(Alternate Universe Intermission)

- So this pretty much happened when Radiation went "yo jit make something" and I was like "okay", and then later I was like "bluuuuuuh don't know what to write", and then Radiation went "do trollcops", and I went "no that's dumb, stupid dumb, what is trollcops even", and Radiation went "DO IT JIT YOU BUTT", and I was like "NO RADIATION I HATE EVERYTHING". And then, Mellotron samples happened, and here we are. Also, it should be pointed out that in [[Trollcops (Radio Play)|the version with vocals]], there's a name drop of [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|the fan music piece]] that this is based off of. Yes, it takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.

Besides that, I dunno, just enjoy it.

- Don't tell anyone, but this is actually a remix of one of Jit's old fansongs called [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|'Under the Hat,']] which was a battle theme for Dad. So if your heart still pines for him... his soul and pipe are contained deep within this track.

     So damn catchy and sleuthy.
+
+ Quasar Nebula: (wiki editor, 8/13/2025)
+
+ On the wiki we used to mark this track as referencing the version [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|from Land of Fans and Music]], probably just because *obviously* that is a fansong and both Trollcops and the later release [[track:under-the-hat|on One Year older]] are not. We've revisited the context and changed both tracks to point to a hypothetical [[track:under-the-hat-original|original version]] we think was publicly released at some point earlier back, but haven't actually found.
+
+ This track and the piano version on One Year Older are quite similar arrangements, so we're confident there's a reference between the two. We aren't so sure what direction the reference goes - we don't know which came first. One Year Older released over a year after AlterniaBound (ha), but the recording included there was first posted [on Tumblr](https://jitmakesstuff.tumblr.com/post/5889719815/and-now-more-piano-recordings-so-i-discovered) in May 2011, just two months following AlterniaBound. And that one might have been recorded some amount of time earlier than it was posted - possibly preceding when this track, Trollcops, was produced for AlterniaBound.

Well, this is the only one I actually tried on so I guess that's good it's the only one that got chosen. I now realize the pipe is out of proportion or those are really big pictures. I like it though.

+Commentary: |-
+ Quasar Nebula: (wiki editor, 8/13/2025)
+
+ Theoretial common root for the versions of this track released [[track:under-the-hat|on One Year Older]] and [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|on Land of Fans and Music]].
+
+ The booklet commentary on [[track:trollcops]] makes reference to a "fan music piece" called Under the Hat, and gives the impression that this track was publicly listenable, just unofficially/independently released or posted:
+
+ > Also, it should be pointed out that in [[Trollcops (Radio Play)|the version with vocals]], there's a name drop of [[track:under-the-hat-lofam|the fan music piece]] that this is based off of. Yes, it takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.
+
+ Meanwhile [the Tumblr commentary](https://jitmakesstuff.tumblr.com/post/5889719815/and-now-more-piano-recordings-so-i-discovered) for [[track:under-the-hat|the One Year Older version]], recorded either in May 2011 or some amount of time earlier, describes that arrangement this way:
+
+ > In other words, it’s played plain, then with an improvised solo (that has some sucky bits), then through again with a little reprise.
+
+ And *[[track:under-the-hat-lofam|the LOFAM commentary]]* describes the more energetic arrangement there, this way:
+
+ > So this started off as some music for Dad. And then I was like "this isn't strife-y enough!" cause it was supposed to be strife-y and then this happened. Since it's supposed to be battle music and all, the more laid-back chill version wouldn't really work.
+
+ So this track in particular - "original", which is an unofficial title we've given it - is a recording of the track before it had ever been arranged further, "laid-back" and "chill" and simply "played plain".
+
+ We haven't found this track, but figure it's substantially older than March 2011. (Booklet commentary: "It takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.")

Of course, not being able to play something magnificently and to the best form of the genre didn't really stop me from playing around with this piece. So I did.

I also think it would fit in during the first Intermission, with all the under-the-hat chicanery and stabbings that went on.
+
+ Erik Scheele: ([Tumblr](https://jitmakesstuff.tumblr.com/post/5889719815/and-now-more-piano-recordings-so-i-discovered), 5/27/2011)
+
+ And now, more piano recordings.
+
+ So I discovered that the Under the Hat (aka Trollcops) changes can get an incredible jive to them. But this one other time, that’s in the recording here, I played around with it.
+
+ In other words, it’s played plain, then with an improvised solo (that has some sucky bits), then through again with a little reprise.
+
+ Hope you enjoooooy
+
+ Quasar Nebula: (wiki editor, 8/13/2025)
+
+ This version from One Year Older was first released [on Tumblr](https://jitmakesstuff.tumblr.com/post/5889719815/and-now-more-piano-recordings-so-i-discovered) in May 2011. (The download is dead, but it's preserved [in the sound test](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1Hl0I-KsI). It's actually the same recording!)
+
+ Although the release of [[album:alterniabound]] and this Tumblr recording are only about two months apart, and the Tumblr commentary above is written some amount of time in retrospect, we still figure that [[track:trollcops]] precedes this piano improv/arrangement. Voila the reasoning:
+
+ - This track is contextualized with "Under the Hat (aka Trollcops) changes can get an incredible jive to them."
+ - This track's filename (as posted on Tumblr) is
trollcopsjammin.mp3
.
+ - The booklet commentary for Trollcops makes it pretty clear that the mellotron saved that track, probably during when it was being arranged.
+
+ We're confident they're referencing each other one way or the other; besides the structure, the improv/solo sections have particular common material. But since the timeframe is ambiguous and our reasoning above is a bit shenanigans, "which came first?" could still go either way.
+
+ As for the "chiptune version" which Scheele refers to in the booklet commentary for *this* release, August 2012, on One Year Older? Totally a mystery! We've seen no sign of that one anywhere, online.
+
+ And one more Tumblr post [from August 2011](https://www.tumblr.com/jitmakesstuff/8392340269/and-then-one-time-i-improvised-around-on-piano):
+
+ > And then one time I improvised around on piano with Trollcops. And thought it was good enough to like, post around and such.
+ > What a stupid idea that was
+ > \*laugh track\*
+ >
+ > (although in all honesty this is probably some of the better solo improvising I've done and managed to catch on recording)
+
+ It might have been a reupload of this same recording, though we can't tell because the SoundCloud upload, "under-the-hat-stuff", has gone missing. If it was a reupload (the original was just via Dropbox) then it maybe makes sense that it was removed in favor of the proper album release on Bandcamp, but that's speculation.
