Hanks plays a FedEx employee stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes in the South Pacific, and the film depicts his desperate attempts to survive. The film was released on December 22, 2000. It grossed $429 million worldwide, with Hanks nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 73rd Academy Awards.[2]Contents1 Plot2 Cast3 Production3.1 Development3.2 Filming3.3 Music3.4 FedEx3.5 Wilson the volleyball4 Reception4.1 Accolades5 In popular culture6 References7 External linksPlotIn 1995, Chuck Noland,a time-obsessed systems analyst, travels the world resolving productivity problems at FedEx depots. He is in a long-term relationship with Kelly Frears, with whom he lives in Memphis, Tennessee. Chuck's busy schedule often interferes with their relationship.During the family Christmas dinner, Chuck is summoned to resolve a work problem in Malaysia. Flying through a violent storm, his FedEx cargo plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Chuck escapes with an inflatable life raft, though the raft's emergency locator transmitter is ripped off. The next day, Chuck, clinging to the damaged raft, washes up on an uncharted and uninhabited island.Several FedEx packages from the crashed plane also wash up on the shore, as well as the corpse of one the flight crew, whom Chuck buries. He tries to signal a passing ship and makes an unsuccessful launch attempt with the remnants of his life raft, but the incoming surf is too strong and he injures his leg on a coral reef. He finds food, water, and shelter; he eventually opens the packages, finding a number of potentially useful items. He leaves one package, with a pair of wings painted on it, unopened. While attempting to build a fire, Chuck cuts his hand. In anger he throws several objects from one of the packages, including a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball, leaving a bloody hand print on it. He then draws a face into the smeared blood, and names the ball, Wilson. He regularly talks to Wilson.Over four years, Chuck survives and has since taken shelter inside a cave. Wilson is his only companion. After a large section from a portable toilet washes up on the island, Chuck decides to build a raft, using the metal sheeting as the sail. He successfully launches the raft that he has stocked with food, water, and the one unopened FedEx package. After some time on the ocean, a storm damages his raft. The following day, Wilson falls off the raft and is lost, devastating Chuck. Soon after, a passing cargo ship spots the barely alive, Chuck.Upon returning to civilization, Chuck learns that he was given up for dead and his family and friends held a funeral; Kelly has since married and has a child. After reuniting with Kelly, the pair profess their love for each other but knowing Kelly cannot abandon her family, they part. Kelly gives Chuck the keys to the car they once shared.Chuck drives to Texas to return the unopened FedEx package to its intended recipient. Arriving at the address, he finds no one is home, so he leaves the package at the door with a note saying that the package saved his life. He departs and stops at a remote crossroads. A pretty young woman in a pickup truck stops and gives information about where each road leads. As she drives away, Chuck notices the wing graphic painted on her truck is similar to the one on the parcel. He looks down each road, then at the one the woman took, and smiles.CastTom Hanks as Chuck NolandHelen Hunt as Kelly FrearsNick Searcy as Stan, a friend of ChuckChris Noth as Jerry Lovett, Kelly's husbandLari White as Bettina Peterson, the woman who sent the unopened FedEx packageVince Martin as Pilot Al, who is buried by Chuck on the islandMichael Forest as Pilot JackJay Acovone as Pilot PeterProductionDevelopmentIn a 2017 Actor Roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Hanks stated[3]I made Cast Away because I wanted to examine the concept of four years of hopelessness, in which you have none of the requirements for living — food, water, shelter, fire and company. But it took us six years to put together the alliance that would actually examine that. I only had a third of it, and Bill Broyles only had a third of it, until Bob Zemeckis comes along and provided that other third. I had that original idea. I was reading an article about FedEx, and I realized that 747s filled with packages fly across the Pacific three times a day. And I just thought, "What happens if that goes down?"— Tom Hanks in 2017[3]FilmingThe island of MonurikiThe film's shooting occurred between 1998 and 2000, but was not shot consecutively. Hanks gained 50 pounds (23 kg) during pre-production, for the purpose of making his transformation more dramatic. After a majority of the film was shot, production was halted for a year so that he could lose the weight and grow his hair and beard to look like he had been living on the island for years. Another four-month production halt preceded the filming of the final return scenes. During the year-long hiatus, Zemeckis used the same film crew to make another film, What Lies Beneath.[2]Cast Away was filmed on Monuriki, one of the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji.[4] It is in a subgroup of the Mamanuca archipelago, which is sited off the coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island. The island became a tourist attraction following the film's release. After Chuck's return, it is identified by Kelly as being "about 600 miles [970 km] south of the Cook Islands," but there is actually no land between the southernmost Cook Islands of Mangaia and Antarctica. The film essentially begins and ends in the same location, on the Arrington Ranch in the Texas Panhandle south of the city of Canadian, Texas.[5]MusicThe film's minimal score was composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri for which he won a Grammy Award in 2002. The film's soundtrack is most notable for its lack of score and creature sound effects (such as bird song or insect sounds) while Chuck is on the island, which is intended to reinforce the feeling of isolation.[6] Cast Away contains no original musical score until Chuck escapes the island. However, there is a Russian choral piece heard near the start of the film that was not composed or even recorded by Silvestri, so it does not appear on the film's soundtrack list. It is a traditional Russian song written by Lev Knipper called "Oh, My Field" ("Polyushko, Polye") and it is available on various collections of Red Army hymns. The official soundtrack CD is an anthology of musical pieces from all films up to that point directed by Zemeckis and scored by Silvestri. The only track from Cast Away itself is the theme from the end credits.[7]FedExFedEx provided access to their facilities (Memphis, Los Angeles, and Moscow) as well as airplanes, trucks, uniforms, and logistical support. A team of FedEx marketers oversaw production through more than two years of filming.[8] FedEx CEO Fred Smith made an appearance as himself for the scene where Chuck is welcomed back, which was filmed on location at FedEx's home facilities in Memphis, Tennessee. The idea of a story based on a FedEx plane crashing gave the company "a heart attack at first," but the overall story was seen as positive. FedEx, which paid no money for product placement in the film,[9] saw an increase in brand awareness in Asia and Europe following the film's release.[10]Wilson the volleyballWilson the volleyballIn the film, Wilson the volleyball serves as Chuck Noland's personified friend and only companion during the four years that Noland spends alone on a deserted island.[11][12][13] Named after the volleyball's manufacturer, Wilson Sporting Goods, the character was created by screenwriter William Broyles Jr. While researching for the film, he consulted with professional survival experts, and then chose to deliberately strand himself for one week on an isolated beach in the Gulf of California, to force himself to search for water and food, and obtain his own shelter. During this time, a volleyball washed up on shore. This was the inspiration for the film's inanimate companion. From a screenwriting point of view, Wilson also serves to realistically allow dialogue in a one-person-only situation.[14][15]One of the original volleyball props was sold at auction for $18,500 to the ex-CEO of FedEx Office, Ken May. At the time of the film's release, Wilson launched its own joint promotion centered on the fact that one of its products was "co-starring" with Tom Hanks. Wilson manufactured a volleyball with a reproduction of the bloodied handprint face on one side. It was sold for a limited time during the film's initial release and continues to be offered on the company's website.[16]ReceptionOn Rotten Tomatoes, Cast Away has an approval rating of 88% based on 156 reviews, with an average rating of 7.36/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Flawed but fascinating, Cast Away offers an intelligent script, some of Robert Zemeckis' most mature directing, and a showcase performance from Tom Hanks."[17] On Metacritic the film has a score of 73 out of 100, based on 32 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]Cast Away opened in 2,774 theaters in North America and grossed $28,883,406 with an average of $10,412 per theater on its opening weekend.[19] For the four-day Christmas long holiday weekend, it took in a total of $39,852,075.[20] The film kept performing well and ended up earning $233,632,142 domestically and $196,000,000 internationally for a total of $429,632,142, well above its production budget of $90 million.[1]AccoladesAward Category Recipients and nominees Result73rd Academy Awards[21] Best Actor Tom Hanks NominatedBest Sound Randy Thom, Tom Johnson, Dennis S. In this version, the woman answers the door, and when Chuck asks what was in the box, the woman replies: "Just a satellite phone, GPS locator, fishing rod, water purifier, and some seeds. Just silly stuff."[26]Media executive Lloyd Braun of ABC Studios first suggested the idea of a Cast Away–type television series at a dinner party in 2003.[27] Thom Sherman later pitched the idea for Cast Away – The Series, but never developed the idea.[27] The concept was later developed and pitched with the title Nowhere, which later turned into the ABC show Lost.[27]References"Cast Away (2000)". in, maybe slow it down or pitch it up or reverse it, and then use that to create new basslines, melodies, and patterns to help maintain the "feel" of this track. + a fair few tracks were started this way very directly, most notably rumblepals and cephalosquad. +--- +Track: Wrigglyville +Duration: 2:13 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/wrigglyville +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/wrigglyville)) + a lot of the time i have no idea what one of my songs is called. sometimes even right after naming it. this is actually kind of a severe problem when you're trying to organize any larger-scale musical project, because it leads to a ton of confusion throughout the process when the only link to what a track sounds like is "the one that goes...like that" in your head. + anyway that's a roundabout way of saying that i have no idea what wrigglyville sounds like and indeed forget that there's a song called this on this album every time without fail until i click on it and hear "the calm happy one with the squeaky fun synth and the bouncy runs" and go "oh" + every + single + time +--- +Track: Cephalosquad +Duration: 2:07 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/cephalosquad +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/cephalosquad)) + this song didn't really come together until niall flippantly said "maybe this is an end credits tune?" and i structured it as such. + turns out, uh, we don't actually have an end credits. or even an ending to speak of . the credits screen just kind of keeps the menu music going over it when you highlight the option for it. but the concept lead to an extensive, super heavy rework and juice-up that gave the song much needed structure and direction it didn't have and it's way better, even if it's just being used as a good ol' background tune these days +--- +Track: Rumblepals +Duration: 2:19 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/rumblepals +--- +Track: Slidesurf +Duration: 2:49 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/slidesurf +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/slidesurf)) + slidesurf would not be here if i didn't fight for it. this was a reject track through and through until i came back to it over a year later and tried to rescue it from the ashes. part of that was that originally, when we were going through the "what the heck is the SOUND for this thing" stages at the beginning, this was the first track niall really liked. + it got vetoed by kieryn way back but i'm glad, now, that it was at the time. the current direction of the music is way tighter and more fitting for a game about racing octopi, honestly. + thankfully, the track was strong enough to stand alone even after months and months of working on progressively better stuff. it deserved its own unique treatment, and the version of slidesurf that ended up making the cut is beefed up significantly. +--- +Track: Octopile +Duration: 3:44 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/octopile +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/octopile)) + spy vibes + this song and dark day for spaghetti child almost didn't make the album, and unlike every other case here, it wasn't for lack of being good! because of deadlines i had to scrap these two because they were just not far enough along to make our release date. + thankfully, as things happen, we ended up having our release pushed back and i had a lot more time to work on these two and get them into the game proper. + there's a lot i like about this track. there's bass stuff that, because i can't help myself, is basically right out of shinobi 3. there's a lot of fun lil melodies and countermelodies that fade out and return. there's a neat epiano that gets chopped and screwed into nothingness at several points. there's record scratches! + scratches! + gotta love record scratches. +--- +Track: Chill Vibe +Duration: 2:50 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/chill-vibe +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/chill-vibe)) + by some metrics, this is the oldest song here. i gotta qualify those metrics, though; obviously DASH!!!!!!!! came earlier, and thrill vibe itself is an older song too; both of those, though, got radical revisions towards the end of development that kind of complicate how "old" they really qualify as. but chill vibe is pretty much exactly how it was since day one. originally this was just the full replacement for thrill vibe; it was The Version, until i decided to split the file into two branches. but while the first branch kept going, chill vibe ended up pretty much complete from the day it was initially started. the only thing i added past the first day of this earliest version of the song is some extra bass work in the middle and the synth riffs near the end. everything else is incredibly dated by the freshness of the other tracks and my "work every day a little bit" approach to them. + it nicely occupies the initialization page, forever providing chill vibes before the thrillier ones take hold. +--- +Track: Welcome to Slamtown +Duration: 2:40 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/welcome-to-slamtown +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/chill-vibe)) + look i'm not gonna mince words here, this is probably the best song here. + welcome to slamtown is so good it actually pisses me off because after i made this i tried desperately to make songs as good as it and a grand total of 0% of the time this works out. + this was the 29th sketch made in the process of working on this album and let me tell you: i was scared, at first, when i put it together. it didn't really sound anything like the tracks that came before it outside of the staccato chords that are sort of muddledash's main musical trick. for a good while i considered not even pitching it for the game and holding onto it for something else, because it didn't square with what i thought muddledash was. + i'm very glad this is a part of this soundtrack. it marks the nice, definitive full-swing start of the second half of the album, and also kind of begat the death of slamtown, which is a personal fave of mine here. +--- +Track: Noodle, Poodled, Bottled, Paddled +Duration: 3:14 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/noodle-poodled-bottled-paddled +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/noodle-poodled-bottled-paddled)) + i think this is niall's favorite song title on the whole album. + this was the most work to make out of all of the songs here. over one hundred hours, several hundred tracks, and, inexplicably, three entirely different DAWs (reason, ableton, AND fl studio) were the source of what you're hearing here. lots of recording and sampling and recording again, many many many stemmed-out production files to compensate for audio latency. + that's partially just an extreme overcompensation for how "meh" the sketch felt to me initially. i really didn't like how it was coming along while still recognizing that, yeah, musically it had something i liked in it. + going overboard has a tendency of solving creative problems. + it's not a healthy solution, though. +--- +Track: Inky Blinky Pinky Clinky +Duration: 2:16 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/inky-blinky-pinky-clinky +--- +Track: blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/dark-day-for-a-spaghetti-child)) + this was the last song done for the album. best part of it for me is the korg m1 piano bridge in the center, which felt really necessary to me because of how utterly, dreadfully 90s this track ended up turning out. seriously, this could have been a reject from an underworld album. + remember underworld? born slippy? you know? the, that song from, the toilet movie. you know the one. + the title of this song is utterly ludicrous and was, i think, the last song title i came up with for the album? whatever, it works. +--- +Track: The Death of Slamtown +Duration: 2:05 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/the-death-of-slamtown +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/the-death-of-slamtown)) + this has dreamcast vibes + i wanted to do another round on the slamtown project file just to mess with it, and slowing it down and really just totally destroying the mix ended up yielding a weird enough vibe that i ran with it. this track is completely brickwalled especially compared to stuff like thrill vibe, which has loads of dynamics. + this is, shocker, intentional! kicking that piano against the limiter gives the track its odd anodyne quality. it's oddly off-putting even as it's a calming tune. the vocal stuff at the end is my personal favorite touch here. +--- +Track: Thrill Vibe +Duration: 3:22 +URLs: +- https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/thrill-vibe +Commentary: |- + rj lake: ([Bandcamp about blurb](https://spellmynamewithabang.bandcamp.com/track/thrill-vibe)) + RECORD SCRATCHES! + this song was the VERY first song made for the game that 1000000% the dev team and me both felt seriously was a hit, was definitely a part of the game. the close inspiration for the vibe of the initial sketch was actually the arcane kids game "perfect stride" and its associated soundtrack (i hate to say "i liked it before it was cool"* but damn if i wasn't a LAGS backer who loved some perfect stride way before sonic dreams collection and the...bubsy thing) but the current mix has gotten away from that pretty significantly, morphing into its own weirdo hip-hop thing. + if there's any indie skateboarding game it feels like it's a part of NOW...it's maybe...olliolli? i could see this playing in the background of olliolli. + the wacked out modulated arp at the end of this is the medusa2 vst, which is a creation of a friend of mine, voidshaper. it's a super excellent lil game boy vst i strongly recommend, and i'm using it here to a very non-game-boy effect. please download it if you make music digitally and check it out! + *that's a lie, i love to say this. this is a warning to all people who want to talk to me in person. i am that guy. +--- +Track: Four Legged Race +Duration: 2:29 +Referenced Tracks: +- DASH!!!!!!!! +URLs: +- muddledash's first trailer was being built by our publisher they went through the soundtrack and said nothing felt really like a "trailer song," which led to this lil guy. + this is genetically from-birth designed to be trailer music for this game, and it turned out good enough i wanted to extend it past the 60 second cutoff the track had to be for the ad and/or ads. it's a bop! + the drop was a production nightmare. a fun one, but a nightmare nonetheless; probably this is my most cpu-intensive project file of all time, with over a hundred generator VSTs making my life hell. rachel had to help me figure out an easier way to sidechain to make this track even a feasible proposition, but i'm glad it's together. + stitching together octopus's garden party and DASH!!!!!!!! works way better than i thought it did. +--- +Track: A Birthday Party Spent With Almost All Your Friends +Duration: 2:38 +URLs: +- for a lot of that time four legged race took this spot at the end of the album proper. but after so very many times listening through my speculative album order playlists and thinking "oh wow this is a great ending track" when it gets to this one, it just seemed natural to switch them around. + i don't even know what to say about this track. it came together very quickly and i don't even feel like i made it. i feel like i stole it from someone smarter, cooler, and less fatigued. + but somehow i made this song, and honestly, if i might brag a bit, + it rules + the melancholy and happy sublime, that feeling when those two vibes meet, riiiiiiight in the center between them? that is a tone i will probably spend my entire life chasing. \ No newline at end of file diff --git
