+ I will be submitting to [[album:coloUrs-and-mayhem-universe-a|the Homestuck music contest]].
+
+ One thing I’ve seen while browsing submissions is that [[group:fandom|the Homestuck fanbase]] has revealed in itself some really talented people. Some of the material that’s shown up for this project is truly creative and wonderful. The contest album is, at its core, about finding fresh new musical vistas for Homestuck, and bringing out-of-the-box thinking and creativity to the comic’s soundtrack. What the fanbase has produced just over the last couple of weeks is truly inspiring to me, and frankly it’s a beautiful thing to see so many people exploring music for themselves, in some cases for the first time.
+
+ I couldn’t help but do some exploring for myself, just to be a part of something so magnificent. The audio track attached up there is my submission, the result of forcing myself to try something new and fresh.
+
+ To anyone else in the creative process or anyone contemplating trying out music for the first time, I want to encourage you. There is no better time to dip your toe into the musical waters, and no better opportunity to dive into the waves and see what you might find as an artist.
+
+ And let me remind you that, as always, the water’s fine!

Though [[Sburban Jungle]] was the first song to hook me on [[artist:michael-guy-bowman|Michael Guy Bowman's]] music, my heart lies with [[album:mobius-trip-and-hadron-kaleido]]. [[Dawn of Man]] is a favorite of mine from that album, and it also happens to be a partial remix of Sburban Jungle. In the Homestuck tradition, the natural thing to do then was mix them together, along with a cameo from [[Exodus]], featured in [[album:sburb-ost|SBURB]]. The instruments are based primarily on Dawn of Man, bringing in some of Sburban Jungle's mallet percussion and a few of my own additions. The result is Sburban Genesis, a song ultimately inspired by the mysterious origins of the game and its multi-universal legacy.

This really sounded like a night time kind of song to me, which I think went nicely with the baby frog Jade finds on her island as a kid. He's a pretty cute little guy, but his role carries a lot of weight, so I think he fits the song pretty well.

+
+ Back in the old days of a couple months ago, I entered a piece called Wanderer’s Vigil into [[album:coloUrs-and-mayhem-universe-a|the Homestuck Music Competition]]. It was pretty low-quality, but I think I’ve figured out some of the parts that didn’t work in it, such as the square waves and lack of equalization. Here’s an updated rendition. It’s still in progress, and feedback on what to work on next would be great, but it’s at least better than it was. Whoo, musical progress!

+
+ This is my final entry to [[album:coloUrs-and-mayhem-universe-a|the Homestuck Music Contest]], this time for Vriska. This song was written with her [confession scene](https://homestuck.com/005366) in mind, so it quotes from John’s leitmotif [[Doctor]] as well as [[track:MeGaLoVania]] and [[Spider’s Claw]] for Vriska. There’s also a bit of [[Sburban Jungle]], [[Homestuck Anthem]], and [[track:bl1nd-just1c3-1nv3st1g4t1on|BL1ND JUST1C3: 1NT3RROG4T1ON]], since I like to end my songs on a morbid note.
+
+ The piano/chiptune combo from [[Wanderer's Vigil|WV]] returns here, since I find it fairly useful for setting a melancholy mood. The electric guitar and bass were pretty much required, this being a Vriska theme after all. The alternation between the heavy guitar parts and the lighter piano sections was chosen to reflect the changing tone of Vriska’s conversation with John, the leitmotifs roughly matching the various subjects they talk about.
+
+ Too L8 took longer to put together than [[Batrachian Biogeny|BB]] and WV combined, mostly due to school and sickness, but I’m still not certain about parts of it. Feedback was greatly appreciated on the first two songs, and any comments on this one would be fantastic.

     Thomas Ferkol: (booklet commentary)

Wander was the result of there not being enough [[Explore]] remixes. Back around the time I joined the music team, I was listening to Explore and thought the orchestration of the synths would translate well to strings. I'd also probably been listening to old Apocalyptica at the time, resulting in a cello ensemble with plodding gritty drum loops. While Explore soars above the remains of the world, Wander is grounded and more subdued. The interlude of ambient jungle noises was partially to reflect the world reverting back to nature, and the distant atmosphere and distorted portions are sort of the echoes and ruins left behind.
