+
+ As much as outer states attempt to quarantine the undead "disease" of the miasma, its presence only seems to spread with the fanatical necromancers from Alacastor. Yet within the state, life continues as though little has changed. Under the Congregation of Mortis, Alacastor's structure has been retained, and its living citizen's lives left largely untouched, their ordinary days only intruded upon by the return of the dead and an inability to die themselves. Only at the hand of Mortis can they do so, for it was Mortis' gift to humanity that they need no longer know the finality of death. Mortis, the God of Death, the Living Truth spreads its blessings to the world but only to those who are first blessed by its holy magic...
+
+ Annette, a living but "blessed" mage from outside Alacastor, seeks understanding as forces throughout the state manipulate and toy with her in some grand purpose. Her only allies are her silent protector Corvus and the disgraced necromancer Erik as the whole of Alacastor seems to twist and conspire in seeking her favor for reasons unknown, especially to her. Meanwhile the earth below their feet continues to weaken and scar as Mortis' increasingly radiant light casts darker and darker shadows upon it.

+ “Our “undeath” allows any part of our bodies once severed or damaged to continue living independently. It’s not as though we have much control over them once they're cut from the nervous system, however. A severed hand is still a severed hand, even if it pulsates futilely with life… Regrettable as it is that my body had to be left behind, I’m an optimist. Just take me back to Margaret, and things should be okay.”

+ Halfway to Margaret, the trio are forced to stop. The Right Hand of God, the Prophet Faust, bids them to stay a moment as a host of drones march behind her, effectively blocking the way. Faust reveals she had been waiting for Erik to return north to "excommunicate" him but notes that someone seems to have beat her to it. When he asks why she doesn't finish him off, she ignores the question and turns her attention to Annette. In a curious but reverent tone, Faust ponders aloud what the phrase "Blessed Daughter" means and why this person isn't beside her father, Mortis. Annette merely says she doesn't have any answers for her. The two women have a stand off before Faust decides to leave without another word, allowing the trio to pass.

+ Corvus shifted Erik's head in his hands. Once sure that the prophet had left, the severed head murmured, "I've never heard of the 'Blessed Daughter,' but a hunch tells me it's you. It sounds like something they- I mean the prophets- kept under wraps until now."
+ Annette stepped forward, beckoning Corvus to follow. "If it keeps people from trying to kill us, I'll own up to it for now." She paused but kept walking, tapping her thumbs together lightly in thought. "Father... you don't think he's actually my father, do you? Everything I've heard doesn't sound like the one I remember... but my memories of my parents keep getting hazier, like a dream upon waking." Her voice thinned as she moved from addressing Erik to thinking out loud.

+ Through her alchemy, Margaret fashions a golem body for Erik, similar to Corvus. His abilities as a mage are limited now to the conduction of energy through the artificial form, but his body is more resistant to most forms of magic. As he adjusts, Annette tries to ask Margaret about the "Blessed Daughter," only to be interrupted by an unexpected guest.

+ "From a distance he appeared to be austerely dressed and humble in expression, but as he neared them, the air in the room distorted as though he carried the weight of the world. Behind his head, a halo of light circled ever brighter, designs twisting and slithering within its perimeter. When he stood before them, it felt as though he became the sun, with all its promises of life-giving light and deadly heat."
+
+ The terms of Margaret's escape after sending Erik south involved creating a partnership with Mortis. In return for clemency, she would take the title of prophet and continue her research of the under close supervision. Thus Mortis himself awaited Annette's return to Margaret. He reveals that Annette is indeed the Blessed Daughter. When she objects, he states plainly that even if he isn't her father, she is still his daughter. As such, he suggests she return to the Spire in central Alacastor with him. Erik objects before she has a chance. With a flick of his wrist, Mortis causes him to fall backward, comatose. Annette catches him, and a second later he awakes startled, gasping as though he'd been drowning. Margaret states that she wishes for Annette to go on a trip to the Capillarian Forest to the east before returning with Mortis. Calmly, Mortis allows the excursion and leaves them without another word.

You must be the one to discover your place in all this, because from here on out, it will be your decisions that shape our future. I know I've been steering you all over the land, and you haven't gotten all the answers you've wanted. I am sorry." + Early on their path, the trio encounters the Left Hand of God, the Prophet Percival who once had died in his pilgrimage to the fabled Mortiseum, the House of Mortis. As a Hand of the returned god, he has lost much of his sensibility. Far from the world he once knew and any purpose he once had, he's devoted his existence to fanatically serving his god. He spends the journey alternately threatening Erik and Annette with death, calling the former a heretic and the latter an impostor. Fortunately for them, he departs toward the northeast state of Nifel.

+ An expansive forest connects eastern Alacastor, southern Nifel, and northern Ancilastor. Once the holy grounds of an old god of earth, few travel through the forest for holy reasons in this day. Ancient, petrified trees stand like walls around the outer forest, deterring most travelers from the wonders within. Beyond the wooden and stone skeletons, the trees grow wilder, taller, and more curiously than anywhere else. Bioluminescent boughs pulsate with dim lights at the forest's heart.

Rumors reach the forest that Mortis the Living Truth has returned… Pah. What wears that name now is a pretender and a thief. No, Mortis is not the one who persists. Not this one. He gives me faith that my goddess still lingers beneath our feet. I feel more assured of it every passing day. Your pulse is the pulse of the forest.”

+
+ As they exit the forest, Faust intercepts them and demands Annette return with her. She calls out Annette, asking her to prove herself, but Erik and Corvus step forward. When Annette objects, he reasons that Faust has caused him the most trouble and wants to take the first shot. The fight begins as a duel between the two with the occasional involvement of Corvus. When Faust takes a strong blow to the face from Erik, however, she unleashes massive torrents of fire, pushing the fight in her favor. Erik and Corvus hold out for a time, but fight a losing battle. Annette finds an opening in Faust's onslaught and attempts to do to Faust what Mortis had done to Erik before. She succeeds, temporarily cutting Faust's connection to the life-force given to her from Mortis. Erik pins the stunned Faust to a tree, running her through with a rapier. But Faust still lives, watching Annette with hollow eyes.

+
+ The picture finally seems to come together. Mortis isn't Mortis, the life he gives isn't his, and the world suffers for it. Somehow, Mortis has stolen the remnant energy of an old god of earth and has found a way to thread it through himself and into others. Thus he's created a web of "undeath" hinging upon himself as the conduit. As far as they know, if he goes, everyone else goes with him. That is, until Annette severed Faust's thread and bound it back to herself. When Mortis cut Erik's thread as well, it was once Annette caught him that he came back to life, binding his thread to herself as well. She realizes that, for whatever reason, she is higher in the web than Mortis himself is.
+ Faust confirms that she knew all but the last detail until now. Mortis used her but underestimated how perceptive she was, believing that using the most ancient but notable clergy as his Hands would make them easier to manipulate. As Annette and the others traveled to Margaret and the forest, Faust became increasingly plagued with doubts. Her orders were to strike and take her back, not to test her abilities.
+ Erik ponders whether there can be a way to sever all the threads strung through Mortis without causing mass genocide. Only Mortis knows how to create threads; necromancers were deceived into learning only how to spread them. Annette has proven she can transfer a thread, but can she handle that many? And if she does, will it actually change anything?
+ After hearing their input, Annette resolves to dethrone Mortis and stop the scarring of the earth from his mad design. She believes there must be a way to cut Mortis out of the web. They'll have to get close to him, but maybe with him out of the picture, the balance would return. Drones could finally rest in peace, and the miasma would cease to spread. Erik and Corvus affirm their loyalty to her, and Faust decides to follow her as well. Thus the choices finally rested on her:
+
+ Where do they go now?

+
+ The first album of a series, THE EARTHEN SCAR follows a young mage, Annette, and her bird-like guardian, Corvus, as they traverse a nation at war with itself. Spawned from the inner state (Alacastor) capital known as The Spire, state mages have developed a "plague" of undeath through magic, spreading it radially from the center of the continent in an effort to bring renewal and eternal life. The Outer States do what they can to keep the "Miasma," or so the plague has been dubbed, from encroaching further, conjoining their military into one large force to isolate it within the state of Alacastor. Weeks prior to word of the plague reaching the Outer States, Annette awakens one day to find her parents, state-independent mages, gone without a word, leaving her with just a business ledger and their mute assistant, Corvus, an artificial human. Using the small black book, the pair seek to discover her parents' whereabouts, why they left, and who created the plague which seems to scar even the earth itself.

Turning counterclockwise in place, she found a path branching from the small plaza. A crooked watchtower, scorched into a new existence as an ashen monolith, stood like a grave at the edge of the town. Hopefully, this was the right place."
+

Annette froze, but Corvus took a step forward, extend his right leg, and, with his foot, pushed one head-over-back into the dust, crushing its worn chest. He impaled a second with his taloned, right hand as it leapt over the grounded mongrel. Even with a foot through its upper body, it clawed at his legs, and the other gnashed its crooked teeth, trying its best to pull itself closer to him. With a flick of her wrist, not quite out of her daze, Annette set their heads alight, and Corvus retracted his arm, stepped out of the fallen body, and hurried back to her. More approached, too many to deal with at once. Even the once blazing wall waned dangerously, partially due to her split attention. Stalling them here seemed to be a fruitless effort."
+
+ Finding a watchtower mentioned in the ledger, the two attempt to travel down the path beside it, only to be ambushed by remaining Miasmics not flushed out or incinerated by previous forces. Testing her abilities in a combat situation, Annette breathes in "inspiration," magical energy, from the ruined town, but overuses her conjured fires, burning into her own bodily energy in the midst of the defense. Corvus is forced to drag her from the wretched horde and flee down the path to an old trade route tunnel through the mountains.

A curious being, an artificial construct, but neither a golem, being made of true flesh and bone, nor homunculus, being larger than a sparrow. For as long as she could remember, he existed with her family, but for what reasons, she did not know. Barely within the boat, the bird-man leaned over the edge, rags flapping in the wind, as though he were some skeletal vulture preparing for flight. No, he thought, he was what was left of the bird, a pile of calcified memories reminiscing, the flight all in its head."

He strode toward the pair in a graceful motion, like that of a crane wading in the shallow waters of the soaked earth. Threatening to hold them in place, the damp ground lightly tugged on their boots. With his neck at a crooked angle, he seemed to gaze through the tight fold that should've rendered him blind and straight at Annette. "Yes, yes you are. Then perhaps you came, young mage, to learn our way." He stopped and held out a pale hand, and with it, she swore she felt the earth slither under her feet, almost as if recoiling from the motion. Corvus brought his left leg back, assuming a defensive position. "Or perhaps," he rolled his head to face a dismembered Miasmic crawling legless toward him, "You came to learn your place."

+ THE LIMINAL DESCENT is the next installment of THE EARTHEN SCAR series. Months, perhaps years previous, two necromancers are forced into exile for researching too deeply (and loudly) into the source of the Miasma. To make matters worse, they are pursued by the high inquisitors of their order, the Congregation of Mortis, under the supposed reincarnated death god at the head of the Miasma. Meanwhile, Annette and Corvus begin their first trek through the plague state Alacastor, seeking the location associated with the Gottestrane mentioned in her parents ledger, a plant that supposedly can never die.

+ Crossroad: Forced into an exodus, otherwise facing complete decimation at the hand of a god, necromancers Erik and Margaret lead their host of Miasmics from the smoldering remains of their camp. Erik, under the guidance of Margaret, began researching the Miasma more thoroughly than the state, and its head, desired. Unlike Margaret, who had already delved deeper into the truth, Erik made his findings and intentions less subtle when brought in front of committees, compromising their standing with the Congregation of Mortis, the order behind it all. Margaret agrees to provide Erik with much of her work and to continue researching, though out of the reach of the Congregation.

+ Knowing they would be hunted until extermination or evacuation from Alacastor, and probably even after, Margaret and Erik travel south. They agree to part their forces once they reach the other side of a canyon, known as The Whispering Veil, to avoid being easily tracked through the Miasma. Centuries previous, Percival, a prophet of Mortis, sought to make a pilgrimage to the north to find the Mortiseum, the house of Mortis, which was allegedly at the top of the world. The story goes that Mortis tested Percival's faith by letting him hear the whispers of the dead from the dark canyon walls and observing if he was resilient against their goading and questioning. When he proved himself strong willed enough to carry on, Mortis spoke from behind a veil of dark clouds in the sky, stating that Percival may continue his quest. Though Margaret tries to pass time by telling the story, Erik is uninterested. Instead, its connection to Mortis returns his thoughts to their present situation: running away from what most people in Alacastor have come to believe is Mortis himself.

+
+ Almost clear of the canyon, the Miasmic host is ambushed by a prophet known as Faust, one of the Congregation's high inquisitors. Most of the Miasmics clear the canyon as Margaret, Erik, and a group of revenants (Miasmics still bearing self-awareness) hold the prophet's attention. As Faust is distracted, Margaret asks Erik to continue south, beyond Alacastor's border, and then move east, toward the Capillarian Forest. He complies and takes half the host. Margaret duels with Faust just long enough for Erik to disappear, then calls for a truce, stating she knows something valuable to Mortis. Faust stands down, and agrees to let Margaret meet with Mortis at a different location to further discuss the matter. She heads west, toward the lake Nostros, with Faust, who relays the news to Mortis.

+ Time and location skip forward to Annette and Corvus, now traveling west along the tributary they had used to escape the Watcher's drones toward what they hope is the location of the Gottestrane, the plant mentioned in her parents' ledger. The further into Alacastor they travel, however, the more human-like and less hostile the Miasmics seem to become, at times ignoring them completely. The landscape also changes, gradually appearing more natural and less scarred, though not by a large degree. Annette decides to try and blend in, risking verbal contact with some revenants to get better directions. After some short encounters with surprisingly helpful villagers, all of their answers point toward a figure referred to as "The Crone," who resides in Galvansburg and tends to the Deathless Gardens, housing plants similar in description to the Gottestrane.

+ In Galvansburg, the pair seek out "The Crone." Along the way, they encounter many oddities, including alchemical creations bearing a strong resemblance to Corvus. Eventually, they find the garden and "The Crone," a necromancer named Margaret. She greets Corvus first, but her focus shifts to Annette after noticing her "aliveness," expressing surprise at seeing a living mage this far into Alacastor. She introduces herself as a renowned alchemist and researcher under the direction of the Congregation of Mortis. Annette, being raised in a setting removed from society, inquires about the order. Margaret tells her about the Congregation and its ruling: an order of mages who gave their lives to use the Miasma to grant the people of Alacastor eternal life. At its head is a living god named Mortis who supposedly brought this gift to humanity at his second coming. When Margaret asks what brought the pair to Galvansburg, Annette tells her of her parents' disappearance and the contents of the ledger. Intrigued by what she's hearing, Margaret pries into Annette's past and tells the pair that she might know something interesting of Annette's parents and perhaps Annette herself… but will only divulge the information if she is willing fetch a companion of hers from their location to the south.

+ Margaret allows Annette and Corvus to depart with caravan set to stop near the southern border of Alacastor. She tells them that her companion is a man named Erik who should hopefully be near the Capillarian Forest by now. She teaches Annette a way to track him through the Miasma once they are close enough. Though she expresses some concerns about traveling in the open on the roads, Margaret reassures them that they will be safe from suspicion surrounded by revenants, and that even then, she is probably the safest person in Alacastor.

+ Leaving the caravan behind, the pair reaches the southern border of Alacastor, only to find their current location a battleground. Though safely beyond the quarantine line, they learn of a necromancer hiding out in a fort that was renamed Specter's Hand before the southern military forces pushed the Miasmics back. Recognized as a mage by Colonel Ameste, Annette and Corvus are dragged into the conflict with mixed feelings. Ameste is wary of the pair and curious about their background, but requires their aid in breaching the fort and apprehending the necromancer. The military assaults the Miasmic hold. In the midst of the battle, Annette and Ameste come face to face with the necromancer hiding inside.

+ Trapped in the fort when the southern military pushed the quarantine further into Alacastor, Erik had failed to reach the Capillarian Forest. Now, he attempts to escape the two mages, a seemingly hopeless endeavor. That is, until he notices something strange about the younger, with traces of the Miasma in her movement. During the confrontation, he tries to find out more, asking her questions and hinting at something that doesn't seem to click for her. In the end, however, he is arrested by the colonel, his arms severed to prevent magic usage, and made a prisoner of the military to be temporarily held in the fort.

+
+ During the fight, Ameste realized what Erik was implying while Annette is still clueless. She confronts Annette, accusing her of being a Miasmic. Shocked by the accusation, she can neither confirm or deny it, not knowing herself. Ameste offers her an ultimatum: because she's different from the others, to work with the military in quarantining and eventually eradicating its existence, or face the same fate as Erik. Still trying to process the idea as connections are made and the revelation takes its hold, Annette asks for some time to figure things out. Realizing she genuinely didn't know, Ameste allows it, but demands an answer by morning. Now knowing the name of the prisoner, Annette uses the tracking method Margaret taught her. Sure enough, he's the Erik she was looking for. In order to hold her end of the bargain with Margaret and in light of her recent discovery, she decides she and Corvus must free Erik and escape the military.

+ Annette and Corvus break Erik out of prison just before dawn. He and Annette discuss her realization before charging through the fort. Corvus takes a crossbow bolt to the arm. Though stricken with anxiety and the target of the military forces awakening, Annette and the guys manage to get over the wall and move down the road. Just as they think they're clear, however, Ameste ambushes them, incinerating Erik and bearing down on Annette and an injured Corvus with fire. In the end, Annette resolves to accept her being a Miasmic and tries to replicate the method used by the Watcher by combining Miasma affected blood with the earth. She impales Ameste with a tendril of earth.

+
+ Annette tends to Erik, who has been heavily damaged. His lower body no longer functioning and upper body in barely better shape, he begins to tell Annette more about the Miasma and its properties while trying to think of a way to continue the journey back to Margaret. He tells her being a Miasmic isn't a matter of life and undeath, but rather that the Miasma is a type of alchemic magic that changes everything living or once possessing life it comes in contact with. By changing the make up of things with the Miasma, they take on an entirely different form of life, an almost parasitic life based on "the source" at the heart of Alacastor. The altered body resonates with some distant "frequency" of life that's always been there, as he describes it. In her case, she is both living and a Miasmic, and so long as she keeps her body preserved and capable of sustaining life without the Miasma, she can stay that way. In the middle of asking for more information, however, Erik cuts her off, saying it isn't the best time and place for him to divulge everything. Instead, he requests that she sever his head.
