck stays goated.

[[Black]] is a Homestuck tune I really like. It's so chaotic and frenzied. Whenever I hear it, I get a sense of urgency or imminent danger. I've been hoping to cover it for a while, but I was a bit hesitant because I thought I'd fuck up the piano and synth parts because they're so fast. They sound more or less OK here, I think. I used some audio editing magic to make them sound less terrible. Only a little bit of magic involved, though. Not too much. I want to keep it human.

- Before doing this arrangement, I'd always made sure to avoid using the virtual instrument voice presets that came with my keyboard, like the tenor sax voice I used here. I thought they sounded tacky and strange. But I made an exception for this track because [[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox's]] original version uses a virtual sax and it still sounds great. So I thought I'd imitate him here. And maybe stop being so dismissive of virtual instruments, even if they sound hella fake. The fakeness of the sound does imbue the music with a certain distinctive character, however. I suppose that's something some people might desire and intentionally aim for. This video-gamey, low-fidelity, scrappy kind of character. It does sound good at times.

I was pretty ambitious with this track. Throwing together a ton of parts, altering the track structure to add my own percussion break and solo section, doing a one-man drumline thing with the percussion break, playing a damn virtual guitar on my keyboard. Well. If you thought this was a lot of experimentation for a single video, brace yourself. I got something else coming soon. Get ready.

I've loved electronic music ever since I was a kid, but I haven't really been flexing my electronic music production skills ("production skills") lately. I've been doing a lot of acoustic live shit and playing my instruments because I've been on a jazz and rock kick ever since last spring/summer. Making electronic music again is refreshing. Electronic is the vibe of most stuff the Homestuck music team has made so I guess I'm in good company as I return to making more EDM.

- I took a page out of a few dope musicians' books to make this track. I was thinking of [[Carne Vale]] by [[artist:malcolm-brown|Malcolm Brown]] when I panned the drums around. [Too Many Fucking Stairs by Enduser](https://adnoiseam.bandcamp.com/track/too-many-fucking-stairs) gave me the idea to make anything breakcore-like and provided me with some rhythmic ideas for my drum solo. Listening to most of KOAN Sound's shit got me to pay more attention to my bassline and kick rhythms. Oh, and [[Bec Noir]] by [[artist:will-kommor|Will Kommor]]! That's a Homestuck tune that also made me think of making something with glitchy breakcore drums. I think that tune and the one by Enduser were my two foremost inspirations for this remix.

I can't wait to go home and practice on it. I still need to really figure out my effects and stuff for it, iron out all the kinks, buy a better amp, learn the fretboard, develop better hand dexterity... so much to learn, so much to do......

It's April 13!!!! Here's the Homestuck tune you were promised. I present to you Out of Breath, a tune I worked pretty hard on. It's got real electric guitars, a little chiptune intro, some intense drumming, a lot of quoted material from songs I like, and an 80-bar piano solo. There's a LOT of piano in this tune. It's very piano-centric, for reasons apparent to anyone who's ever read the comic.

Yo! Update time. I've finally begun listening to my old Homestuck tracks and polishing the mixes to get them ready for <i>I Warned You About Stairs</i>. I've got some preliminary mixes done. And lemme tell ya, they sound so much better now that I actually somewhat understand what I'm doing. I released the first versions of these tunes years ago. Some I released as far back as 2020 or 2021. And back then I didn't know a damn thing about mixing. I was just recording myself playing the instruments and then smushing all the tracks together and exporting the whole mess and calling it a day. It's not like I'm a mixing gneius now, either, but at least now I know how to work a highpass filter (at the very least!). And I understand the basic principles of mixing multitrack recordings. So expect the remastered versions of these tunes that will appear on the album to sound a lot better, a lot clearer, a lot smoother.

- So. "Out of Breath". It's a tune about [[flash:3696|that one time John got stabbed through the chest by Bec Noir and died.]] He came back to life soon after, but for a brief moment, he was... Out of Breath. <i>cue uproarious applause</i>

This tune was a lot of fun to make. It took me forever, and so much blood and sweat and tears was shed. But I'm proud of the end result. A lot of stuff went wrong because I tried to expand my horizons. You know how it is. I'm always wanting to try something new, and grow, and learn, and all that jazz. And that usually results in me making a lot of mistakes and getting a lot of stuff wrong and learning from the experience. I've never incorporated electric guitars into a tune this extensively, for one. Mostly because I only recently learned to play electric guitar at all. Recording guitars is hard in ways I wasn't prepared for. Fret buzz, string noise, feedback, amp hum, improper muting... ugh. Guitar is hard. Mixing is hard too. Music in general is hard!

Now let's talk about the future, about the other upcoming tracks, and about the album's release. As is the case with most things in my life... I didn't really plan this out. I just kinda announced that I would be compiling all my old Homestuck music, applying a fresh coat of paint, remastering it all, and composing a couple new tunes, and then wrapping all of it up into a nice neat little package and releasing it as an album. My first ever "real" album, I guess. I think I will shoot for a release date of 10/25. Because what other date would I possibly pick? Plus I've got to give myself time to get everything ready. I still need to figure a lot of stuff out. I'd rather give myself more time and get everything right, and not rush it and mess it all up.

- On 6/12 I will release the next of my newly composed tunes. This is the tune that a lot of people seemed to get excited for. It was the tune that played during the announcement/teaser video that hyped people up! What's it called? What kind of tune is it? What does the whole track sound like? I played this one to a 150 BPM click. Sometimes I like doing that and sometimes I don't. I usually prefer to play freely, without a click, which makes playing feel better in some ways and worse in others. It definitely helped around 0:18, when I just started spamming notes on the snare, floor tom, and bass drum as fast as I could, knowing I could easily hop back on beat because I had a click in my ear. That's something that's a lot harder to do well without a click. I dunno if I could do it well without a click.

-    And all these J-rock quotes! It's now very clear how much J-rock has been influencing me lately. -    I just dropped On Still Wings, the final new track on I Warned You About Stairs. I've wanted to make a track like this for a while. Tough, angry, villainous, and a little ominous. I really like how it turned out, especially considering that I jumped into recording the instrumental parts with only a half-baked idea of how I wanted the tune to go, and composed and arranged most of it as I went along &#1F635;. That's not actually a good idea, by the way. You should have your shit planned out before you get to recording. Don't do what I did &#1F635; &#1F635; &#1F635;

I'd wanted to make a tune like this for a while, and I was 90% there, but what really gave me that last 10% of motivation and pushed me over the edge was when a friend introduced me to an album called ["Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven"](https://godspeedyoublackemperor.bandcamp.com/album/lift-your-skinny-fists-like-antennas-to-heaven) by a group called Godspeed You! Black Emperor. There's only 4 tracks on it, but the tracks are long, dark, atmospheric, moody, and god they sound cool. I was especially blown away by the buildup to around 16:00 on track #2, titled ["Static."](https://godspeedyoublackemperor.bandcamp.com/track/static) The sense of urgency, the gradual acceleration, the harsh timbres of the instruments.. all colliding and crashing, washing over me like waves against a cliffside. Shit blew my mind. After hearing that album I thought "alright, it's go time" and got down to business.

"Moonslayer" brings up catastrophic, apocalyptic images of destroying the moon, but not just destroying the moon—slaying it, as though the moon were a living entity capable of being conquered. A spirit. A god or goddess, maybe. A constant observer of mankind. Something personified, and then killed. Very edgy. Absolutely perfect.

Woooooo! 10/25 music video! At some point I'm going to need to stop doing these because I'm going to run out of Homestuck music to cover/remix/interpolate, but that point, if it ever came, would be very far off in the distant future. I love doing these and there is still so much good Homestuck music out there. I'll probably stop doing these before I get to that point simply because I become too busy with life stuff, or because the YouTube algorithm craters me for no reason, or for a whole host of other possible reasons.

I suffered a shoulder injury in late September and was afraid I wasn't going to be able to record the drums for this tune, but I very fortunately healed in time to drum my heart out on this track.

Unfortunately, I have started browsing Twitter more frequently these past few months. I see some disgusting stuff on that app. Anyway, [[artist:james-roach|James Roach]] tweeted something about there maybe being an announcement today. Hmm...

- Last but not least, what's with the title? I wanted to stick with the double "u" alliteration that [[artist:toby-fox|Toby Fox]] did with the title of the original tune [[Umbral Ultimatum]]. A lot of titles of Homestuck tunes are alliterative. I wanted two "U" words. I landed on universal umbrosity, which sounded cool to me. What is universal umbrosity? Well, umbrosity, according to [Wiktionary](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/umbrosity), is an obsolete noun which means "The quality of state of being umbrose; shadiness." So when I say universal umbrosity, I picture an omnipresent, inescapable, all-encompassing sense of terror, darkness, blackness, and silence. Like drowning in a pool of ink. It's too thick to swim out of and too opaque to get your bearings in. Nobody can hear you scream as you slip further into the depths, ever closer to your doom.
